Most Florida budgets start from one number: the price of a day at an Orlando gate. Keep it. Then look at what the rest of the state charges. Eleven National Park Service units. Springs where manatees spend the winter. A Spanish fort in St. Augustine at $15 a head. A road that runs 113 miles over open water. The gate price on that entire list tops out at $35.
None of that asks you to skip the theme parks. It changes what the other days look like. One vehicle fee at the Everglades covers seven days and everyone in the car. Lummus Park in South Beach costs nothing at any hour of the day or night. The one line that does take real money, the Dry Tortugas ferry at about $250, buys eight hours and a fort reachable only by boat or seaplane.

Think twice before: stacking two Everglades entrances into one day, or driving to Kennedy Space Center on a launch date without checking the morning of.

Nearly every place named below sits off a highway exit, and the charge that repeats is the one attached to the car. A Homestead morning, a Crystal River afternoon and a Key West sunset are three separate drives, and two of them eat a full day of road. Getting around Florida handles the tolls and the transponder. What a Florida trip costs puts the gate fees next to the hotel line, where they look small.

The Park Service runs eleven units in Florida. Only three are titled National Park: Biscayne, Dry Tortugas and Everglades. The other eight are preserves, seashores, monuments and memorials, and the gap between the two groups is measured in hours, not prestige. Castillo de San Marcos is a morning inside a town you were already walking. Everglades is a day with a drive at each end. Our parks guide takes all eleven in order.
Everglades entry is $35 for a private vehicle, $30 for a motorcycle and $20 on foot or by bicycle, and the receipt stays good for seven consecutive days at every entrance. That second clause matters more than the number. A Homestead morning on Monday and a Shark Valley afternoon on Thursday cost one fee between them. Nobody needs to cram them into one afternoon to save money.
The pass arithmetic is quick. The park’s own annual card is $70, so it pays from the third vehicle entry. The America the Beautiful pass runs $80 for US citizens and residents, $250 for everyone else, and covers one private vehicle or four per-person fees at federal sites nationwide. Two Everglades entries plus one adult ticket at Castillo de San Marcos already comes to $85. On the Tortugas ferry no pass saves a dollar, because the fare has the park fee inside it.
Everglades National Park: the three entrances and drive times between them
The park has three road entrances plus the interior visitor center at Flamingo, and the Park Service puts at least an hour of driving between each of them. Shark Valley opens off the Tamiami Trail west of Miami. The Homestead gate is far to the south. Gulf Coast sits over at Everglades City, on the other coast entirely. One ticket covers all three, and on a single day the ticket is the only thing they share.
A one-day visit therefore picks one entrance and stays with it. Homestead for the Anhinga Trail boardwalk and the long road down to Flamingo. Shark Valley for the paved loop into the sawgrass. Gulf Coast for the water and the islands. Attempting two burns roughly two hours of daylight on asphalt. Everglades airboat tours: Tamiami Trail operators, inside and outside the park
The road itself is the boundary. Operators on the south side of the Tamiami Trail launch inside the national park. Those on the north side launch into Water Conservation Area 3A, which is outside it. Both sell an hour on the sawgrass, both are legal, and only one of them is the park. Three names circulate as the only outfits permitted inside, Coopertown, Everglades Safari Park and Gator Park, but the NPS pages we read publish no list of airboat concessioners. Treat the names as unconfirmed and ask which side of the road the boat puts in from.
Dry Tortugas National Park: the ferry, the fare and how far ahead to book
Seventy miles west of Key West, with no road and no bridge reaching it. Four ways across the water exist: the ferry, a seaplane, your own boat, or a permitted charter. Everything about a Tortugas day follows from that sentence, including the fact that a missed check-in is a missed park.
The Yankee Freedom III leaves Key West at 8 a.m. every day, and check-in closes before 7:30. The 2026 adult fare sits around $250, with the park entrance fee, snorkeling gear, breakfast and lunch carried inside it. Fares move, and this one has moved before, so read the operator’s own page on the day you book rather than trusting a figure printed anywhere else.
The Park Service says the boat sells out months in advance. February through April is when that bites hardest, since it is the dry, calm, expensive stretch when everyone wants the same crossing. Booking a month out is our own margin rather than the operator’s rule, and the seaplane is the fallback when the deck is full.
Swimming with manatees at Crystal River: season dates and the kayak rule
Manatee season at Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge opens November 15 and closes March 31. The animals move into the warm springs when the Gulf cools, which is why the calendar and not the weather forecast decides this trip. Outside those dates the water is still lovely and the manatees are mostly elsewhere.
Now the reversal that catches paddlers. Kayaks and canoes are allowed inside Three Sisters Springs only between April 1 and November 14, meaning the season that brings the manatees is exactly the season that closes the spring to paddle craft. A kayak booked for January reaches the boardwalk view and the surrounding water, not the spring itself.
The Three Sisters Springs trails run 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. year-round, closed on Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. An entrance fee applies, and it is set by the City of Crystal River rather than by the refuge, so the price you find on a federal page is not the price at the door.
One line to leave alone: the claim that Crystal River is the only place in the United States where swimming with manatees is legal appears on a great many websites and on none of the Fish and Wildlife Service pages we read. What the refuge does say is that it was the only one created specifically to protect the manatee. That is a different sentence, and it is the true one.
Kennedy Space Center: hours, what admission includes and launch-day closures
The Visitor Complex runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Standard admission is commonly described as covering Space Shuttle Atlantis, the Shuttle Launch Experience, Heroes & Legends, the Rocket Garden, the IMAX films and the bus tour out to the Apollo/Saturn V Center. The bus is the long part of the day, and it comes inside the ticket rather than beside it. Plan on the full opening span, not a half day squeezed before a beach afternoon.
On price we have to be plain. The complex publishes no single figure and sells dated tickets instead, so the amount changes with the calendar. Resellers list roughly $77 for an adult and $67 for a child aged 3 to 11 for 2026, free under 3 (est.). We could not confirm those numbers at the official source. Use them to size the day, then buy from the complex itself and read the real total at checkout.
The risk here belongs to the place. A launch is the reason people come and also the reason the gates can shut at short notice. If a specific date carries the whole trip, check the day before and again that morning, and give the itinerary somewhere else to go on the Space Coast if the road closes.
Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine: entry fee, hours and closing days
Fifteen dollars buys an adult ticket to the Castillo, and it stays valid seven consecutive days. The age line is 16: everyone 15 and under enters free, accompanied by an adult. Two parents with three children under 16 pay $30 for the family, which is why this fort ends up on more itineraries than its size suggests.
First admission is 9 a.m., last admission 5 p.m., and everyone is out of the fort at 5:15. It opens seven days a week with two exceptions in the year, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The coquina walls face the bay, the gun deck catches the wind, and the whole visit fits inside a morning in a town you were already walking.
Free beaches in Florida, and where you pay to park

Lummus Park is the sand in front of Ocean Drive, running from 5th to 15th Street in South Beach. It costs nothing, it never closes, and it arrives equipped: lifeguards, public restrooms, picnic tables under the palms. Two different charges get filed under one word. Access is what a state park collects at its gate. Parking is what a city collects at its lot, and parking is the one most trips meet, because the sand behind the meter is free. Miami Beach charges for the car. Fort Zachary Taylor charges at the gate and the number covers the whole vehicle.
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park holds the beach locals point visitors toward, and it is walkable from Old Town. Entry is $6.00 per vehicle for up to eight people, plus a $0.50 county surcharge per head. A single-occupant car or a motorcycle pays $4.50, and arriving on foot or by bicycle costs $2.50. Gates run 8 a.m. to sundown, 365 days a year, while the fort itself shuts at 5 p.m., a good hour or two before the beach does. More of the island’s hours sit in our Key West guide.
What free sand does not cover is the meter beside it. South Pointe Park costs nothing to enter, but its lot starts at $2 an hour and switches to a $20 flat day rate at weekends and on public holidays. Crandon Park on Key Biscayne asks $7 to park on a weekday and $10 at the weekend. Across a week of beach mornings the lot quietly outspends the Everglades gate. Museums in Miami: Vizcaya’s closing day and the PAMM free hours
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens sits in north Coconut Grove and is closed on Tuesdays, the single fact that ruins the most Miami afternoons. The other six days it opens at 9:30 a.m. with last admission at 4:30. Adult entry is $20 while restoration work continues, down from the usual $25. Children 6 to 12 pay $5, under-6s enter free. The Perez Art Museum Miami hands out two free windows. Every Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., and all day on the second Saturday of each month. Both are the museum’s busiest slots, and both turn a downtown evening on the bay into a night that costs only what the garage takes.
Driving the Overseas Highway: mile markers, timing and where you cannot stop
The Overseas Highway covers 113 miles, and its green mile markers count down as you go: about 126 at Florida City, 0 in Key West. Four hours if nothing tempts you. Six to eight once the sandbars, the fish sandwiches and the bridge overlooks start doing their work, which is the realistic figure. Our Florida road trip lays the legs out in order.
There is no safe place to stop on the Seven Mile Bridge itself, and the pull-offs people picture do not exist. The old bridge running alongside does that job instead: a restored two-mile span open to walkers and cyclists, a car park at the Marathon end, and Pigeon Key sitting halfway out. Park, walk, photograph, drive on.
Mallory Square runs its Sunset Celebration every night of the year, weather permitting. It starts roughly two hours before sunset and holds until dusk has drained out of the sky, so arrival time follows the calendar rather than a fixed hour. In late December, with the sun down before six, that puts the whole thing on the dock by mid-afternoon.
The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum opens 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and takes walk-ins, no timed slot required. Adults pay $19, children $7, under-6s nothing. The cats come with the house.
Flying into Key West saves those four hours. It also skips the two-mile walk on the old bridge and the countdown of the markers, and it lands you on the island without a car. Old Town walks fine. At Fort Zachary Taylor’s gate the fee is written per vehicle, so arriving on foot there costs $2.50 and arriving by taxi costs whatever the taxi costs.
Hurricane season in Florida: dates, peak month and the cheapest hotel months
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, with most of the activity packed between mid-August and mid-October. That window sits on top of the wet season’s afternoon storms, so an outdoor day in September needs a second plan behind it and a refundable line on the booking.
Hotel rates run the opposite way. South Florida is cheapest from August to October and dearest from February to April, and February to April is the dry, warm stretch everyone is bidding for. The real trade is money against certainty: pay peak and the boardwalk is dry, pay low and keep the reservation cancellable. The month-by-month verdict works through it season by season, and November is where we would put our own money.
The last word
Sort these by drive time before you sort them by price. The $80 federal pass covers one private vehicle or four per-person fees, and it will not shorten the eight hours the Tortugas ferry asks of you, or the hour of asphalt between Shark Valley and Homestead. Take one gate, one spring or one boat per day and let the $35 fall where it falls. The manatees keep their own calendar regardless: November 15, whatever the hotel rates are doing that week.
