Merida began in 1542, when Spanish conquistadors founded it atop the Maya city of T’ho. The 2020 census counted 921,770 residents in the city and 1,316,090 in its metropolitan area, so the streets you walk are lived in.
The layers are easy to read on foot. The Cathedral of San Ildefonso dates to 1598, the mansions of Paseo de Montejo come from the early twentieth century, and the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya covers the civilization beneath both. The State Department puts Yucatan at Level 1, and the airport sits less than 5 kilometers southwest of downtown.

The Yucatan Peninsula belongs to three Mexican states: Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo. It is the historical heartland of the Maya civilization. Merida stands in Yucatan, the first of them, and travel advisories are issued state by state.
How old is the cathedral in Merida?
The Cathedral of San Ildefonso dates to 1598, and it was the first cathedral built in continental North America. Even a traveler who usually skips churches can spend a few minutes at a building with that title.

What is there to see on Paseo de Montejo in Merida?
Mansions from the early twentieth century line Paseo de Montejo, the city’s signature avenue, and original sculpture stands among them. It is a walk best taken with your eyes up.
Las Casas Gemelas, the Twin Houses, were completed in 1911. They make a good landmark to aim for on a first stroll along the avenue.
Interiors are a separate question. We have not checked which of the mansions open their doors, or at what hours, so treat the avenue as an outdoor walk until you have confirmed a specific address.
What are the hours of the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya?
The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is open Wednesday to Monday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and closed on Tuesdays. The museum itself publishes those hours (checked Sep 29, 2026). Admission prices are not given here, and hours can change, so confirm on the museum’s site before you go. Its subject is the Maya civilization, the peninsula’s historical heartland, and it makes a natural companion to a city built atop T’ho.

Fly into Merida International Airport (IATA: MID), operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR). It sits less than 5 kilometers southwest of downtown, so you land on the city’s own edge.
MID handled 3,939,692 passengers in 2025, up 3.5% on the year before, and ranks ninth-busiest in Mexico by passenger volume. Those are the airport’s own traffic counts as relayed by Mexico’s civil aviation authority.
We have not confirmed the ground services from MID to the center (mode, fare, frequency or last departure), so none are quoted. Ask your hotel about a pickup, or check with the operator, ASUR, before you fly.
If your flight lands on a Tuesday, the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is closed. Spend that first day on the cathedral of 1598 and a walk along Paseo de Montejo, and save the museum for Wednesday.
Is Merida safe to visit?
As of the U.S. State Department’s Mexico travel advisory dated May 29, 2026, the State of Yucatan is at Level 1, “Exercise normal precautions.” That is the lowest level on the department’s scale. It applies to Yucatan only, and other Mexican states carry their own levels in the same advisory, so read the current version before you book.
In 2015 the Karolinska Institute of Sweden certified Merida an International Safe Community for its level of public safety. That certification dates from 2015, so it works as background. The advisory is the current signal.

The season peaks around September 10, and most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October. If your dates land in those weeks, book fares and rooms you can change.
