Corfu in April: Weather, Sea Temperature, Orthodox Easter and Things to Do

In April, the Old Town of Corfu smells of lemon blossom and of lamb being prepared long before the Easter table is set. Brass bands rehearse in the lanes, and church doors stand open as the spring rituals of Holy Week get closer. The island is green after the winter rains, the sea is still cool, and the days are lengthening. It is a month for walking, eating and watching a Greek spring unfold.

What is the weather like in Corfu in April?

April is mild and changeable: At Aktion, on the mainland coast south-east of Corfu, highs average in the mid-60s, which is comfortable for walking and sightseeing, with some rain still in the mix.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Daylight on the 15th Sea (°F)
March 61.0 47.7 4.38 11.1 11 h 50 min 60.4
April 66.4 52.2 3.02 9.7 13 h 12 min 63.4
May 73.9 59.0 2.00 7.1 14 h 20 min 68.1

Rain has not gone away. Roughly one day in three brings a measurable amount, so a light waterproof jacket earns its place in the bag. Wet days are fewer than in March, and the island’s greenery, the olive groves and the hillsides above the sea, is the reward for them.

The air is warm enough for lunch on a terrace in the sun, but the lows call for a sweater or light jacket once you sit outside after dinner. Sun protection is still worth packing, since days of light stretch well into the evening and a long walk through the Old Town can leave you with more sun than you expected.

The daylight now runs past the hour when most people sit down to dinner, which stretches the walking day. The sea is cool, a fact that matters if you plan to swim, and it warms noticeably by the following month.

Can you swim in Corfu in April?

The sea near Corfu is bracing in April, at about 63°F, so a quick dip is realistic and a long swim is for the hardy.

Think of April as the month for the shoreline rather than the water itself. Many visitors spend the time walking along the coast, sitting at a seaside café with a coffee, and getting their feet wet at most. Swimsuits are worth packing if you like the idea of a brief plunge, though a towel and a warm layer for afterward will matter more than a snorkel mask.

Boat outings are also part of the island’s habits. Day trips to Paxi are widely available from Corfu, and a day on the water in spring is as much about the view of the coast from the deck as about anything you do in the sea. Corfu is also described as a good start for a tour of the Western Greek Islands, a plan that suits later months better, when the water has warmed.

What to do in Corfu in April

The big event of the month is Orthodox Easter, whenever it falls. Easter Sunday for Eastern Orthodox Christians lands somewhere between April 4 and May 8 in the Gregorian calendar, so some years the whole of Holy Week is in April and other years it spills into early May.

In 2027, Good Friday falls on April 30 and Easter Sunday on May 2, which puts Holy Week at the very end of April. Western Easter that year falls on March 28, so the two calendars sit a month apart.

Corfu’s Easter has its own character. On Good Friday, processions carry the Epitaphios (the flower-covered bier of Christ) through the streets of the Old Town, accompanied by the island’s philharmonic bands.

On Holy Saturday morning, people in the Old Town throw large clay pots from balconies and windows so that they smash on the street, a custom islanders link to the welcoming of spring and the Resurrection. At midnight, bells ring, candles are lit and fireworks go off. Easter Sunday itself is spent around long tables with lamb on the spit, and with tsoureki, the sweet braided bread baked with red-dyed eggs.

Outside Easter, April belongs to the Old Town, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007. This is the place to wander without a plan: arcaded streets near the Liston, the tight lanes with laundry strung overhead, the fortresses at the water’s edge, and the green sweep of the Spianada. Every Sunday in Greece is a public holiday, and in a town like this that means long family lunches in the squares and cafés full of people lingering over coffee.

Eating in Corfu in spring

Corfu’s kitchen has a Venetian streak that shows in dishes you will not find on every Greek menu. Pastitsada, a spiced stew of meat or rooster over thick pasta, and sofrito, thin slices of veal in garlic and white wine, are the island’s signature plates. Bourdeto, a peppery fish stew, is another. Kumquat liqueur and sweets are sold in shops around the Old Town.

Around Easter, the table changes. Lamb, whether grilled over coals or slow-cooked, takes over, and bakeries fill their windows with tsoureki and holiday cookies. A tavern meal in April, with a plate of local olives, bread and a jug of house wine, works in either direction: it is a good way to settle in after a morning of walking, or to warm up on a cooler evening.

Mount Pantokrator and Old Perithia

Mount Pantokrator is the highest point on Corfu, a mountain whose slopes look over the island and the coast. A spring outing there trades the sea for green hillsides, and the wide views are part of the attraction. Cool air on the heights is worth a layer.

Old Perithia is the last remaining Heritage Protected Village on Corfu, in a Designated Area of Natural Beauty. Stone houses stand among the hills in a place that feels far from the beach towns. Only a few mountain villages are left where you can slip away from tourists and be mainly among the Greeks, and this is one of the places to understand what that means. Time here can also fold in a taverna lunch.

A day trip to Paxi is the other outing that many visitors add. The island is widely served from Corfu, and an April crossing suits travelers who like to be on the water without needing to swim.

A two-day itinerary for Corfu in April

Day 1 is for the Old Town. Start with coffee and a pastry on a corner of the Spianada, then walk into the lanes and let yourself get lost between the Liston arcades, the churches and the fortresses by the water.

Lunch fits a taverna in a square, with pastitsada or sofrito. In the afternoon, climb to the old fortress for the view over the rooftops and the sea, then return for a slow aperitif as the evening light lasts.

For dinner, try a small restaurant in the back streets, where bourdeto or grilled fish suit a cool spring night. If the day turns wet, swap the fortress for cafés and covered arcades, and linger over a long lunch. The rain fits well with the town.

Day 2 leaves town. Head toward Mount Pantokrator in the morning, take in the views and drive on to Old Perithia for lunch in a village taverna. In the afternoon, return along the coast and stop at a seaside café, where you can put your feet in the water if the weather allows. Finish with dinner back in town and a stroll along the waterfront.

If you would rather spend the second day on the water, a trip to Paxi replaces the mountain loop. For a wet day, keep to the village lunch and the Old Town cafés, or spend extra time browsing shops with kumquat sweets and local olive oil.

Is Corfu busy in April?

April is a spring month on an island whose summer season has not yet started, so the pace feels more local than in July or August.

Corfu has a tradition in tourism of at least 130 years, and the island is used to visitors. The long departure lines at Corfu International Airport belong to the summer season, when the terminal, which dates from the 1970s, is stretched.

In April, the main thing that shapes the mood in town is Easter. When Holy Week falls in April, the streets of the Old Town fill with families, processions and onlookers, and the island has a festive air.

Ferries also connect the island with Venice, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi in Italy, Himara and Saranda in Albania, and Igoumenitsa and Patras on the Greek mainland. Whether you arrive by sea or air, April tends to be the month before the island is fully geared up for summer.

Corfu is not the place to go if you look for an authentic Greek experience, because of the massive influence of tourism. In April, the mountain villages and the Old Town on an ordinary weekday are where the island’s daily life is easiest to see.

What to pack for Corfu in April

Pack for a mix of mild sunshine, cooler evenings and the chance of rain, with comfortable shoes for cobbled streets.

  • A light waterproof jacket, since some days in April bring rain.
  • A sweater or fleece for evenings and the heights of Mount Pantokrator.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the Old Town’s cobbled lanes.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses for the longer days.
  • A swimsuit and towel if you want a brief dip in cool water.
  • A small day bag for a village lunch or a boat outing.

Good to know before you go

Orthodox Easter shapes the month. Because the date moves, check where Holy Week falls in your year, and expect the days around it to feel different from ordinary ones. Every Sunday in Greece is a public holiday, so Sundays in town are given over to family meals and slow cafés. Rain is part of April, so keep an indoor option in mind for each day.

Corfu in April vs March and May

Moving four weeks earlier brings a cooler sea, more rain and shorter days. March is cooler still, with more wet days, and the island feels more like the end of winter than a spring escape. Western Easter can fall in March, which only matters if your plans depend on it.

Moving four weeks later brings warmer water, fewer wet days and long daylight, with the sea close to what many swimmers want.

Travelers who want the Old Town without much rain, and a sea they might only dip into, can choose April. Those set on swimming or beach days will be happier in May, while March suits people who care more about green hills and cool walking weather than the sea.

Is April a good time to visit Corfu?

Yes, for travelers who want the Old Town, mountain villages and spring colors more than a beach holiday.

April rewards walkers, food lovers and anyone curious about Orthodox Easter. If you are set on long swims or a lazy beach week, another month will serve you better, since the sea is still cool. A light rain jacket and flexible plans handle the weather.

On arrival, start in the Old Town on foot, with a coffee on the Spianada and a first plate of pastitsada. What makes April distinct here is the mix of spring green, Easter rituals and a town still waiting for its summer crowds.
