Corfu in February: Weather, Carnival Season, Sea Temperature and What to Do

In February, rain drums on the arcades of the Liston while waiters inside the cafés carry out small cups of coffee and plates of fried pastries. Orange and kumquat trees hang heavy with fruit in the gardens, and the island’s cooking leans toward slow pots and baked pies. Corfu in February is a winter island of old streets, museums, a palace and long lunches, for travelers who would rather wander than lie on a beach.

What is the weather like in Corfu in February?

February in Corfu is cool and damp, with rain on a good share of the days and a sun that is returning but still low. At Aktion, on the mainland coast south-east of Corfu, highs average in the upper 50s and lows in the mid-40s, so you need a coat but not heavy winter gear.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Daylight on the 15th Sea (°F)
January 55.8 44.1 5.06 11.3 9 h 39 min 62.0
February 57.0 44.6 4.81 11.1 10 h 39 min 60.5
March 61.0 47.7 4.38 11.1 11 h 50 min 60.4

Rain is the main fact of the month. On roughly one day in three you will see wet pavement, so a waterproof jacket matters more than an umbrella you have to fight with on narrow lanes. The island is green because of it, and the olive groves and gardens look their freshest.

Daylight is growing fast after January. The days are about an hour longer than a month earlier, which gives you a real stretch of the day for sightseeing outdoors. Layers make sense: a sweater under a rain shell lets you sit in a café, then step out again.

The sea is cool in February and not for lingering. Sun protection still belongs in the bag on the clearer days, because winter light on water and stone is stronger than it looks.

Can you swim in Corfu in February?

Only for a bracing dip, since the sea near Corfu averages 60.5°F in February. That is cool enough that people will content themselves with looking at the water, and a quick plunge is the most you should expect to enjoy.

The island’s package resorts sit on the north, east and southwest coasts, and the southern resort of Kavos provides tourist facilities. Those are the stretches of coast that grew up around beach holidays, so they are where the island’s swimming story lives in summer. In February, the coast is better as a place to walk and look.

A swimsuit is optional in the suitcase, a good towel perhaps worth it if you are the kind who likes a winter swim. For everyone else, February swimming is a story to bring back from a summer visit. The sea does not disappear from the trip, though. It frames the Old Town and the coast roads, and it is the view from most café tables on the waterfront.

What to do in Corfu in February

The big event of the season is Carnival, the weeks of costumes, parades and street parties that lead up to Clean Monday, the first day of Orthodox Lent. Its timing follows Easter, so it moves from year to year.

In 2027 Clean Monday falls on March 15, which puts the final carnival weekend in March, while February carries the early run-up. Carnival celebrations typically include parades, street parties and entertainment with a touch of the circus.

The season also shapes the table. Carnival is tied to a tradition of using up butter, milk and other animal products before Lent, which is why meat, cheese and rich pies feature in these weeks. Shops and cafés often show it in their windows, and it is a good month to eat the dishes that suit cold weather.

The Old Town and its museums

February is a good moment for the Old Town, because most of what you do there is indoors or under cover. The Liston arcade and the open Spianada square beside it are the natural place to start, and a coffee under the arches is a fine way to wait out a shower.

The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays a relief of Dionysus Bacchus among its collection. The Ionian Academy, founded by the French during their administration of the island as the département of Corcyre, was the first academic institution of modern Greece, and its building has been fully restored after the WWII bombings. Both give you a reason to go in out of the weather.

The Achilleion

The Achilleion is the palace Elisabeth of Bavaria, Empress of Austria, known as Sissi, built on Corfu as a summer residence. Wilhelm II of Germany bought it after her death. Walking through its halls and gardens is a way to spend a winter day among stories of European royalty rather than among sunbathers.

The gardens look best in the green that February rain leaves behind, and the terraces give you a long look at the landscape. A rain jacket and shoes with grip are the sensible pairing for a visit.

Stories, villages and the table

Corfu is rich in stories. Jason and Medea are said to have married on the island in Medea’s Cave, as Apollonius of Rhodes tells it in the Argonautica, and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born here. These make good company for a drive along the coast or a long café afternoon.

At the table, winter on Corfu means pastitsada (pasta with slow-cooked meat in a spiced tomato sauce), sofrito (veal in garlic and white wine), bourdeto (fish in a peppery sauce) and baked cheese pies. Kumquat liqueur and the island’s ginger beer, tzitzibira, are local drinks to look for. Tavernas in the villages tend to serve what the season gives them, and a wood fire or a hot dish suits the rain.

A two-day itinerary for Corfu in February

Day 1 belongs to the Old Town, because most of it can be done with a roof overhead when the rain arrives. Start with coffee under the Liston arcade, then cross to the Spianada for a look at the open square and the sea beyond.

Spend the middle of the day at the Archaeological Museum with its Dionysus relief, then find a taverna for pastitsada or sofrito. In the afternoon, step into the Ionian Academy building for its story of the first academic institution of modern Greece. Finish with a slow walk through the lanes as the lights come on, and dinner of baked pies or fish in bourdeto.

Day 2 goes to the Achilleion, the summer palace Sissi built and Wilhelm II later bought. Reach it in the morning and keep the garden walk for whenever the rain eases. Lunch can be at a village taverna near the palace, where a hot dish and a glass of local wine suit the season.

If the weather turns for the whole day, the rain card is a long café morning, a second look at the museum, and an evening with a glass of kumquat liqueur. Daylight is limited, so you want the outdoor stops done while it lasts, then everything else indoors by the time it fades.

Is Corfu busy in February?

February is winter on the island, and the pace is set by the weather rather than by a tide of visitors. The north-east coast, developed largely by a few British holiday companies with large, expensive villas, and the package resorts on the north, east and southwest coasts are the summer story of Corfu. February belongs to a different island.

What you meet in town are Carnival preparations, the rhythm of daily life and the cafés and tavernas that serve people who live here. The Old Town, with its museums and arcades, suits the rainy days that make up so much of the month, and the Achilleion fits a day when the clouds lift.

Because the weather leads, plan around the forecast rather than the calendar. Keep your outdoor stops flexible, keep indoor options in reserve, and let the long lunches fill the gaps.

What to pack for Corfu in February

Pack for cool, damp days and for plenty of walking on old stone streets and garden paths.

  • A waterproof jacket, because rain falls on many days of the month.
  • Sweaters and layers, since highs stay in the 50s.
  • Shoes with good grip for wet stone in the Old Town and the palace gardens.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for the clearer days on the water.
  • A swimsuit and quick-dry towel, only if you plan a bracing dip.
  • A small day bag that fits a wet umbrella or jacket in a café.

Good to know before you go

Rain is the constant of the month, so plan each day with an indoor alternative. Carnival season matters too, since its date follows Easter. In 2027 Clean Monday falls on March 15, Good Friday on April 30 and Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday on May 2, so February sits well before the Easter weeks.

Corfu in February vs January and March

Going four weeks earlier, to January, gets you the shortest days of the winter and a sea a touch warmer than in February. Rain falls on about as many days, and the daylight is an hour shorter, so the sightseeing day is tighter. It is the same island with a little less light.

Going four weeks later, to March, brings the mildest air of the three months and nearly twelve hours of daylight in mid-month. The sea is about the same as in February. In 2027 the final carnival weekend and Clean Monday land in March, so that trip catches the end of the festivities rather than the run-up.

Choose January if the quiet and the lowest light suit you, February for the balance of lengthening days and carnival atmosphere, and March for more daylight and a warmer feel while still catching Carnival’s close in 2027. Nobody should come in any of the three months expecting beach days.

Is February a good time to visit Corfu?

It is a poor choice for anyone planning beach days, since the sea stays cool and the weather is changeable.

February rewards people who plan around the sky. Those who come for the mood of the island in the cold season, rather than for the sand, will find plenty to do.

On arrival, start with a coffee under the Liston and let the weather show you which of your plans to do first. What sets the month apart is the carnival run-up, the kumquat and the pies, and an island with its summer villas and resorts waiting in the background.
