Guadalajara in October is a city of sunlit plazas and cool mornings. The cathedral’s twin yellow-tiled spires anchor the Plaza de Armas, the Teatro Degollado faces the cathedral, and the crafts towns of Tlaquepaque and Tonalá sit just south of the center and next door to each other.

The month is a hinge between seasons. September logs 16.4 days of measurable rain in Guadalajara and November logs 2.1. October lands at 6.7, with afternoons still near 81.7°F and mornings down to 57.0°F.

Guadalajara weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days

Every figure here comes from a weather station, not a model: the Servicio Meteorologico Nacional (CONAGUA) observatory, station 14065, in the city center at 1,551 m. Its 1991-2020 normals for October give an average high of 81.7°F, an average low of 57.0°F and 2.20 inches of precipitation. The western suburbs toward Zapopan sit a little higher than the observatory, so treat the numbers as those of the historic core.

Mexico’s national weather service (SMN) counts 6.7 days of measurable rain in an average October and does not publish the threshold behind that count. In practice that is about one day in five. Over a week in the city, expect one or two wet days and pack for them, without rebuilding the schedule around the sky.

Between the 57.0°F average low and the 81.7°F average high sits a swing of 24.7 degrees. Pack a sweater or light jacket for early starts and evenings, breathable layers for the afternoon, sun protection, and a compact umbrella or rain shell for the wet days.

On October 15 daylight lasts about 11 hours 42 minutes, from sunrise at 6:47 a.m. to sunset at 6:30 p.m. (Mexico City time, the zone Guadalajara keeps). Schedule walks and plaza time before dinner, because the light is fading by 6:30 p.m.

How warm is Guadalajara in October?

Guadalajara is inland, so there is no sea temperature to quote and no beach forecast to read. The temperature that matters is the air: an October average high of 81.7°F and an average low of 57.0°F at the observatory. Both are averages across many days, so any single day can run warmer or cooler.

Expect sweater weather at breakfast, short sleeves by afternoon, and the sweater again once the sun goes down. A hat and a bottle of water make the afternoon walk between the Plaza de Armas and the Hospicio Cabañas manageable.

We found no count of frost nights in our sources, so we cannot say how often a night drops toward freezing. The average low of 57.0°F sits well above freezing, and November’s 49.5°F is the colder reading to plan around if you shift the trip.

How busy is Guadalajara in October? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate data, so we crown no month expensive or cheap. What SMN’s rain gauge does record is a pivot: 7.20 inches in September, 2.20 in October and 0.44 in November. October sits in the middle of that slide.

We could not verify the lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Ask the hotel whether tax is already in the quoted rate before you compare totals across two properties.

If one line of the budget deserves extra money, make it the room’s location. A base inside the historic center puts the cathedral, the Teatro Degollado and the Plaza Tapatía within walking range, and a shower costs a short walk instead of a taxi fare.

Things to do in Guadalajara in October

With 6.7 rain days in place of September’s 16.4, October leaves room for the outdoor circuit. The Plaza Tapatía links the cathedral area to the Hospicio Cabañas, past the Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres. Beyond the center, Tlaquepaque and Tonalá offer crafts, and the town of Tequila, in the agave fields west of Guadalajara, offers tours at several distilleries. The Hospicio Cabañas has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, across 2.34 hectares. Manuel Tolsa designed it in the Neoclassical style, and it now houses the Instituto Cultural Cabañas and the chapel murals José Clemente Orozco painted in the late 1930s. We found no admission price for it. The Museo Regional de Guadalajara, in the historic center, charges 210 pesos (105 pesos for Mexican nationals and foreign residents in Mexico) and opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Indoors, October changes nothing: the Orozco chapel and the Museo Regional rooms are the same in any month. The walk between them does change, from a 57.0°F morning to an 81.7°F afternoon. Because the Museo Regional is closed Mondays, a Monday belongs to the plazas and to the covered Mercado San Juan de Dios (also called Mercado Libertad), with stalls for food, leather and crafts over several floors. Tonalá’s pottery and crafts market runs Thursdays and Sundays.

We found no admission prices for the cathedral, the Teatro Degollado or the Hospicio Cabañas, so we don’t call any of them free. The open plazas around them cost nothing to cross: the Plaza de Armas at the cathedral’s door, and the Plaza Tapatía that runs on toward the Hospicio.

Guadalajara itinerary for October

Day one, the historic center. Begin at the Museo Regional at 9 a.m., when it opens (210 pesos, closed Mondays), with the sweater on for the walk. Late morning, step to the Plaza de Armas for the cathedral and the Teatro Degollado. After lunch at the Mercado San Juan de Dios, follow the Plaza Tapatía to the Hospicio Cabañas and the Orozco murals while the afternoon sits near 81.7°F, and check its hours before you go. Sunset comes at 6:30 p.m., so finish back on the plaza while there is light.

Day two, Tlaquepaque and Tonalá. Spend the morning in Tlaquepaque, just south of the center, for pottery and blown glass, and go on to Tonalá if it is a Thursday or Sunday, when its big crafts market runs. If the sky turns, keep the day but move under cover: the Mercado San Juan de Dios in the city, or the Museo Regional if it isn’t a Monday. Tequila is a separate outing, and we found no travel times for it, so give it a day of its own.

Guadalajara in October vs September and November

From September to October the average high barely moves, 82.0°F to 81.7°F, while the average low falls from 61.3°F to 57.0°F and rain drops from 7.20 inches over 16.4 days to 2.20 inches over 6.7. By November the high is 79.3°F and the low 49.5°F, and only 0.44 inches falls over 2.1 days. All three months come from the same SMN station and the same 1991-2020 period.

Going four weeks earlier means nights 4.3 degrees warmer (a 61.3°F average low) and 16.4 rain days instead of 6.7. Going four weeks later cuts the rain to 2.1 days and 0.44 inches, and the average low drops 7.5 degrees to 49.5°F, so the mornings call for a proper coat.

Is October a good time to visit Guadalajara?

Yes, for anyone planning to walk. Plazas, museums, the market and the crafts towns all work with 6.7 rain days and afternoons near 81.7°F. It suits travelers who can shrug off a shower and carry a sweater for 57.0°F mornings, and it suits a wet-weather backup plan built around the Museo Regional and the Mercado San Juan de Dios.
