Corfu in March: Weather, Greek Independence Day, Clean Monday and What to Eat

In March, the arcades of the Liston in Corfu Town fill with people lingering over coffee, and on Greek Independence Day the streets turn to blue-and-white flags and school parades. The island’s cooking is still in its winter register, with slow stews bubbling in kitchens and a glass of tsitsibeera, the local ginger beer, in hand. It is a month for the old town, the fortress, the road to the Achilleion and long meals, with the sea still a matter of a quick dip.

What is the weather like in Corfu in March?

March in Corfu is cool and changeable: mild enough to sightsee outdoors in layers, wet enough that rain gear earns its place in the bag.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Daylight on the 15th Sea (°F)
February 57.0 44.6 4.81 11.1 10 h 39 min 60.5
March 61.0 47.7 4.38 11.1 11 h 50 min 60.4
April 66.4 52.2 3.02 9.7 13 h 12 min 63.4

At Aktion, on the mainland coast south-east of Corfu, highs average in the low 60s, which is a comfortable temperature for walking the old town and climbing to viewpoints, and lows sit in the upper 40s. Pack a sweater and a light waterproof jacket rather than a heavy coat. The sun is out long enough to burn faces on clear days, so sun protection belongs in the bag even in a cool month.

A rain jacket and shoes with a decent grip on polished old-town stone are more useful than an umbrella. Plan the outdoor sights flexibly, and keep a table or a café in mind for when a downpour arrives.

Days are close to twelve hours long by the middle of the month, which gives a real evening on the Spianada and the waterfront. The extra daylight is the biggest change from February. The sea is cold enough that swimming is a short affair.

Can you swim in Corfu in March?

A quick dip is the right way to think of it, because the sea around Corfu sits in the low 60s in March, which is bracing. People will find a swim here is a brief, invigorating plunge rather than a long float.

The island’s beach and boat outings are better treated as scenery at this time of year. The national road EO24 runs west from Corfu Town toward Palaiokastritsa, and the EO25 heads south toward the Achilleion, with a loop at its end. Both are drives that reward a stop whatever the water temperature.

Ferries leave Corfu for Gaios on the island of Paxoi, for Igoumenitsa and for Sarande in Albania, and some services run as far as Patras. For anyone set on getting into the water in March, a short plunge is as far as it goes, and a wool sweater on the shore afterward is the better plan.

What to do in Corfu in March

The big date of the month is March 25, Greek Independence Day, when the country commemorates the start of the War of Independence. Corfu marks it like everywhere else in Greece, with flags on the balconies, school parades and wreaths laid by local officials.

It is a public holiday, so expect a festive streetscape and closed shops. Every Sunday of the year is also a public holiday under Greek law, which shapes the rhythm of the week.

The other great Greek date of the season is Clean Monday, the first day of Orthodox Lent. In 2027 it falls on March 15, and Western Easter lands on March 28 the same year.

Clean Monday is a day for picnics, flat unleavened bread and kites, and it comes right after Carnival, the weeks of parades, street parties and costumes that lead up to Lent. Traditionally, the butter, milk and other animal products in the larder were used up during Shrovetide.

The Old Town and the Old Fortress

The Old Town of Corfu has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007, and it rewards slow wandering through narrow lanes, past Venetian-looking facades and tiny squares where laundry hangs overhead. Its arcaded Liston, along the edge of the Spianada, is the place for coffee and for ordering tsitsibeera, which can be had at the Liston and at better restaurants and coffee houses.

The Old Fortress is a Venetian fortress in the city itself and gives the town its skyline. Keep rubber-soled shoes on, since stone gets slick when wet.

The Achilleion and the island roads

The EO25 runs south from the city toward the Achilleion, a palace with a panoramic view over Corfu Town to the north and the southern part of the island, framed by the Ionian Sea to the east. On a clear March day the view is a good reason to make the trip, and on a gray one the palace rooms and gardens give you something to do.

For walkers, the Corfu Trail is a long-distance footpath covering the full length of the island, well signed, with a book to accompany it. March is a fine time to sample a stretch of it in a rain jacket.

What to eat: pastitsada, sofrito and bourdeto

Corfu’s table carries a Venetian accent, and cool, damp March is the right month for its slow dishes. Pastitsada is a stew of beef, rooster or rabbit in a rich, spiced tomato sauce served over bucatini. Sofrito is thinly sliced beef, slow-cooked in a garlicky white wine and vinegar sauce and served with mashed potatoes or rice.

Bourdeto is the fiery one, a fish stew made with scorpionfish or another white fish in a tomato, red pepper and garlic sauce. To go with all this, tsitsibeera, the local ginger beer, is the island’s own drink. The Corfu Microbrewery in Arillas, in the north of the island, makes craft beer for a different kind of toast.

Getting around is simple to describe: blue buses serve Corfu Town and its environs, and green buses serve the rest of the island. The blue bus terminal sits in San Rocco Square. Between the buses, the two national roads and the ferries, the island is reachable without much fuss.

A two-day itinerary for Corfu in March

Day 1 belongs to Corfu Town. Start in the Old Town, wandering the lanes and squares before the day gets going, then head toward the Old Fortress for its views over the water.

Lunch is a good moment for a taverna serving pastitsada or sofrito, which suit the cool air of March. The afternoon is for the Liston, where a tsitsibeera under the arcades makes a pleasant pause, and then the Spianada for a stroll as the evening settles in.

Days are close to twelve hours long, so there is real light for all of this. For the evening, a small restaurant in the old streets with bourdeto on the menu rounds out the day. If rain sets in, stay under the arcades or in a café, and turn the afternoon into a long, slow meal.

Day 2 goes out to the island. Take the EO25 south toward the Achilleion, where the panoramic view takes in the city to the north and the southern part of the island. If the sky is clear, the Ionian Sea frames the scene to the east, and it is a good spot for photographs. Lunch is a roadside or village taverna, where a fish stew is a fine choice.

In the afternoon, turn toward the EO24 and Palaiokastritsa for the drive west, or sample a stretch of the Corfu Trail if the weather holds. Return to town in time for dinner. On a wet day, the palace and the town’s cafés give you indoor options, and without much fuss.

Is Corfu busy in March?

March is a month of local life in Corfu, shaped more by holidays and the rhythm of the Orthodox calendar than by a rush of visitors. The days that bring people into the streets are Greek Independence Day on March 25 and, in 2027, Clean Monday on March 15, when families head outdoors for picnics and kite flying.

Because every Sunday is a public holiday in Greece, the island has a quieter, family-centered feel at weekends, with long lunches in the tavernas. Ferries continue to link Corfu with Paxoi, Igoumenitsa, Sarande and Patras, which keeps the island connected to the mainland and its neighbors.

In practice, March gives you the old town as locals live it, with Carnival’s tail end, Lenten tables and flags on March 25 setting the tone. For the pace of a trip, plan around the holidays and let the weather decide the rest.

What to pack for Corfu in March

Rain falls on a good share of the days, and the air is cool, so layers and waterproofs make up most of the bag.

  • A light waterproof jacket, because rain falls on many March days.
  • A sweater or two for layering under the jacket in cool air.
  • Shoes with a good grip for wet old-town stone and the trail.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses, since the sun is out on clear days.
  • A small daypack for the Achilleion or a stretch of the Corfu Trail.
  • A swimsuit only for a quick dip in a sea in the low 60s.

Good to know before you go

March days are wet and cool, so keep the plan flexible and leave room for cafés and long meals. March 25 is a public holiday, and every Sunday is one too, so shops and some services may be closed on those days. In 2027, Clean Monday falls on March 15, and Western Easter on March 28. Orthodox Easter comes later, on May 2, 2027.

Blue bus tickets in Corfu are for a single journey and must be validated on board. They can be bought from machines or from the driver for €0.50 more.

Corfu in March vs February and April

Going four weeks earlier brings a cooler, rainier Corfu with shorter days. February sits closer to Carnival, with parades and costumes, and the sea is about as cold as in March. Days are noticeably shorter, so there is less light for outdoor sights and the evening comes early.

Going four weeks later brings warmer air, fewer rainy days and longer daylight, with the sea gaining a few degrees. April’s calendar turns toward Holy Week, and in 2027 Good Friday falls on April 30 with Orthodox Easter on May 2, so the end of the month belongs to the Easter rituals. Outdoor plans, from the Corfu Trail to the drive toward Palaiokastritsa, get easier as the weather settles.

Travelers who want Independence Day parades, Clean Monday picnics and Lenten tables should stay with March. Those after warmer walking weather and more daylight should lean toward April, and those who want Carnival should aim for February.

Is March a good time to visit Corfu?

Yes, for anyone who comes for food, old streets and holidays rather than for the beach. It is less suited to anyone planning on long swims or days of steady sun.

On arrival, start in the Old Town and the Liston, where a tsitsibeera and a walk to the Old Fortress set the pace of the island. From there, the EO25 to the Achilleion and the EO24 toward Palaiokastritsa open up the countryside. What is special about March in Corfu is the mix of Independence Day flags, Clean Monday kites and the Venetian-accented stews of pastitsada, sofrito and bourdeto, all set in an Old Town recognized by UNESCO.
