JAMAICA · JANUARY · 18.41° N
January on Jamaica’s north coast reads mild rather than fierce. The month averages a high of 81.4°F and a low of 71.8°F, with 2.99 inches of rain falling across roughly six wet days, and the sea off the falls sits at 82.2°F, within a degree of its December reading.
Most American trips reach the falls as a half day out of Ocho Rios, so the January question is rarely how many nights to book at the site and more often whether these winter weeks justify the airfare. Our guides to flights from the US and airport transfers handle the arrival. The date itself moves four things: the air, the rain, the water and the length of the day.

JANUARY AT A GLANCE · DUNN’S RIVER FALLS
January keeps December’s warm water and cuts December’s wet days by almost two, which makes it the easier of the two holiday-season months for a climb and a swim.
AVG HIGH 81.4°F · 6.4 WET DAYS · SEA 82.2°F · 11H11 OF DAYLIGHT
Go for: water still near its December warmth, an air temperature that peaks in the low eighties, and fewer wet days than the month before it.
Think twice before: counting on a dry fortnight. January still runs 2.99 inches, a full inch more than February.

Every figure here comes from one of three named sources. The air normals are an ERA5 model reanalysis for the grid cell centered at 18.4074° N, 77.103° W, a cell sitting over Ocho Rios about two miles east of the falls, near enough that the same weather reaches both. No thermometer stands at the site in this series, and a station reading would differ, most often on the overnight low.
Dunn’s River Falls weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | January value |

| Average low | 71.8°F |
| Total precipitation | 2.99 in |

| Days with 1.00 in or more | 0.2 |

The 1991-2020 normals give January a daytime average of 81.4°F, an overnight average of 71.8°F and 2.99 inches of rain. They come from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis, not from a Jamaican weather station, and the difference is worth knowing: a reanalysis blends a square of land and sea into one modeled value, while a station reports one mast in one field. Treat the numbers as the shape of the month rather than as a measured record of the gate.
An average January logs 6.4 days with at least 0.10 inch of rain, so measurable rain lands roughly one day in five. Only 0.2 of a day reaches a full inch, which puts a genuine soaking at about one January in five. Spread 2.99 inches across 6.4 wet days and the typical wet day carries under half an inch, enough to darken the limestone and send people under a roof for a while, rarely enough to write off an afternoon.
Between the average high and the average low sits 9.6°F, a narrow spread that still registers once you are wet and the sun is down. A dry shirt and something with sleeves cover a 72°F evening, and nothing heavier is needed at sea level. Grip for wet rock matters more than any layer you pack, and our packing guide carries the rest of the list.
On January 15 the sun rises at 6:42 a.m. and sets at 5:53 p.m. local time, giving 11 hours 11 minutes of daylight (11:42 and 22:53 UTC at source). At 18° N the light goes quickly once it starts going, so a five o’clock climb ends in dusk and the run back along the coast happens in the dark. Driving in Jamaica covers what night adds to that road.
Can you swim in Dunn’s River Falls in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off the falls at 82.2°F in January, averaged over 2015 to 2024. Read the figure for what it is: a mean of daily maxima, the warmest point of each day rather than a 24-hour average, so it runs a shade above what a full-day mean would show, and the water at nine in the morning sits a touch below it.
At that temperature no one needs neoprene, and a swim at the bottom of the climb stays comfortable for as long as you want to stay in. One distinction to keep straight: 82.2°F is the sea. The river water coming down the limestone is a different body of water fed from the hills behind the coast, and we found no temperature series for it, so we print no number for the cascade itself.
We also found no wave-height or wind series for this stretch of shore in January, so we make no claim about swell, about the prevailing breeze or about which mornings the water lies flat. Ask the operator on the day. Our Ocho Rios guide covers who runs what along this piece of coast.
How busy is Dunn’s River Falls in January? Crowds and prices
January is the first full month after the holiday weeks, and that calendar position is the only demand fact we can state from data we hold. No occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Ocho Rios came back in our checks, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. The twelve-month picture, with the reasoning behind it, lives on the best-time-to-visit page.
Editorial judgment rather than a measured figure: fix the room about six weeks out (est.), then the transfer, then the day at the falls. Lodging drives the length of the drive more than anything else on a north-coast itinerary, and a half-day outing turns into a full one if you sleep on the wrong coast. Where to stay in Jamaica sorts the bases by what each one puts within an hour.
We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate, so no percentage appears anywhere above. We would rather leave a blank than print a rate we have not read at source. The money side of a Jamaica week, from car hire to what a resort adds per night, sits on our trip-cost page.
One upgrade genuinely changes January rather than the trip in general: a transfer that puts you at the gate when it opens instead of mid-morning. With 11 hours 11 minutes of daylight and the air climbing toward 81.4°F after noon, the comfortable hours are the first ones. Airport transfers lists the ways in and what each one asks of your morning.
Things to do in Dunn’s River Falls in January

January’s offer sits between its neighbors. The sea holds 82.2°F, within a degree of December’s 83.1°F, while wet days drop from 8.2 in December to 6.4. February pulls the other way: drier at 1.95 inches, but with the water down to 81.2°F. Warm water and a mostly dry calendar coincide more comfortably in January than in either month beside it.
The falls are the anchor, and we could not verify the current admission price, the opening hours or whether the climb is running on its usual schedule, so no fee and no time appear here. Our page on conditions after Hurricane Melissa carries what we know about the north coast. What we can attach to the surrounding names is climate: the grid cell behind that 81.4°F sits over Ocho Rios, two miles away, so the town’s January reads the same as the falls’.
What January changes at these places is the air, not the rock. The limestone is the same staircase in July. The difference is a day peaking at 81.4°F and an evening settling toward 71.8°F, a 9.6°F swing that decides whether you want sleeves at dinner on the coast. Spend that same evening up in the Blue Mountains and it runs colder again, though we hold no station figure for that range and give none.
We could not verify any free-entry day at the falls in January, so we name none. The unticketed part of the month is the evening: sunset at 5:53 p.m. on January 15 puts the last hour of light before dinner instead of after it, which is also why an after-dark outing such as the Luminous Lagoon fits this month without costing you daylight.
Dunn’s River Falls in January: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs ahead of the heat. Sunrise at 6:42 a.m., breakfast by seven, and the gate at whatever opening hour the operator confirms when you book. Take the climb in the first cool hours, then swim while the sea works up toward its 82.2°F daily maximum. Eat at midday under shade, since the air does its hardest work in the early afternoon at 81.4°F. Keep late afternoon loose and be off the coast road by 5:53 p.m., when the light drops.
Day two goes inland or along the shore: coffee country in the Blue Mountains, or the market streets and craft stalls of Ocho Rios if the group wants a slower one. If the weather turns, the odds favor a short interruption, with 6.4 wet days in the month, an average under half an inch on each, and only 0.2 of a day reaching a full inch. Move the order of the day rather than canceling it, and put the indoor hour at midday.
Dunn’s River Falls in January vs December and February
| Measure | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 81.9°F | 81.4°F | 82.3°F |
| Average low | 73.2°F | 71.8°F | 71.6°F |
| Precipitation | 3.43 in | 2.99 in | 1.95 in |
| Days ≥ 0.10 in | 8.2 | 6.4 | 5.2 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 83.1°F | 82.2°F | 81.2°F |
Across the three months the air barely moves: 0.9°F separates December’s 81.9°F high from February’s 82.3°F, and January sits lowest of the three at 81.4°F. Rain does the real sorting. December delivers 3.43 inches over 8.2 wet days, January 2.99 inches over 6.4, February 1.95 inches over 5.2, so February’s total is roughly two-thirds of January’s. The sea runs the opposite way, cooling steadily from 83.1°F to 81.2°F.
Shift four weeks later and you gain a full inch less rain and one fewer wet day, and you give up 1.0°F of sea temperature and 0.9°F on the overnight low. Shift four weeks earlier and the water is at its warmest of the three, with almost two extra wet days attached and the holiday calendar on top. January is the middle term in both trades, which is the practical reason it suits a trip built around one climb and one swim.
Is January a good time to visit Dunn’s River Falls?
Yes for anyone whose trip turns on water temperature and a dependable daytime range: 82.2°F in the sea, 81.4°F in the air, six wet days out of thirty-one. No for a traveler who wants the driest possible fortnight, and no for anyone who cannot book flexibly, since 2.99 inches is a full inch more than the month that follows.
If dryness is the priority, take February. It brings 1.95 inches over 5.2 wet days and the warmest average high of the three at 82.3°F, and it charges you 1.0°F of sea temperature for the privilege. That trade is worth making for a hiking-heavy week inland and less so for a trip whose center is a swim at the bottom of a waterfall.
What January alone puts on the table is December’s water, 0.9°F cooler and still at 82.2°F, with December’s rain cut by 1.8 wet days and the holiday weeks behind you.
The last word
Book January if the swim matters more than the dry sky, and February if the reverse is true. One last number for perspective: across December, January and February the sea surface moves a total of 1.9°F, from 83.1°F down to 81.2°F, so the water is close to a constant and the rain column is what actually decides the month. Call the operator for the gate hours before you fix the morning, because that is the one figure we could not read at source.
