San Pedro Airport to Your Hotel: Flights, the Ferry and the Water Taxi to Ambergris Caye

The warm, damp air hits you as soon as the arrivals doors slide open, and the island you came for is still out beyond the mainland coast, across the water. Ambergris Caye is a long, narrow strip of sand and mangrove, and San Pedro sits on its southern part. Between the terminal and your hotel there is a short choice to make, by air or by sea, and each way gives you a different first look at the reef.

How do you get from the airport to Ambergris Caye and San Pedro?

Which one suits you depends on how much you want to see on the way and how much time you have after you land.

Ambergris Caye lies off the mainland, so there is no road connecting it to Belize City. Every route is either through the air or across the sea. Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport is in Ladyville, on the mainland, and it is where international flights come in. From there, the island is a hop by plane or a longer trip by boat.

Time of arrival is the first thing to weigh. The airport keeps daytime hours, so a late flight changes what is practical for the rest of your journey. Luggage matters too, since a small plane and a boat each have their own way of handling bags.

If you are traveling with a group, think about whether everyone wants the same crossing. A flight gives you a view of the barrier reef from above, while the ferry puts you on the water, close to the color of the sea.

Travelers who like to ease into the trip often pick the boat, and those who want to be on the beach as soon as possible choose the plane. Neither is wrong. The island itself is the reward at the end of both.

Your options from the airport

Flying from Belize City to the island

A flight from Belize City to Ambergris Caye takes about 20 minutes, which makes it the shortest way across. Maya Island Air and Tropic Air both check in at Terminal 1 of the Goldson airport, the same building where COPA, Sun Country and Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos have their counters.

What you get for those minutes is a window seat over turquoise shallows, pale sandbars and the dark line of the barrier reef, which is the main reason people come to the island. The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest in the world, after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and from the air you can read its shape in the changing colors of the water.

This option suits anyone who wants to reach their hotel with a full afternoon still ahead, or who is tired after a long day of connections. It also suits travelers who would rather skip a long stretch on the water. Those who like to look out the window should sit where they can see the coast.

The SPBE ferry from Belize City

The SPBE ferry runs from Belize City to San Pedro and takes approximately an hour and a half. It is the slow way in, and it is a real part of the trip rather than a stretch to get through. You travel across open water with the mainland shrinking behind you, and the island’s low green outline slowly takes shape ahead.

The ferry suits travelers who enjoy the sea breeze and the sense of crossing from one place to another, and those who are not in a hurry. It gives you time to settle in, look at the map and think about which day you will visit the reef. San Pedro is the main town on the island, so you arrive straight into the place where most of the boats, restaurants and dive shops are.

Water taxis and the Saca Chispas terminal

If your trip also includes Caye Caulker, the ferry ride from there to San Pedro takes 30 minutes.

In San Pedro Town, the Saca Chispas Water Taxi Terminal is run by the Belize Border Management Agency and has six berths for small water taxis, tour boats and marine tenders. It also handles cross-border passenger traffic between San Pedro and Chetumal in Quintana Roo, Mexico. So the terminal is both a local landing and a gateway to the north, and you will see travelers with very different plans standing on the same dock.

Airport transfer options compared

Option Starts from Time to San Pedro
Flight Belize City (Maya Island Air and Tropic Air check in at Terminal 1 of the Goldson airport) About 20 minutes
SPBE ferry Belize City Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes
Ferry from Caye Caulker Caye Caulker 30 minutes

The flight wins on time by a wide margin, and it fits best when you arrive and want to be on the island quickly. The ferry from Belize City asks for far more of your day, but it gives you the sea as a first chapter.

Think about what you want from the first hours on the island. If your plan is to dive or snorkel soon, the flight gets you closer to the water sooner. Hol Chan Marine Reserve lies about four miles south of San Pedro, and from town the barrier reef is a 20 minute boat ride, so the reef is never far once you have arrived.

If you are carrying a lot of luggage or traveling with a group that likes to stay together, the ferry keeps everyone on one boat. If you are on your own and light, the plane is simpler. Either way, the time you save or spend is the main difference, and the sea does the rest.

Arriving at the airport

Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport is in Ladyville, in the Belize District, and sits ten miles from downtown Belize City. It has two terminals, and check-in counters for all airlines are in Terminals 1 and 2. Which terminal you use depends on your airline.

Terminal 1 serves COPA, Sun Country, Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos, Maya Island Air and Tropic Air. Terminal 2 serves Air Canada, Alaska Air, American, Delta, Southwest, United and Westjet. If you land on one of the big U.S. carriers and continue by a domestic flight, you will pass from one building’s world to the other.

The airport opens at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 6:00 p.m., and services beyond normal hours are available upon request. Hertz/Safari Belize and Crystal Auto Rental both have desks at the airport, and All in One Travel Service operates there as a travel agency. The runway is 9,900 feet long, built for the large jets that connect Belize to the rest of the Americas.

Roadwork and dredging are underway on the airport access road, which means slower traffic and uneven surfaces. Drivers are asked to reduce speed, follow the flaggers and watch for dredging equipment and workers near the roadway. Anyone driving to the airport should leave extra time. All in One Travel Service can be reached at +(501) 225 – 2016 or +(501) 620 – 2267, and by email at [email protected] or [email protected].

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so a trip in autumn falls inside it. San Pedro is a small town on a narrow island, and its life moves around the sea, so weather and water conditions shape the day more than anything on a calendar.
