Dry Tortugas in October: Weather, Rain Days and Sea Temperature

Seventy miles of open Gulf separate Key West from Garden Key, and no road crosses them. You arrive by boat or seaplane at a brick fort on a scrap of sand, with nothing between you and the weather. That makes the date you pick matter more here than almost anywhere in Florida, and October is a month of transition.

The summer heat is easing, the water is still warm enough for long snorkels, and the rain count is falling but has not yet collapsed. October also sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season, so a trip this month is a trip with a backup plan. Everything that does not change with the calendar, from getting there to where to sleep, lives in our Dry Tortugas guide.

October gives you sea water near 84°F and fewer rain days than September, as long as your crossing date can move if the Gulf turns rough.

Go for: snorkeling in water barely cooler than the afternoon air, and a fort you can walk before the midday heat.

Think twice before: booking a single fixed crossing with no spare day, since the islands sit exposed in open Gulf during hurricane season.

A word on where the thermometer stands. Every figure here for air and rain comes from NOAA’s official 1991-2020 normals for Key West, measured at station USW00012836, seventy miles east of the fort. Dry Tortugas has no normals of its own that we could read. It sits alone in open Gulf, windier than Key West and fully exposed, so treat the numbers below as the nearest real measurement, not a reading taken on Garden Key.

NOAA NCEI’s official normals for the Key West station put an average October day at a high of 85.8°F and a low of 76.8°F, with 5.67 inches of rain across the month. These are station normals, recorded by a real thermometer over thirty years, not a reanalysis model’s estimate for a grid cell. They describe Key West, and the fort’s open-water setting can run breezier.

Measurable rain, at least a tenth of an inch, falls on 7.6 days in an average October. Spread over 31 days, that is roughly one day in four. For a single crossing, the odds favor a dry day, but a wet one is common enough to plan around: pack a light rain shell for the boat deck and keep your phone in a dry bag.

Only 9°F separates the average high from the average low, so evenings stay warm and a sweater is dead weight. What the bag needs instead is sun protection, since there is little shade on Garden Key outside the fort’s casemates. Add a thin long-sleeved layer for the ride back, when wind and spray on an open deck feel cooler than the numbers suggest.

On October 15 the sun rises at 7:24 am and sets at 7:01 pm Eastern Daylight Time, for about 11 hours 37 minutes of daylight. For a day trip out of Key West, that means an early crossing in good morning light and a return near or after sunset, depending on the operator’s schedule.

Can you swim in Dry Tortugas in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Yes. The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the sea surface off Dry Tortugas at 84.2°F in October, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest point of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Other water tables may quote a slightly lower number, and both can be right.

In practice, the water sits just 1.6°F below the average afternoon high on land. Most swimmers wade in without the gasp of cold water and can snorkel for a long stretch without a wetsuit. A thin rash guard helps more with sun on your back than with warmth.

Our sources carry no wind or wave figures for October, so we give none. What NOAA’s note does tell us is that the islands are windier than Key West and have nothing to shelter them from weather. Choppy water can cloud visibility near shore and make the crossing rough, so check the marine forecast the evening before you sail.

How busy is Dry Tortugas in October? Crowds and prices

October falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 (our Florida overview has the NOAA dates). That is a calendar fact. We found no visitor counts or fare series for the islands by month, so we do not rank October as cheap or quiet against the rest of the year.

We could not verify how many weeks ahead boats and seaplanes fill in October. Seats to the fort are limited by the size of the vessels, so book as soon as your dates are firm and confirm directly with the operator. Our Key West guide covers the departure point.

Most visitors sleep in Key West before and after the crossing. We could not verify the lodging-tax rate charged there in October, so we give no percentage. Ask for the full nightly total, taxes and fees included, before you commit to a room.

Flexibility is the one line where spending more changes an October trip. A refundable or changeable crossing, paired with a room you can extend by a night, lets you slide a day if the Gulf turns rough. Our Florida trip-cost guide helps set the rest of the budget.

Things to do in Dry Tortugas in October

October lets you snorkel in water still near summer warmth while the rain count drops from September’s 10.2 days to 7.6. You get the warm sea without the wettest weeks, and a full hour more of air comfort than September, when afternoons average 89.0°F.

Fort Jefferson covers most of Garden Key, and walking its brick galleries and upper walls takes a good part of a morning. The moat wall outside the fort is the classic snorkel, with coral and fish along the old masonry in water averaging 84.2°F. Garden Key’s beaches give easy entry from the sand. Check with the park or your operator about an entry fee for October.

The water barely moves between these months compared with how you feel on land. In September the sea sits 0.7°F below the average high, so the air offers little relief. By November the water at 81.2°F is slightly warmer than the 81.0°F afternoon. October sits in between, and the 1.6°F gap makes both a fort walk and a long swim comfortable.

We could not verify whether any fee-free day falls in October, so we name none. Bringing your own mask, snorkel and fins saves a rental, and whether your operator lends gear on board is worth asking when you book.

Dry Tortugas in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one, the crossing. Be at the Key West dock early, with the sun rising at 7:24 am. On arrival, walk Fort Jefferson first while the air is cooler, and save the moat-wall snorkel for early afternoon, when the air nears its 85.8°F high and the 84.2°F water feels best. Eat, rest in the casemate shade, then swim once more off the beach before the return boat. You land back in Key West around the 7:01 pm sunset, depending on the operator.

Day two, the buffer. If the crossing ran on schedule, spend the day in Key West, and our Key West guide has the options. If the boat was canceled or the forecast looked rough, day two becomes your crossing day and you run the same plan. With 7.6 rain days in an average October, a spare day turns one bad forecast into a delay instead of a lost trip.

Best month to visit Dry Tortugas: September vs October vs November

Normal September October November
Average high 89.0°F 85.8°F 81.0°F
Average low 79.2°F 76.8°F 72.2°F
Precipitation 7.24 in 5.67 in 2.05 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 10.2 7.6 3.0
Sea surface (daily maxima) 88.3°F 84.2°F 81.2°F

On NOAA’s Key West normals, the average high falls 3.2°F from September to October and another 4.8°F into November. Rain drops from 7.24 inches to 5.67, then to 2.05, roughly a third of October’s total. Rain days go from 10.2 to 7.6 to 3.0. At sea, the Open-Meteo Marine figures show the water cooling 4.1°F into October and 3.0°F more into November.

Moving four weeks earlier, to September, gets you water at 88.3°F but hotter afternoons and 2.6 more rain days. Moving four weeks later, to November, cuts rain days to 3.0 and cools the air, while the sea drops to 81.2°F, still swimmable for most people without a wetsuit.

Is October a good time to visit Dry Tortugas?

Yes, for snorkelers and swimmers who put warm water first and can hold a spare day in Key West. No, for travelers with one fixed date and no room to move, or anyone who wants the best odds of a dry crossing, because October still averages 7.6 days of measurable rain.

If that second profile fits you, choose November. Its 3.0 rain days and 2.05 inches of rain give the steadiest weather of the three months, and water at 81.2°F still makes for a good snorkel. Our Florida best-time guide sets the rest of the year in context.

October keeps the sea at 84.2°F while the rain count falls from September’s 10.2 days to 7.6.

The last word

The decision that counts in October is the spare day, not the swimsuit. The water will be warm either way. What can end the trip is a single heavy downpour, and the Key West normals show 1.5 days a month with an inch or more of rain. Book the crossing for your first full day, keep the second free, and the fort’s moat wall will very likely be waiting in clear, warm water.
