Hopkins from Belize City: Flights, Rental Cars, the Road South and Cockscomb

Before the sun is well up, the sound of a Garifuna drum can already be drifting along the sandy lanes of Hopkins, and the smell of coconut bread comes out of a kitchen or two. Getting there means leaving Belize City behind and heading south toward the Caribbean shore, with the Maya Mountains blue on the horizon. This is how that trip works, which options exist, and what is worth adding to it once you arrive on the Stann Creek coast.

How do you get to Hopkins from Belize City?

Hopkins lies about 50 miles in a straight line from Belize City, and the connection that names it most directly is a Maya Island Air flight from the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport to Dangriga, which that airline lists as Dangriga (Hopkins).

From there you are on the Stann Creek coast, in the district whose capital is Dangriga. The other way south is by road, with a rental car picked up at the airport itself.

What decides between the two is mostly how you like to travel. A flight turns the journey into a window view of coast, reef and forest, and it drops you in a Garifuna town where the village of Hopkins is the neighbor you came for. A car keeps the schedule in your own hands and lets you stop where the landscape asks you to, in a part of the country where the Maya Mountains and the Cockscomb Range stand inland and the sea runs along the other side.

Either way, the starting point is the same. The international airport sits in Ladyville, 10 miles outside Belize City, and it is the only international airport in the country. If your trip begins with a flight into Belize from the United States, you can begin the Hopkins leg from that same airport without going into the city first.

One practical note for anyone driving to or from the airport. Roadwork and dredging are underway on the airport access road, which means slower traffic and uneven surfaces. Drivers are asked to reduce speed, follow the flaggers and watch for dredging equipment and workers near the roadway. Build a little slack into that stretch of the day.

Ways to get to Hopkins from Belize City

By air to Dangriga

Maya Island Air offers connecting flights from the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport to a list of Belizean towns, and Dangriga (Hopkins) is one of them, alongside Placencia, Punta Gorda, San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Corozal. On the other end, Dangriga Airport, known as the Pelican Beach Airstrip, is served by both Maya Island Air and Tropic Air several times daily, with flights to Belize City, Placencia and Punta Gorda.

This is the option for travelers who would rather spend the morning on the beach than behind a windshield. You arrive in a small Garifuna town at the mouth of the North Stann Creek River, a place with its own drumming, cooking and language, and then continue to Hopkins from there.

By rental car from the airport

Two rental desks are named at the Philip Goldson International Airport. Hertz, operating as Safari Belize, can be reached at +(501) 225 – 3300, and Crystal Auto Rental at +(501) 223 – 1600. Calling ahead is the simplest way to learn what each can offer, and picking the car up where you land saves you the trip into town.

Driving suits people who want to build the trip as they go. The Hummingbird Highway is the main route into Dangriga from Belmopan and is known for its scenery, cutting through the Belizean mountains, and the Southern Highway is the road that leads on toward Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. A car also means you can reach the sanctuary on your own timetable, which a flight alone does not give you.

If you return the car at the airport, parking there is charged per day, and the amounts are in the last section. The airport access road, with its work zone, is the first and last stretch of the drive, so it deserves your attention in both directions.

Where Hopkins sits once you arrive

Hopkins is a small village with a population of 1,610 at the 2010 census, and most of its people are Garifuna. It lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Maya Mountains and the Cockscomb Range inland, and it is very close to the Sittee River. That mix of sea, river and forest is why a trip here rewards a slow arrival, not a rushed one.

Whichever way you travel, think of the journey as the first chapter of the stay. The coast road, the first glimpse of the palms and the sound of someone practicing on a drum from a porch are all part of Hopkins, and none of it needs a schedule.

Options compared

Option Starts from What to know
Maya Island Air flight Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport Connecting flights to Dangriga (Hopkins), one of several Belizean towns on the airline’s list
Tropic Air flight Dangriga Airport (Pelican Beach Airstrip) Serves Dangriga several times daily, with flights to Belize City, Placencia and Punta Gorda
Hertz / Safari Belize rental car Philip Goldson International Airport Phone +(501) 225 – 3300
Crystal Auto Rental car Philip Goldson International Airport Phone +(501) 223 – 1600

Put side by side, the choices come down to a trade between handing the route to a pilot and keeping it yourself. Flying places you in Dangriga, where the airstrip is served by two airlines several times a day, and the last stretch to Hopkins is still ahead of you. Driving keeps you in control from the moment you leave the airport, but it also keeps you responsible for the airport access road and its work zone.

Neither choice cancels the other. Some travelers fly south and rely on the village itself once they arrive, because Hopkins is small and its beach, restaurants and drumming nights are close to one another. Others pick up a car because Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is off the Southern Highway and a car lets them add it to the same trip. Think about what you want the days to look like, and the transport follows.

The airport itself asks passengers departing from it to arrive at least 3 hours before their scheduled flight. That matters at the other end of the trip, when you head home after the Stann Creek coast has taken a few days of your schedule.

Making a day of it

Dangriga, the Garifuna capital of the district

Dangriga, once known as Stann Creek Town, sits on the Caribbean coast at the mouth of the North Stann Creek River and is the capital of the Stann Creek District. It is a Garifuna town, and that heritage shows in its music. In 2001 UNESCO proclaimed the language, dance and music of the Garifuna a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and in Belize today there has been a resurgence of Garifuna music, popularized by artists such as Andy Palacio, Mohobub Flores and Aurelio Martinez.

If you fly south, you land here, so it is the natural place to begin. Walk the waterfront, listen for drums, and ask where the Garifuna language is being spoken, because it is a living language, not a museum piece. For those driving, the Hummingbird Highway is the scenic road that brings travelers into town from Belmopan.

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve in the Stann Creek District, off the Southern Highway, approximately 20 miles south of Dangriga Town. It was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1984 and is recognized internationally as the world’s first jaguar preserve. The Belize Forest Department and the Belize Audubon Society operate it.

The name draws many people, but the forest is the point. You are in the Maya Mountains and the Cockscomb Range, and while the jaguars are the reason for the reserve, wildlife is a chance and never a promise.

Go for the forest itself, and treat any animal you spot as a bonus. A rental car is the way to include it in a day that begins at the airport, since the sanctuary sits off the highway and not in town.

Back in Hopkins

Hopkins is the place to end the day. Its shore faces the Caribbean Sea, the Sittee River is very close, and the mountains stand behind. The village is small and mostly Garifuna, and an evening here often means drumming, fresh fish and a table near the water. Leave room in the plan for that, rather than filling every hour with sights.

If you have the choice, shape the day so that the last stop is the village. A morning in Dangriga or at Cockscomb, then the road or the flight to the coast, and an evening that belongs to Hopkins. That order lets the trip build toward the place you came for.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs through the end of November, so the weather for a southern coast trip is worth a glance in the days before you leave, and Belize uses the Belize dollar alongside U.S. money in many places. The airport charges for parking by the day, which matters if you leave a car there, and Cockscomb charges non-nationals an entrance fee.

Fee Amount Who pays
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary entrance BZD 10 Non-nationals
Airport parking, per day US$2.00 Anyone parking a car at the airport
Airport parking, overnight US$9.00 Anyone parking a car overnight at the airport
