At first light in Hopkins, the sea wind moves through the coconut palms and a drum starts up somewhere behind the houses, slow and low, while a woman carries a pan of fresh cassava bread along the sandy road. Fishermen are already pulling their boats up the shore. Three days in this Garifuna village put the sea, the village and the rainforest of the Stann Creek District within reach, with room left over to sit and listen.

Is three days enough in Hopkins?
Three days is enough for a first visit, especially for travelers who like to mix village time with one or two outings. Hopkins is small. At the 2010 census it counted 1,610 residents, and most of the people who live here are Garifuna. Give the first day to the village, and use the other two days to explore the surrounding coast and rainforest.
The plan below gives the first day to Hopkins itself: the shore, the food and the drumming. The second goes inland to the forest, either to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s first jaguar preserve, or to Mayflower Bocawina National Park with its zipline and waterfalls. The third heads out to the cayes by boat from Dangriga, the Garifuna cultural center of the district.
What three days leave out is the long list. A second park, a night on a caye, a slow afternoon in Dangriga for its music, or a trip down to Placencia all want more time. If you have three days, choose one forest and one stretch of sea, and let the village fill the gaps between them.
Day 1 in Hopkins
Start with the village at its slowest hour. Walk the road along the shore with the Caribbean on one side and the dark line of the Maya Mountains and the Cockscomb Range on the other, past wooden houses on stilts, painted gates and a few small guesthouses.
Hopkins was created after a hurricane destroyed the village of Newtown further up the coast, and you can feel that settled, rebuilt quality in the way everyone seems to know each other. Breakfast is best taken at a small local kitchen, where fry jacks, eggs and fresh juice come out of a family kitchen.
Spend the afternoon on the beach and in the village, without a fixed plan. Garifuna culture is the main thing here, and it shows in small things: the language you hear on the road, the drums, the cassava bread baked in the open air.
The language, dance and music of the Garifuna were proclaimed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and visitors can ask locally about performances or lessons. Ask locally what is happening that day rather than expecting a set schedule.
Dinner is the point of the evening. Look for a simple seaside place that serves fish or conch, rice and beans, and above all hudut, the Garifuna dish of fish in a coconut broth served with mashed plantain.
Walk back under a sky with little light pollution, and keep the evening unhurried, since the next two days involve earlier starts. If you have time for only one tip, it is this one: eat the local dishes on your first night, because they set the tone for the rest of the stay.
Day 2 in Hopkins
Day 2 goes inland, and you have two good choices. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary lies off the Southern Highway, about 20 miles south of Dangriga Town, and it was established as the first protected area for the jaguar.
The sanctuary is operated by the Belize Forest Department and the Belize Audubon Society. A jaguar sighting is a rare chance, never a promise, but the forest itself is the draw: tall trees, river valleys and birdsong, with the Maya Mountains rising behind.
The other choice is Mayflower Bocawina National Park, on mile six of the Southern Highway. This is the more active option. Visitors can go ziplining, rappel down waterfalls and hike to Antelope Falls. The park is managed by the Friends of Mayflower Bocawina National Park.
If your group likes adrenaline and a good trail, take Bocawina. If you would rather listen to the forest and look for birds and animal tracks, take Cockscomb. Do not try to fit both into one day.
Back in Hopkins in the evening, the best thing to do is nothing in particular. Order a cold drink at a beachfront bar, rinse off the trail dust, and let the sound of the sea settle your legs.
For dinner, try a different kind of place from the night before: a grill serving fresh-caught fish, or a small restaurant that makes stew chicken with coconut rice. A forest day is tiring in a pleasant way, and the village rewards an early night.
Day 3 in Hopkins
Day 3 belongs to the sea. From Dangriga, travelers can take a short boat ride to South Water Caye, Tobacco Caye and Glover’s Reef Atoll.
Tobacco Caye is a tiny island of about three acres with five small lodges, while South Water Caye sits inside a marine reserve that is part of the Belize Barrier Reef System World Heritage Site. Choose one caye and give the day to it. Choose one caye, and confirm departure arrangements in Dangriga before setting out.
Coming back to Hopkins at the end of the day is the best part of the plan. The light is low and gold over the water, the boats are in, and the village seems to exhale.
Walk the shore once more, rinse the salt off, and sit down to an unhurried dinner. After two active days, this is the evening to order the dish you liked best on the first night, or to try a plate of fresh seafood you have not yet tasted.
If you still have energy after dinner, listen for drums. Hopkins is a village where music often drifts out of yards and porches after dark, and Garifuna songs are sung in a language that has been passed down through generations.
Sit near the sound and stay a while. For anyone traveling in mid-November, Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 is a public holiday and a moment of real celebration across the district, with the biggest festivities in Dangriga.
Where to stay for three days in Hopkins
For this plan, the best base is in the village of Hopkins itself, close to the shore road. From there the first day needs no transport at all: you step out, walk to breakfast, to the beach and to dinner. Hopkins remains the base, but the boats for the Day 3 outing leave from Dangriga.
A guesthouse or small hotel along the beach gives you the sound of the sea at night and the sunrise over the water in the morning. Staying among the houses of the village puts you closer to the cooking, the music and the conversation. Both choices suit a trip built around the Garifuna community and the surrounding nature.
Travelers who want something different could consider the cayes. Tobacco Caye and South Water Caye both have places to stay, and sleeping out on the reef changes the rhythm of a trip entirely. That, however, trades the village for the island, and with only three days it is hard to do both.
Others who want more services and a larger selection of beach hotels may prefer Placencia, which is known for its resorts, guesthouses and white sandy beaches. For this plan, though, Hopkins is the base that keeps everything else close.
What to skip if you only have three days in Hopkins
Skip the second beach town. Placencia has its own resorts and its own beaches, and it deserves a day or two rather than an afternoon squeezed between other things. Moving between two bases costs you time on the road and leaves less of the Garifuna village that is the reason to come here. Save it for a longer trip and use the time to stay put.
Skip doing both forest parks. Choosing one lets you enjoy it without watching the clock, and the other becomes a reason to return. In the same way, do not try to visit more than one caye on Day 3. The reef, the water and the time on the island are the reason to go, and a rushed second stop spoils the first.
Skip a heavy schedule of far excursions out of Belize altogether. The country has well-known sites in the west and a famous reef atoll to the north, but each one needs its own trip and its own base.
Three days in the south is better spent on the shore, the forest and the cayes. If you finish with spare time, use it for an extra slow morning in the village, a longer lunch, or a second evening of listening to drums.
Getting around Hopkins in three days
Hopkins is a small village on the Caribbean shore. The village is a short grid of sandy roads running along the shore, and breakfast, the beach and dinner all lie within the same few streets. That is part of the pleasure of the first day.
For the outings, the road does the work. The district is served by the Hummingbird Highway and the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway, which connect to Belize City by way of the George Price Highway at Belmopan.
The Hummingbird Highway is the main route to Dangriga from Belmopan, it is completely paved along its 49 miles, and it is known for its scenery as it cuts through the mountains. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Mayflower Bocawina National Park both lie off the Southern Highway. The boats to the cayes leave from Dangriga.
Dangriga also has an airport. Maya Island Air and Tropic Air serve it several times daily, with flights to Belize City, Placencia and Punta Gorda. The international airport is the Philip Goldson International Airport in Ladyville, which is the only international airport in Belize. Between the airport and Hopkins, the trip is by air, by sea or by road, depending on where you start.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.
The Belize dollar is the local currency, and the entrance fees for the parks are quoted in it. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so a trip between those dates falls within it. The sea near Hopkins stays warm all year, in the low 80s in January and the mid-80s in July.
