May is the month Lisbon stops behaving like a shoulder season. The official normal high is 73.0°F, the sun sets at 8:43 p.m. on the 15th, and the terrace that worked at lunch still works at nine. Hills that punish you in July are simply pleasant, and the ticket desks close while there are hours of daylight left to spend on the river.
What the month withholds is the water and one date. The Atlantic off the city sits at 63.1°F, cold enough to keep swims short, and on 1 May both Jerónimos and the Gulbenkian shut their doors. Rain has not finished either: 2.00 inches falls across 5.7 measurable days in an average May.

Every figure here comes from one instrument, so let it be named: the normals below are IPMA’s, 1991-2020, read at station 579, Lisboa Gago Coutinho, a real thermometer 103.9 m above sea level rather than a reanalysis grid cell smeared across the estuary. It gives a normal high of 73.0°F (22.8°C), a normal low of 57.4°F (14.1°C) and 2.00 inches (51 mm) of precipitation for the month.
Rain arrives in May as scattered days rather than a spell. An average May records 5.7 days with at least 1 mm (0.04 inch) and 1.9 days with 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch threshold American tables use, so the two counts do not swap. In practice: roughly one morning in five with something falling, and fewer than two days heavy enough to cancel a viewpoint. The polished limestone underfoot is slick long after the sky clears.
The day-night spread is 15.6°F. An afternoon of short sleeves cools fast once the sun leaves the tiles, and the night bottoms out near 57.4°F before dawn, which is why a linen-only suitcase gets cursed at 10 p.m. on a miradouro. One real layer plus something windproof above the river covers it. Shoes for the cobbles matter more, and the packing guide handles those.
On May 15 the city gets 14 hours 21 minutes of daylight, sunrise at 6:22 a.m. and sunset at 8:43 p.m. local (05:22 and 19:43 UTC). That reshuffles a day. Jerónimos takes its last entry at 17:00, three and a half hours before the sun goes down, so the monuments empty while the light is still doing its best work. Keep the viewpoints, the river and dinner for the hours the ticket desks refuse.
Can you swim in Lisbon in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off Lisbon averages 63.1°F (17.3°C) in May, from the Open-Meteo Marine dataset, taken as the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024. That qualifier does real work: it averages the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. Read 63.1°F as the optimistic end of what your ankles will find, not the number at 8 a.m.
Sixty-three degrees is Atlantic cold-water swimming rather than Mediterranean lounging. Fit swimmers get ten or fifteen minutes before their hands go stupid; everyone else wades, yelps and takes the photograph. Surfers at Ericeira are in full suits this month, and the calmer town beaches out toward Cascais are the usual compromise for a first dip. June adds 3.7°F and still does not make the water warm.
On wind and swell there is nothing primary and monthly in front of us, so no May wind average and no wave height are claimed here. The official pages do say one useful thing about exposure: Belém Tower can close whenever visitor safety is compromised by weather, out on its own spit of river. On a gusty morning that costs you a €15 ticket slot rather than the day.
How busy is Lisbon in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
May sits on the climb toward the summer peak, and a guess will not be dressed up as data: no primary occupancy or nightly-rate series for Lisbon by month is in front of us. What is published and fixed is the fare card. The 2026 Metropolitano and Carris tariffs took effect on 1 January and do not move with the season, so a single Carris/Metro ticket loaded on a navegante card costs €1.90 in May exactly as in August, plus €0.50 once for the card itself.
Booking pressure is easier to document than crowd counts. Jerónimos states outright that its tickets frequently sell out and cannot then be bought on the day of the visit, so the cloister belongs in the basket the week the flights are confirmed. Transport needs no reservation, but a zapping balance does need loading: it comes in fixed steps of €3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 or 40, and a metro ride paid from it costs €1.72 against €1.92 for tapping a bank card at the gate.
Lisbon adds a municipal tourist tax per night on top of the room rate, and no number for it will be served here in good faith. The city’s information portal refuses automated reading with a 403, and the Diário da República requires JavaScript, so the amount stayed unread on 8 September 2026. Ask the property to state the per-night figure in writing before you pay a deposit, and expect a separate line at check-out.
One upgrade genuinely changes this month: the 24-hour ticket with the CP suburban trains at €11.40, against €7.25 for the Carris/Metro version and €10.35 for the one that adds the Cacilhas ferry. With sunset at 8:43 p.m., a Sintra or Cascais day stops being a race for the last useful train. The same card also spares you the on-board fares of €2.30 on a bus, €3.30 on a tram (28 included), €4.30 on a funicular for up to two rides and €6.20 on the Santa Justa lift for up to two rides.
Things to do in Lisbon in May
May’s edge is the pairing: a 73.0°F high with more than fourteen hours of light. Warm enough for a whole day outdoors, mild enough that 3 p.m. in Belém is not a punishment, and long enough to leave two usable hours after the last monument closes. The month takes back exactly one date. On 1 May, Jerónimos and the Gulbenkian both close, on top of their usual Monday and Tuesday closures, so a trip landing on the first needs its indoor day shifted.
The Jerónimos cloister is €18, open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:30 to 17:30 with last entry at 17:00, closed Mondays, and it provides no audio guides at all. The church keeps separate hours: 10:30 to 17:00 Tuesday to Saturday, 14:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and religious holidays. Belém Tower is €15, with 50 percent reductions for over-65s, 13-to-24s and family tickets. Out at Parque das Nações, the Oceanário runs 10:00 to 20:00 with last entry at 19:00 and prices by slot: €29 from 10:00, €27 from 12:00, €25 from 16:00, minus 5 percent online.
Free in May is narrower than the internet claims. The Acesso 52 waiver at Jerónimos and Belém Tower covers Portuguese nationals and residents on any day of the year, so an American visitor pays €18 and €15 whatever the hour, Sunday morning included. Children up to and including 12 enter Jerónimos free, and under-3s are free at the Oceanário. At the Gulbenkian (€18 all-inclusive, €12 for the CAM alone, €8 for temporary shows, Wednesday to Monday 10:00 to 18:00), the free windows are Saturday 18:00 to 21:00 for under-30s holding the no-cost Cartão Gulbenkian, and Sunday from 14:00 for under-18s and specific cardholders.
Lisbon in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs west. Tram 28 at 8 a.m. on a loaded €1.90 ticket instead of the €3.30 on-board fare, then into Belém for the 09:30 opening at Jerónimos with the ticket already on your phone. Lunch after noon, Belém Tower at 14:00 while the wind is still polite, and back into Baixa by four, when the light softens and the ticket desks are winding down. Hold the last stretch for Alfama: viewpoints from 7 p.m., dinner at 8:30, the sun gone at 8:43 and the sky still usable for another half hour.
Day two goes north and east. Gulbenkian at 10:00 for €16 with the CAM and its garden, then the Oceanário on the €25 slot from 16:00, comfortably inside the 19:00 last entry and inside the ninety minutes to two hours the aquarium quotes. If the sky turns, and 1.9 days a month bring 10 mm or more, reverse the order: the aquarium and the Gulbenkian both work wet, Belém Tower may simply be shut, and Sintra in real rain is a hillside of queues under dripping trees. The €11.40 day ticket covers that train either way.

The three columns move one way, and the rain moves fastest. April brings 2.50 inches over 7.7 wet days with a 67.8°F high, May 2.00 inches over 5.7 days at 73.0°F, June just 0.53 inch over 2.0 days at 79.0°F. The sea barely notices the calendar: 62.2°F, then 63.1°F, then 66.8°F. All of it is the same IPMA station and the same marine average, so the columns line up without an asterisk.
Shift four weeks earlier and you buy a quieter city for two extra wet days and afternoons 5°F cooler. Shift four weeks later and June hands over a near-dry month plus the warmest water of the three, then charges for it in heat, demand, and one closed door: Jerónimos shuts on 13 June for Santo António, Lisbon’s own municipal holiday. Is May a good time to visit Lisbon?
Yes for walkers, for monument-and-museum travelers, and for anyone who wants dinner outdoors without August. At 73.0°F the hills are a pleasure rather than a negotiation, and 5.7 wet days out of 31 is a risk most itineraries absorb without a rebuild. No if the water is the reason for the trip: 63.1°F, and remember that figure is an average of daily maxima, buys a plunge and a towel, not an afternoon.
Swimmers should move to June or later, where 66.8°F is still cool but the rain collapses to 0.53 inch across 2.0 days. Travelers hunting the emptiest monuments and the softest rates should look at April instead and accept 7.7 wet days as the toll. Anyone weighing the whole country’s calendar rather than one city’s will get more from the twelve-month verdict.
What no other month matches: 14 hours 21 minutes of light on the 15th with a high of only 73.0°F, an evening that keeps going long after the last entry at 17:00, and no plan built around shade.

Book the Jerónimos cloister online the day your flights are confirmed, keep 1 May off the Belém plan, and put €10 of zapping on a €0.50 navegante card at the airport station. One rule is better learned before the gate than at it: that €1.90 ticket covers one journey within one hour, and it will not let you back into the metro twice in a row.
