MIAMI · AUGUST · THE MONTH GUIDE
Miami in August suits travelers who like their water warm and their plans flexible. The official average high at Miami International Airport is 90.7°F, and the sea off the coast averages 88.3°F at its daily peak. Through all of it the city keeps its doors open: the Art Deco blocks behind Lummus Park, the bayfront gardens of Vizcaya and the free Thursday evenings at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) all run on their usual schedules.
August also falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center dates it from June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. That shapes how you book more than whether you go. Guides relaying hotel-market data place Miami’s lowest rates between August and October and the highest between February and April. Their source flags this as a market trend without official statistics behind it, but it points the same way for a long weekend or a four-night vacation.

Most August trips start at Miami International (MIA), about 12 miles from South Beach and a 20 to 45 minute drive depending on traffic. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL) sits about 25 miles out, 35 to 50 minutes on I-95, and is worth pricing for the same weekend. Both drive times are indicative, so leave a margin. Without a car, Route 150, the Miami Beach Airport Express, leaves the airport Metrorail station for Mid Beach roughly every 30 minutes from about 5 a.m. to midnight, for $2.25 with luggage racks aboard. Our Florida flights guide compares the airports, and getting around Florida covers the wider transit map.

Every air-temperature and rain figure here comes from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information: the 1991–2020 official normals for station USW00012839, a real thermometer at Miami International Airport. A gridded reanalysis such as ERA5 averages a whole cell of land and sea and can differ from a station reading, so we use the station. At the airport an average August day peaks at 90.7°F and bottoms out at 77.7°F, with 9.58 inches of rain over the month. South Beach lies about 12 miles from that gauge, so read these as mainland figures.
Measurable rain, meaning 0.10 inch or more, falls on 13.3 days of an average August, a little under every other day. A downpour of an inch or more lands on 2.9 days, about one day in ten. Summer rain in Miami typically arrives as afternoon thunderstorms, so put the beach and any long walk in the morning, and keep an indoor stop such as a museum or a late lunch ready for mid-afternoon.
Day and night sit just 13 degrees apart, 90.7°F against 77.7°F, and summer humidity runs between 85 and 90 percent. Pack for heat around the clock: linen or quick-dry clothes, a spare shirt for the afternoon, sandals that can take a soaked sidewalk, and a compact umbrella. One light layer still helps in air-conditioned museums, restaurants and on the flight home.
On August 15 Miami gets about 13 hours 04 minutes of daylight, according to sunrise-sunset.org. The sun rises at 6:52 a.m. and sets at 7:57 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Swimmers who start at 7 a.m. get the lowest sun of the day, and a dinner booked for 8 p.m. begins just after dark.
Can you swim in Miami in August? Sea temperature
Yes. Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Miami at 88.3°F in August, averaged over 2015 to 2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so a 24-hour average would come out a shade cooler. Tables built on a different method may give a lower August number.
At 88.3°F the Atlantic runs only about 2.4 degrees below the average afternoon high of 90.7°F on land. Stepping in brings no cold shock and little cooling, and a long swim at midday can tire you faster than you expect. Lummus Park, the beach fronting Ocean Drive between 5th and 15th Streets, has lifeguards on duty. Swim near a stand, and leave the water at the first thunder.
We could not verify wind or swell data for August, so we give no wave forecast. What NOAA does publish is the storm calendar: most Atlantic hurricane activity falls between mid-August and mid-October, and a tropical system offshore can change sea conditions within days. Check the National Hurricane Center before a beach day and follow the lifeguards’ flags. Our Florida safety guide covers storm preparation in full.
How busy is Miami in August? Crowds and prices
On Miami’s calendar August is low season. The warm, dry stretch runs from December to April, roughly 65°F to 80°F, and guides relaying hotel-market data put the lowest rates between August and October. That source describes a market trend, not an official statistic. We found no occupancy series, so we put no crowd percentage on the month.
We found no booking-window data for August either, so we give no rule in weeks. The hurricane calendar is the better guide to how you book: choose refundable rooms or free cancellation, note each deadline, and prefer a flight you can change. Budget ranges for the whole trip are in our Florida trip cost guide.
Miami-Dade County levies a 6.0% transient rental tax, filed and paid together with the 6% Florida sales tax, according to the Florida Department of Revenue. Those two lines add 12% to the room rate. We could not verify whether other local charges stack on top in every municipality, so we give no all-in figure. Many Miami Beach hotels also add a nightly resort fee. Published amounts diverge widely, from about $25 on average to $35 to $95 depending on the property, so compare totals before you book.
Paying more for location makes the biggest difference in August. A room within walking distance of the sand lets you swim at dawn and retreat indoors by late morning without a car. It also spares you parking fees: the South Pointe Park lot charges a $20 flat day rate on weekends. The free Miami Beach trolley runs five routes from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., about every 20 minutes. Where to stay in Florida compares the bases.
Things to do in Miami in August

August’s big advantage is the water. Off Miami it averages 88.3°F at its daily peak, while through the winter it sits around 72°F, with sources split between about 72°F and 76°F for January. The two figures use different methods, but the gap is wide either way. In August you can stay in the water for an hour at dawn without a second thought.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens stands in north Coconut Grove, inside the City of Miami, overlooking Biscayne Bay. It opens Wednesday to Monday at 9:30 a.m., takes last admission at 4:30 p.m. and closes on Tuesdays. Adults pay $20 while restoration work is underway, down from the usual $25. Children 6 to 12 pay $5 and under-6s enter free. On Key Biscayne, Crandon Park charges $7 to park on weekdays and $10 at weekends. Lummus Park is free and open 24 hours, with restrooms and picnic tables.
The places stay the same all year, but August changes when to visit them. Vizcaya’s gardens are outdoors, so arrive for the 9:30 a.m. opening, when the air is closest to the 77.7°F overnight low, and move inside before the afternoon storm window. At the beaches the water barely changes through the day, so the choice comes down to the air. Swim before 10 a.m. and come back after 6 p.m.
PAMM is free from 5 to 9 p.m. every Thursday. On August 15 that window opens almost three hours before the 7:57 p.m. sunset and runs about an hour past it. The museum is also free all day on the second Saturday of the month, with art-making from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. South Pointe Park costs nothing to enter, and its lot starts at $2 an hour on weekdays. The Metromover is free across Downtown and Brickell, and things to do in Florida covers the rest of the state.
Miami in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one, Miami Beach. Be at Lummus Park by 7 a.m., shortly after the 6:52 a.m. sunrise, and swim near a lifeguard stand while the sun is low. By 11 a.m., head for shade or air conditioning, since the 90.7°F average high and the storm risk both belong to the afternoon. From 8 a.m. the free trolley runs the South Beach loops about every 20 minutes, so use it for lunch and a rest at the hotel. Around 6 p.m., walk to South Pointe Park for the last two hours of light before the 7:57 p.m. sunset, then book dinner for after dark.
Day two, the mainland, on any day but Tuesday. Ride Metrorail to Vizcaya station, a few minutes’ walk from the gate, for the 9:30 a.m. opening, and finish the gardens before noon. Each ride is $2.25. Continue north to Downtown and switch to the free Metromover around Downtown and Brickell. If it is a Thursday, end at PAMM, free from 5 to 9 p.m. If a storm settles over the city in the morning, swap the gardens for the museum and give Vizcaya the next dry morning. If a tropical system is forecast, check the National Hurricane Center and your airline before anything else.
Miami in August vs July and September
| Normal | July | August | September |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 90.6°F | 90.7°F | 89.0°F |
| Average low | 77.5°F | 77.7°F | 76.9°F |
| Precipitation | 7.36 in | 9.58 in | 10.22 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.1 | 13.3 | 13.1 |
| Sea surface (daily max) | 88.2°F | 88.3°F | 87.8°F |
| Hurricane season | Inside | Inside, busiest stretch starts mid-month | Inside, peak on Sept 10 |
At the Miami International station the average high barely moves: 90.6°F in July, 90.7°F in August and 89.0°F in September. Rain makes the difference. July collects 7.36 inches over 11.1 measurable-rain days, and August climbs to 9.58 inches over 13.3 days. September has the most rain of the three at 10.22 inches, spread over 13.1 days, slightly fewer than August. The sea stays within half a degree across all three months: 88.2°F, 88.3°F and 87.8°F.
Moving four weeks earlier to Miami in July gets you 2.22 fewer inches of rain, 2.2 fewer rain days, and a trip home before the mid-August start of the busiest hurricane stretch. You give up the August-to-October low-rate window. Moving four weeks later to Miami in September takes 1.7°F off the high and 0.8°F off the low. In exchange you get the season’s September 10 peak and 0.64 inch more rain.
Is August a good time to visit Miami?
Yes, if your trip is built around water and museums, your dates can move, and you want low-season rates: couples on a long weekend and swimmers do well here. No, if you want full outdoor days, reliable sun, or a vacation you cannot rebook. With measurable rain on 13.3 days and the busiest hurricane stretch starting mid-month, August rewards travelers who plan around the weather.
If the answer is no, aim for December through April, Miami’s warm, dry window at roughly 65°F to 80°F. The rain gap is stark: January averages 1.83 inches at the Miami International gauge, against 10.51 in June, the wettest month of the year. Our best time to visit Florida guide sets the whole state’s calendar.
Against July and September, August pairs the warmest sea of the three, 88.3°F, with the opening of the August-to-October low-rate window.
The last word
The decision that shapes an August trip is made at booking: take the refundable room, fly on dates you can move, and give every morning to the water. After that, Miami costs less to get around than most visitors expect. Miami-Dade caps fares at $5.65 a day for unlimited Metrorail and Metrobus, less than a single weekday of parking at Crandon Park. Remember too that Miami Beach, with 82,890 residents at the 2020 census, is its own city, across Biscayne Bay from the 442,241 of the City of Miami.
