Dunn’s River Falls in March: Weather, Sea Temperature and How It Compares to February and April

Climbing a waterfall in a bathing suit is a temperature question before it is anything else. March answers with an average high of 83.3°F, an average low of 71.9°F and sea water at 81.6°F. Measurable rain falls on about seven days out of thirty-one and rarely settles in. On March 15 the sun is up for twelve hours and five minutes, from 6:14 am to 6:19 pm.

What March costs is harder to state. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for Ocho Rios, so we crown no month cheap and no month busy. What we can do is set March beside February and April with one source behind all three columns, then say what four weeks in either direction buys and takes away.

March pairs an 83.3°F afternoon with 81.6°F sea water and about seven wet days, which makes it a reliable month for the climb if you start it in the morning.

Go for: a morning climb in air that has not yet hit its 83.3°F peak, water at 81.6°F for the rest of the day, and a full evening of light after you dry off.

Think twice before: booking a fixed tour slot, since 7.2 days of the month carry measurable rain and a flexible hour moves the climb out of it.

Every figure here comes from ECMWF ERA5 through Open-Meteo, 1991-2020 normals computed for the grid cell at 18.4074N, 77.103W. That cell sits over Ocho Rios, about three kilometers east of the falls, near enough that the same weather reaches both. This is model output for a cell of the atmosphere, and a thermometer at an airport station would read differently, most of all on overnight lows. We say so because the difference is measurable, and you have a right to know which kind of number you are reading.

An average March records 0.10 inch or more on 7.2 days, roughly one day in four. Only 0.3 of a day tops a full inch, so a real soaking arrives about one March in three. The usual shape is a twenty-minute shower and rock that dries fast afterward, which is why the climb is a morning plan and lunch is the weather cushion.

Between the 83.3°F afternoon and the 71.9°F night there are 11.4 degrees, enough to register when you come out of the water toward dusk in wet cotton. A dry shirt and a light layer for the ride back cover it. Water shoes matter more than anything warm, and the rest of the bag is on our Jamaica packing list.

Sunrise on March 15 falls at 11:14 UTC and sunset at 23:19 UTC, which is 6:14 am and 6:19 pm in Jamaican time. Leave the water at four and you still have a little over two hours of light for the drive, a beach walk or dinner outdoors. Nobody needs a headlamp for the last hour of a March day here.

Can you swim in Dunn’s River Falls in March? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea off the falls averages 81.6°F in March. That number is the mean of daily maxima across 2015-2024 from the Open-Meteo Marine API, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Water at 7 am sits below it, water at 3 pm sits close to it, and the monthly figure is the warm end of the day rather than its middle.

At 81.6°F you walk in without the shock and stay in as long as you like, children included. The freshwater coming down the falls is a separate question, and we could not find a temperature reading for it. River water off the hills generally runs cooler than the sea, and we cannot tell you by how many degrees, so treat the first step into the cascade as colder than the beach.

We found no wind or wave series for this stretch of the north coast in March, so we make no claim about swell or surface chop. The precipitation record is what we do hold: 2.76 inches across the month, with 0.3 day of it heavy. Conditions in the storm months are a different calendar, and the hurricane-season page carries it.

How busy is Dunn’s River Falls in March? Crowds, prices and booking ahead

We hold no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for Ocho Rios, so we place March nowhere in a price ranking and name no month the cheapest, the priciest or the most crowded. Jamaica’s demand calendar follows northern school breaks and winter flights, and we measured none of that. Our best-time page handles the country-wide view.

Without a rate series we will not invent a booking window in weeks. Two moves hold regardless of the date. Fix your transfer before you land, because the falls sit well east of Montego Bay and the curb is a poor place to negotiate a two-hour drive. Ask your hotel whether its shuttle stops at the falls at all. Prices and drive times are on airport transfers and getting around Jamaica.

We could not verify Jamaica’s accommodation tax rate, nor whether it is charged per room or per night, so we give no percentage. Ask for the all-in total when you book, then read the tax line on the confirmation before you accept it. Our broader budget page, what a Jamaica trip costs, is the place for the rest of the arithmetic.

The one upgrade our own numbers support is control of the clock. With rain on 7.2 days and sunset at 6:19 pm, a car or a private driver lets you move the climb to the dry half of a day, while a fixed coach slot cannot be moved at all. That flexibility changes a March visit more than a better room does. If you plan to drive yourself, read driving in Jamaica first.

Things to do at Dunn’s River Falls in March: the climb, the beach and Ocho Rios

March gives you both halves of a day. The climb is done in full sun, and 83.3°F is two degrees kinder than April’s 85.3°F for exactly that kind of effort, with the same rain frequency behind it. The beach at the foot of the cascade is still usable at five, because the water holds 81.6°F long after the air starts dropping toward its 71.9°F overnight low.

The falls stand about three kilometers west of Ocho Rios, close enough that the town’s weather is the falls’ weather. Call the operator the week you travel for the current admission price, opening hours, and any closing day. The town, its beaches and its boat trips are covered in our Ocho Rios guide, with the island shortlist on things to do in Jamaica.

Fresh water off the hillside barely notices the calendar. The air around it does: 82.3°F in February, 83.3°F in March, 85.3°F in April. The sea moves far less, from 81.2°F to 81.6°F to 82.5°F. What you feel stepping out of the cascade is the distance between the two, and it runs 1.1 degrees in February, 1.7 in March and 2.8 in April.

We could not verify any free-admission day, festival or dated event at the falls in March, so we name none. What March hands over at no charge is light: twelve hours and five minutes of it on the 15th, with the sun still on the water at six o’clock and a beach hour after the climb that costs nothing but the walk down.

Dunn’s River Falls in March: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts at the gate as it opens, an hour we could not confirm, so check it the night before. Climb early, while the air is still nearer the 71.9°F overnight figure than the 83.3°F afternoon. Dry off, eat in Ocho Rios, and leave the middle of the day loose in case one of the seven wet days lands on you. Back in the water around four, out by half past five, sunset at 6:19 pm.

Day two belongs to the coast road, at whatever pace the sky allows. If rain arrives, it is usually short work: only 0.3 day in an average March tops an inch, and an hour under cloud is better spent driving than waiting in a parking lot. Keep the second swim for the afternoon, when the sea is closest to the 81.6°F daily maximum our marine data reports.

Dunn’s River Falls in March vs February and April

February March April
Average high 82.3°F 83.3°F 85.3°F
Average low 71.6°F 71.9°F 73.3°F
Precipitation 1.95 in 2.76 in 2.69 in
Days at 0.10 in or more 5.2 7.2 7.3
Sea surface 81.2°F 81.6°F 82.5°F

February runs 82.3°F by day and 71.6°F at night, with 1.95 inches of rain over 5.2 wet days and a sea at 81.2°F. March adds a degree of afternoon heat, 0.81 inch of rain and two more wet days. April pushes the high to 85.3°F and the night to 73.3°F, keeps the rain almost where March has it at 2.69 inches over 7.3 days, and warms the water to 82.5°F.

Shift four weeks earlier and you give up 1.0 degree of daytime warmth and 0.4 degree of sea to gain two drier days. Shift four weeks later and the water is 0.9 degree warmer under a climb that is two degrees hotter, with no improvement in rain frequency. Anyone who burns fast should look hard at that 85.3°F April high. Anyone chasing the driest of the three should book February.

Is March a good time to visit Dunn’s River Falls?

For most travelers, yes. An 83.3°F day and 81.6°F water need no compromise, and 7.2 wet days out of thirty-one leave three dry days in four. The case against is narrow and specific: if your dates are locked, your tour slot is fixed and you have only one shot at the climb, two extra wet days over February are a real risk rather than a rounding error.

If that describes you, take February. It is the driest of the three months at 1.95 inches over 5.2 days, its sea sits only 0.4 degree behind March at 81.2°F, and the trade is one degree of afternoon warmth. The full month is on our February page.

March is the only one of the three months that gets within a degree of April’s water without April’s sun: 81.6°F sea under an 83.3°F high.

The last word

Book March for the morning climb and the long evening that follows it, and accept that about seven days of the month will hand you a shower. One number we have not used yet argues the same way: April nights average 73.3°F against March’s 71.9, and those 1.4 degrees show up at three in the morning in a room with a tired fan. Before you fix the date, call the operator for the opening hour and the admission price, the two figures we could not pin down.
