Takayama in April: Spring Festival, Cherry Blossoms, Weather and a Two-Day Plan

In April the wooden lattice fronts of Takayama’s old merchant streets stand against branches just coming into flower, and the sound of festival drums and flutes carries over the rooftops. Sake breweries hang fresh cedar balls above their doors, and the river that runs through town reflects pale sky instead of winter gray. For anyone planning a spring trip to the Hida mountains, April is when this small city in the Japan Alps feels most awake.

What is the weather like in Takayama in April?

April in Takayama is cool in the morning and mild by afternoon, a clear step up from March but still short of the warmth that arrives in May.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Hours of sunshine Daylight on the 15th
March 49.6 29.1 4.82 13.0 154 11 h 54 min
April 62.6 38.1 4.88 11.0 174 13 h 05 min
May 73.2 48.9 4.93 10.6 189 14 h 03 min

The rain comes in many modest rounds rather than a single wet spell, and on roughly one day in three you will want something waterproof. Humidity stays moderate, which keeps the air feeling fresh on dry days.

Layers are the answer. Mornings and evenings call for a warm sweater and a jacket, while the middle of the day is comfortable in a light jacket, which matches the general advice for spring in Japan. Daylight stretches well into the evening, so a stroll along the river after dinner is possible without hurrying back.

The light is softer than in summer and the sun shows itself for a good share of the month. Wet pavement and wooden eaves glisten after a shower, and the surrounding mountains can look sharper once the air clears.

What to do in Takayama in April

April in Takayama revolves around the spring festival, the arrival of cherry blossoms and the first mountain vegetables on the table. Takayama sits near the northern Japan Alps in Gifu prefecture and is sometimes called the Little Kyoto of Hida, a nickname that comes from its well-preserved quarter of Edo-style streets. Spring is a good time to walk them.

Cherry blossoms can be seen here from the middle to the end of April, about three weeks later than in Nagoya. That makes Takayama a place where you can catch the blossom after it has faded in the lowlands. Riverbanks, temple grounds and the small gardens behind merchant houses are the spots to look.

The spring festival and its floats

The Takayama spring festival, tied to the Hie shrine and often called the Sanno Matsuri, is held in mid-April and is the event that shapes the month. Tall, lacquered festival floats called yatai are wheeled through the old streets, and some carry mechanical puppets (karakuri) that perform to music while the crowd watches from the roadside.

The floats are carved, gilded and hung with fine textiles, and the pulling of them is as much a neighborhood affair as a spectacle. Expect drums, flutes, happi coats and the smell of street snacks near the shrine. When the festival is in progress, the pace of the old town changes, with the main streets given over to the procession.

The exact days shift slightly from one year to the next, so it is worth planning the stay around the middle of the month if the festival matters to you. If you miss it, the old town still carries the same craft traditions in its workshops and storefronts.

Sanmachi Suji and the old town

The old town is built around a few parallel lanes of dark wooden merchant houses, lattice windows and low eaves, with a small canal running along the edge of the streets. Many buildings house sake breweries, craft shops, small museums and cafés, so you can move from tasting to browsing to a sit-down with tea in a few steps.

The lanes reward a slow pace, with open doorways giving glimpses of courtyards and old storehouses. Rain suits the district too, since the eaves shelter you while the wood darkens.

Along the river you will find the morning markets, where local growers and craftspeople set up stalls with pickles, fresh produce, flowers and sweets. In spring, mountain vegetables and seasonal pickles are among the things to look for.

Historic buildings and a village of old farmhouses

Beyond the lanes, Takayama has historic buildings that tell the story of the town as a seat of government and of craftsmen. The Takayama Jinya is the former government office of the Hida region, a large complex of wooden halls and tatami rooms where you walk from space to space and look out on gardens that are greening in April.

The Hida Folk Village gathers traditional thatched farmhouses on a hillside, with paths between them that pass ponds and small plots of vegetables. In April, spring plantings and blossoms give the grounds a lighter feel than in the winter months. Some houses can be entered so you can see the hearths and the way families once lived through the snow.

Spring food and sake

The food of Takayama is mountain food. Hida beef is grilled, simmered or served on skewers, and miso is grilled on a magnolia leaf with mushrooms and vegetables in the dish called hoba miso. Takayama ramen, a soy-based broth with thin noodles, is the quick lunch, and mitarashi dango, rice dumplings in a sweet-savory soy glaze, are eaten from street stalls.

In spring, wild vegetables from the mountains, known as sansai, appear in tempura and pickles. The local sake breweries pour tastings in small cups, and a cedar ball hanging at the door tells you a brewery has pressed its new batch. Pairing a cup with a skewer of beef while the blossoms open is a very Takayama way to end a walk.

A two-day itinerary for Takayama in April

Day 1 belongs to the old town. Start with the morning market along the river, where you can sample pickles and buy a snack, then walk into the lanes of merchant houses while the shops open.

Later, visit a sake brewery or two for a tasting and look for cherry trees along the river and in temple grounds, with daylight lasting into the evening.

Day 2 moves to the hills and the festival or its aftermath. In the morning, go to the Hida Folk Village, where the thatched farmhouses sit among spring plantings and the fire pits inside the houses give a sense of winter life. Eat lunch on the way back, perhaps dango from a stall or a simple noodle shop.

In the afternoon, return to the craft shops and small museums of the old town you did not enter the day before, and if the spring festival is on, watch the floats and puppets. If rain sets in, spend the hours in museums, cafés and the covered shopping lanes, and keep the evening for a long meal and a last cup of local sake.

Is Takayama busy in April?

April is a season with plenty of reasons to visit Takayama, from the spring festival to the blossoms that arrive in the second half of the month. The festival draws people to the old streets in the middle of the month, and the cherry trees follow toward the end.

Golden Week begins on April 29, a holiday period that runs to May 5 and includes four official public holidays: Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day. Those last days of April therefore sit at the start of one of Japan’s main holiday stretches, which shapes how the end of the month feels in a town like this.

If a national holiday falls on a Sunday, the next working day becomes a holiday as well, and a day sandwiched between two holidays also becomes one. These rules can extend the break and change the rhythm of the town around the holidays.

In rural areas, shops often close earlier, sometimes as early as 6:00 p.m., so plan dinner and last purchases with daylight in mind. Early April and the weeks between the festival and Golden Week have a more measured pace, with the mood set by the blooming trees and the mild days.

What to pack for Takayama in April

Pack for a mountain town in spring, where the mornings are cool and the afternoons mild.

  • A light jacket and a sweater, for layering through the day and the cool evenings.
  • A compact rain jacket or umbrella, since rain falls on roughly a third of April days.
  • Comfortable walking shoes that can handle wet pavement in the old town.
  • A warm hat or scarf for mornings, when a few cold spells can still arrive.
  • Cash in yen for market stalls and small shops.
  • A small day bag for snacks, souvenirs and layers you peel off.

Good to know before you go

Takayama Station on the JR Takayama Line does not accept IC cards, so local line tickets must be bought in cash. Shops in urban areas of Japan are generally open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., but in rural areas many close earlier, sometimes by 6:00 p.m., which matters in a mountain town. Golden Week starts on April 29, so the last days of the month fall in a national holiday period.

Takayama in April vs March and May

Moving the trip four weeks earlier brings you to a colder, snowier Takayama. March still sees plenty of snow and sleet, the days are shorter and the cherry trees are not yet in bloom. It suits travelers who want a wintry mountain town, but the spring festival and the blossoms are still ahead.

Moving four weeks later means warmer weather, longer days and more sunshine, with the blossoms gone from the town and the trees in leaf. May also overlaps with Golden Week at its start, which changes the feel of the town. It is the better choice for those who want to walk the hills in comfortable warmth.

Choose April if you want the festival, the first blossoms and mild days without the full warmth of May. Shift earlier for winter scenery, or later for warmth and long days.

Is April a good time to visit Takayama?

Yes, April is a very good time to visit Takayama for travelers who like seasonal events, old wooden streets and food tied to the calendar. It suits people who want to see the spring festival and the cherry blossoms in the same trip, and who are happy with layers and a rain jacket.

It is less suited to those who want warm weather for hiking in light clothing, or who prefer winter scenes. On arrival, head for the old town and the river first, since the lanes, the market and the breweries set the tone for everything else. What is special about April here is the mix of mountain air, festival drums and the first blossoms against dark timber, a combination Takayama offers only for a few weeks of the year.
