Picture a couple at a swim-up bar on Cable Beach, a cold drink in hand, the sound of the surf drifting across the sand while a boat heads out toward a little island just offshore. That scene is the whole idea of Sandals Royal Bahamian, an adults-only, all-inclusive resort on the west side of Nassau. It is the one Sandals resort in the Bahamas, and it suits couples who want one address for the beach, the table and the spa.

What is Sandals Royal Bahamian?
Sandals Royal Bahamian is an all-inclusive, adults-only luxury resort on Cable Beach in Nassau, built specifically for couples. It is the only Sandals resort in the Bahamas, which makes it the single place in the islands where you will find the brand’s particular formula: everything paid for up front, a long list of restaurants, and a private island reached by boat.
The word that matters most is couples. The resort is designed around two people traveling together, and that shapes everything from the way the restaurants are set for dinner to the quiet corners around the pools. If you are picturing a family week with children running between the pools, this is not that place. If you are picturing an anniversary, a honeymoon or simply a week with no decisions to make, it fits.
An all-inclusive formula, adults only
All-inclusive here means you do not open a wallet at every turn. Meals, drinks and even the minibars in the rooms are covered without limit, so the rhythm of a day is easy to picture. Coffee on a terrace, a long beach morning, lunch wherever you happen to be, an afternoon drink in the water, then dinner somewhere with a tablecloth.
Because the guests are all adults, the mood tends toward the relaxed and the romantic rather than the busy. Evenings are for dressing a little and choosing a restaurant. Mornings are slow. You can fill a day with activities or do almost nothing at all, and neither choice feels out of place.
Rooms, swim-up suites and villas
Rooms come in several categories, and a few of them change the stay quite a bit. Swim-up rooms put you steps from the water, so you can slip from your terrace straight into a pool. At the top of that range, the highest level of swim-up rooms includes Elite Butler service and private Rolls Royce airport transfers, which turns the arrival into part of the vacation.
Island Village Villas are the most private option. They offer tropical garden views, a private pool and butler service, and they suit couples who want a romantic escape within the resort rather than a room among many. Guests who book a seven-night stay in certain Butler suites also receive a $250 credit to dine at select restaurants in Nassau, a good reason to leave the property for one evening and see the city’s tables.
The Red Lane Spa
The Red Lane Spa is where the resort leans into its Caribbean-inspired side. Treatments are inspired by Caribbean tradition, and they are optional, so the spa is something you add to a day rather than a charge folded into the stay. Couples often plan one treatment together in the middle of the week, between a beach morning and a late dinner.
A second spa waits on the resort’s private island, which gives the spa a very different feel, away from the main property and closer to the sea. The two settings together mean you can choose between a quick indulgence near your room and a half day set aside for it.
What is included?
Food and drinks are included without limit, along with a long list of things to do: pools, water sports, scuba diving for certified divers and the boat trip to the resort’s private island. The only item described as optional is spa treatment, which sits apart from the package.
Dining and drinks
All food and drinks are included, alcoholic beverages among them, and so are the minibars in the rooms. Unlimited cocktails and premium liquors are part of the same formula, so a second round never involves a bill. The restaurant list is the real draw for many couples. There are ten specialty restaurants, and the cuisines run from classic French to authentic Caribbean.
That range makes planning a week fun. You can eat French one night and Caribbean the next, and keep the more casual meals for the beach. Eight bars are spread around the property, and three of them are swim-up bars, which means a drink can arrive while you stay in the water. A sensible habit is to sample a different restaurant each evening instead of returning to the same table.
Pools, whirlpools and water sports
The water is the center of the resort. There are seven pools, so you can usually choose between a lively spot near a bar and a quieter corner, and five whirlpools for a slower soak at the end of the afternoon. The swim-up rooms and the swim-up bars tie the pools into the rest of the stay.
Beyond the pools, a variety of water sports are included, and certified scuba divers can dive through the resort’s program, with free PADI scuba diving part of the offer. Divers should bring proof of certification in mind when packing. Everyone else can spend the day between sand, pool and a long lunch, with the sea on one side of the property throughout.
Barefoot Cay, the private island
Barefoot Cay is the resort’s private island, reached by a short boat ride from the main property. It has two beaches, a spa and a zen garden, which makes it a change of scene without a real trip. The mood is quieter than the main resort, more about a hammock-and-book day than about swim-up bars.
It suits couples who want to feel they have left the resort even though they are still inside the package. A good plan is to go on a day when you have no dinner reservation worry and nothing on the schedule, spend the hours on one of the beaches, and visit the zen garden for a pause before the boat back.
Where is it?
Sandals Royal Bahamian sits on Cable Beach, on the northern coast of New Providence Island, west of downtown Nassau. Its address is W Bay Street, Nassau, and the resort is approximately ten minutes from Lynden Pindling International Airport, which makes the transfer from the plane to the pool a short one.
Nassau is a city on the island of New Providence, and Cable Beach is one of its resort areas, a stretch of sand lined with hotels. The beach itself runs two and a half miles, so the resort is one address along a long, open shoreline rather than a lone building on a bay.
Cable Beach and its neighbors
Cable Beach is both a beach and a resort district, and the neighbors give it a hotel-row character. Baha Mar, Breezes, Meliá Nassau Beach, the Marley Resort and Spa, Goldwynn Resort and Residences, Ocean West Boutique Hotel, Casuarinas and Westwind Club all sit here, along with Sandals Royal Bahamian. Walking the sand, you pass one property after another.
The district also holds Pompey Market, a name worth knowing if you like to see something local between resort days. Because the resort is all-inclusive, most guests will spend the majority of the stay on the property, and a stroll along the beach or a visit to the market is the natural way to add a little of the neighborhood.
How Cable Beach got its name and its resorts
The name comes from a submarine telegraph cable laid in 1892, linking Jupiter, Florida to Goodman’s Bay. A line under the sea that carried messages gave a beach its name, and the beach later became a place where people came for rest rather than for news.
Tourism here goes back to the 1940s, and by the 1950s the area had become a center for hotel development. The Emerald Beach Hotel, which opened in 1954, was the first air conditioned hotel and opened the largest casino in the Bahamas. Four years later, in 1958, Howard Deering Johnson opened his first venture outside the United States on Cable Beach.
A wave of redevelopment in the late 1980s, including the opening of the Crystal Palace Resort and Casino, led to the area being promoted as the Bahamian Riviera. Sandals Royal Bahamian belongs to that long story, a modern resort on a beach that has been welcoming visitors for generations.
From the airport to the beach
Lynden Pindling International Airport is the gateway for Nassau, and the resort’s position close to it means little time between landing and unpacking. For guests in the top swim-up rooms, the private Rolls Royce transfer makes the first ride part of the stay, a small ceremony before the vacation begins.
Once you are on Cable Beach, the rest of New Providence is not essential to enjoy the stay, though Nassau’s restaurants are an option for guests with the dining credit. Think of the resort as the base and the city as an occasional evening out.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so a trip in those months falls inside it, and a stay planned for December onward falls outside the official season. Because food and drinks are included, you need little spending money on the property, though a few extras such as spa treatments are optional. The Bahamian dollar is the local currency, and the resort is built so most of the stay needs no payment at the table.
