They are readings from a physical station in town rather than a satellite-grid reanalysis, so they reflect the air over the city itself.
The SMN counts 13.7 days of measurable rain in an average May, a little under half the month, and its station sheet does not publish the threshold for a rain day. Spread over those days, 3.85 inches means a modest amount on each one. We hold no data on the hour the rain falls, so keep an indoor option, such as the Museo de las Culturas, ready for every day.

Monte Alban crowns the Cerro del Jaguar above the valley. It was the Zapotec capital for some 1,500 years and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Entry is 210 pesos (105 for Mexican nationals and foreign residents in Mexico), open daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., last entry 4 p.m. Mitla and Yagul also charge 210 pesos and open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Yagul sits just past Tlacolula on the Panamerican Highway. The Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, in the former Santo Domingo convent, is 210 pesos, Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Hierve el Agua’s petrified waterfalls and mineral pools, east of the city near San Lorenzo Albarradas, are managed by the local community, which collects its own fee on site. We could not verify the amount, or the water’s temperature. What moves with the month is the air, 92.8°F on an average afternoon. Teotitlan del Valle, on the road to Mitla, is known for hand-woven, hand-dyed wool rugs, and small mezcal palenques around the valley open their stills, where roasted agave is distilled the traditional way.
Walking the Zocalo, shaded by laurel trees and framed by the cathedral and the state government palace, needs no ticket. Neither does browsing Tlacolula’s Sunday market, a weekly market for local food and crafts near Mitla and Yagul. We found no free-admission days for the INAH sites, so the resident rate above is the only reduction we can report.
Oaxaca itinerary for May
The first day, hilltop and center. Be at Monte Alban’s gate when it opens at 8 a.m. (210 pesos) and climb while the air is far from the 92.8°F average high, leaving the hill by late morning. Take lunch in the shade in town. After lunch, go to the Museo de las Culturas, open until 5 p.m. and closed Mondays, so swap it for the Zocalo if you land on one. Sunset is at 6:52 p.m., so the last light belongs to the laurel trees of the Zocalo.
The second day, the valley loop. Head east on the road to Mitla: rugs in Teotitlan del Valle first, then Tlacolula (its market runs on Sunday, so make this the Sunday if the calendar allows), Yagul just past town with last entry at 4 p.m., and Mitla to close. Each site is 210 pesos. If the sky turns gray, keep the rug workshops and a mezcal palenque, and trade an open-air ruin for the museum, open Tuesday to Sunday.
