JAMAICA · FEBRUARY · 18.41° N
February is the driest of the three winter months in the record we read at Dunn’s River Falls: 1.95 inches of rain, spread over 5.2 days that collect at least a tenth of an inch. Days average 82.3°F, nights 71.6°F, and the sea at the foot of the climb runs 81.2°F. Most American visitors reach the falls from a base in Ocho Rios, which puts the climb inside a morning and leaves the rest of the week for the beach, the coast road and one inland day.
Move the same trip to March and you gain 1.0°F of afternoon air, 83.3°F, and take on 2.76 inches of rain over 7.2 wet days. Move it back to January and you gain the warmest water of the winter, 82.2°F, along with 2.99 inches of rain. Those three columns are the whole question February answers, and the site itself, the town and the drive in from Montego Bay sit in our Ocho Rios guide and the transfers page.

We could not verify the falls’ current admission price, opening hours or guided-climb times, so no ticket figure and no schedule appear here: confirm them with the operator when you book. For most Americans February works as a week rather than a weekend, four to seven nights on the north coast, one flight into Montego Bay and one transfer, and the seven-day route is the ready-made version of that trip.

The figures come from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis for 1991-2020 rather than from an airport station: the model reads a grid cell centered at 18.41° N, 77.10° W, which sits over Ocho Rios about 3 kilometers (2 miles) east of the falls, near enough that the same weather reaches both. On that record February averages a high of 82.3°F, a low of 71.6°F and 1.95 inches of rain. A real thermometer can differ from a modeled cell by a degree or two, most often on the overnight low, so read every figure here as the shape of a month.
Measurable rain falls on 5.2 days in an average February, about one day in five. None of them reach a full inch: the count of days at an inch or more is 0.0 for the month. That is a passing shower rather than a soaking day, and 1.95 inches across four weeks is the lowest total of the winter here. The terraces will be wet regardless, since the climb goes up through the river itself.
Day and night average 10.7°F apart, so a 71.6°F evening asks for nothing heavier than a long-sleeve shirt. The packing that matters is for the water rather than the temperature: shoes with real tread for wet limestone, a dry shirt in the bag for the drive back, and a sealed sleeve for the phone. The rest of the suitcase is in our packing guide.
On February 15 the sun rises at 6:34 a.m. and sets at 6:10 p.m. local time, 11 hours 35 minutes of daylight. A climb begun at 4 p.m. still ends in light, and dinner in Ocho Rios starts after dark, which also sets the hour for any boat trip that depends on nightfall.
Can you swim in Dunn’s River Falls in February? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off the falls averages 81.2°F in February in the Open-Meteo Marine API record, taken as the mean of daily maxima over 2015 to 2024. A daily maximum is the warm end of the day’s water, so a 24-hour mean would sit a shade lower, and the water you step into at 9 a.m. is cooler than 81.2°F suggests.
At that temperature you get in without the shock a 70-degree ocean delivers, and children stay in long enough that sunscreen, not a towel, becomes the issue. The river water on the climb is a separate question: we found no temperature series for the Dunn’s River, so we give no figure for the cascade. The 81.2°F applies to the beach at the bottom of it.
Wind and swell we cannot chart. Our sources carry no wave-height or wind series for this stretch of the north coast in February, so we publish no numbers for surf or chop. For the storm calendar, our hurricane season guide is the page that tracks the months it touches, and the year in full covers the other eleven.
How busy is Dunn’s River Falls in February? Crowds, booking and prices
No occupancy series and no monthly hotel rates for Ocho Rios reached us, so we rank no month cheap and none expensive, and we quote no nightly figure. February is a northern winter month, which is a calendar fact rather than a price signal. The parts of the budget that hold steady across the year, flights, transfers and rooms by category, are costed in our Jamaica trip-cost guide.
Without a rate curve we will not name a cheapest week. What the month’s own numbers justify is locking the two pieces that set your arrival hour, the room and the transfer, and leaving the tours loose: an arrival before noon turns day one into a climbing day, an arrival at five turns it into dinner. Routes and flying times are on the flights page; the drive in is on the transfers page.
We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging tax or the per-night tourism levy at the rates in force, so we give no percentage and no dollar amount. Read the tax line on your confirmation before you compare two quotes, since an all-inclusive and a small hotel may present it very differently. The money and entry questions are gathered in know before you go.
One upgrade changes February in particular: paying for a private transfer so you choose the arrival hour. With 11 hours 35 minutes of daylight and the sun down at 6:10 p.m. on the 15th, a midday landing plus a multi-stop shuttle can absorb the only climbing light of the day. Room category and meal plan behave the same in February as in any other month as far as our sources show.
Things to do in Dunn’s River Falls in February: the climb, the beach and Ocho Rios

What February holds over its neighbors is measurable rain: 1.95 inches against 2.99 in January and 2.76 in March, with 5.2 wet days against 6.4 and 7.2. Two fewer wet days than March, across a month, land on the plans that cannot move indoors, the climb, the beach, a boat, the drive east to Port Antonio or the road up into the Blue Mountains.
The falls sit at the western edge of Ocho Rios, and the beach at the foot of the climb is where the 81.2°F sea figure applies. Since the admission price and the opening hours could not be verified, plan the day around light rather than around a posted time, and use the Ocho Rios guide for the town. West along the coast, the Luminous Lagoon runs after dark, which in February means after 6:10 p.m., and the national shortlist holds the rest.
Across January, February and March the sea moves a single degree in total, 82.2°F down to 81.2°F and back to 81.6°F, while the monthly rain swings by more than an inch. The air does the visible work: a 82.3°F afternoon dries a climber in minutes, and the same afternoon makes the beach the better use of the hours after lunch.
No free-admission day and no February promotion appear in our sources, so we name none. The free parts of the month are the ones the weather supplies: 11 hours 35 minutes of light on the 15th, water at 81.2°F, and a sunset at 6:10 p.m. that arrives before most dinner reservations.
Dunn’s River Falls in February: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise is 6:34 a.m. in mid-February, so breakfast by 7:30 puts you at the falls early, climbing while the air is still close to the 71.6°F overnight average. Dry off on the beach where the water averages 81.2°F, eat in Ocho Rios, and give the 82.3°F afternoon to the sea rather than the coast road. Sunset at 6:10 p.m. sets dinner, and the drive back happens in the dark.
Day two goes inland, a mountain road or a river trip, both of which suit the one February day in five that collects measurable rain, because a shower at 82.3°F costs a shirt and nothing else. If the sky turns on the morning you meant to climb, swap the two days: the long-run count of days at an inch of rain or more is 0.0, so a wet hour usually clears inside the same afternoon. Dunn’s River Falls in February vs January and March
| January | February | March | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 81.4°F | 82.3°F | 83.3°F |
| Average low | 71.8°F | 71.6°F | 71.9°F |
| Rainfall | 2.99 in | 1.95 in | 2.76 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 6.4 | 5.2 | 7.2 |
| Sea surface | 82.2°F | 81.2°F | 81.6°F |
March is the warmest of the three by day at 83.3°F, February sits at 82.3°F and January at 81.4°F, under two degrees across the whole winter. Rain separates them far more clearly: February’s 1.95 inches is a third below January’s 2.99 and 0.81 inch under March’s 2.76, with wet-day counts of 5.2, 6.4 and 7.2. The sea is the flattest line of all, 81.2°F to 82.2°F, January warmest and February coolest.
Shift four weeks back into January and you gain the warmest water of the three, 82.2°F, against 6.4 wet days and an extra inch of rain. Shift four weeks forward into March and you gain 1.0°F of afternoon air against the wettest count of the three, 7.2 days at a tenth of an inch or more. No shift changes the sea by more than a degree, so the decision rests on how much rain you are willing to schedule around. The January page runs the same numbers for its own month.
Is February a good time to visit Dunn’s River Falls?
Yes for anyone whose trip depends on dry ground and open water: 5.2 wet days and 1.95 inches is the least rain the winter offers here, and 81.2°F is warm enough for a long swim off the beach. No for anyone chasing the warmest afternoon, because 82.3°F falls a degree short of March. And no for travelers who need a verifiable bargain, since we hold no rate data for any month of the year.
March is the month to move to if the answer was no: it adds 1.0°F of daytime air and holds the sea at 81.6°F, at the price of two more wet days. January earns the switch only when the water outranks everything else, 82.2°F, and it arrives with 2.99 inches of rain, the wettest of the three.
Only February pairs the driest record of the three, 1.95 inches over 5.2 wet days, with water inside a single degree of the winter maximum.
The last word
In February the arrival hour decides more than the resort does. Land early enough to put the climb on a morning: February’s average low of 71.6°F is the coolest night air of the three winter months, by a fifth of a degree under March, which is what makes a 6:34 a.m. start easy to keep, and the 82.3°F afternoon belongs in the water. Book the transfer with the room, keep the 6:10 p.m. sunset in mind for the drive back, and pack the second dry shirt.
