At Atlantis on Paradise Island, children press their faces against the glass of the marine habitat while a ray glides past, and the Royal Towers glow pink over the marina at dusk. A few minutes of Nassau coastline away, Baha Mar spreads along Cable Beach, where the sound is a steady line of palms rustling over sunbeds and cabanas. Both are big, full-service resorts on New Providence, and the choice between them comes down to whether you want a themed adventure park with hotels attached or a polished beachfront resort town.

Which is better, Atlantis or Baha Mar?
Atlantis suits families and anyone who wants water slides, aquariums and a casino within a short walk of the room, while Baha Mar suits couples, golfers and groups who want a long beach, a choice of three very different hotels and a big spread of restaurants. Neither is better in the abstract. They are built around different ideas of a vacation, and the table lays the differences side by side.

Beaches and the sea
Atlantis gives you a beach that sits inside a larger attraction. The waterpark side of the resort has five miles of white sand, and the shoreline is woven into lagoons, pools and the lazy river, so a day on the sand rarely stays only on the sand. Sunbeds, towers rising behind you and the occasional shriek from a slide set the mood. It is a beach with a lot going on around it.
Baha Mar sits on Cable Beach, which stretches two and a half miles along the northern coast of New Providence. The beach is the resort’s front yard, with the Grand Hyatt, SLS and Rosewood each taking a slice of it.
Rosewood keeps its own pools for its guests, SLS has a beach club with private cabanas, and the Grand Hyatt pools are ringed with cabanas too. The feel is quieter and more manicured than at Atlantis, with fewer moving parts between your towel and the horizon.
The island has a long hotel history here. Tourism around Cable Beach goes back to the 1940s, and the Emerald Beach Hotel, which opened in 1954, brought air conditioning and a big casino to this shoreline. The name itself comes from an 1892 submarine telegraph cable that ran from Jupiter, Florida to Goodman’s Bay. Walking the strip today, you are on ground that has been a vacation address for generations.
Who wins depends on what you want a beach to do. If the sand is a part of a bigger day of rides, aquariums and pools, Atlantis wins, because the shoreline is only one of its stages.
If the beach is the point and you want to settle in with a book and a cabana, Baha Mar wins on length and on the sense of a proper beachfront resort. Either way, sea conditions change from day to day, so treat the water as something you find out on arrival rather than something you can count on.
Things to do
Atlantis is the bigger show. Aquaventure is a themed waterpark across the resort’s 154 acres, with slides, river rides and pools, and its signature features are The Current, a lazy river that doubles as a raft ride, and the temple slide tower, which gives the park its silhouette. The daily resort fee brings in Aquaventure, The Dig, the Predator Tunnel and the marine habitat, so a first day can be planned around walking from one to the next.
The marine habitat is the other anchor, with more than 65,000 aquatic animals from 250 species, among them sharks, sawfish and stingrays. The Dig is a maze of passages that plays on the lost-city theme, and Dolphin Cay is a marine conservation and education center where visitors can interact with dolphins in a controlled setting. Day passes for non-guests to reach the waterpark, Dolphin Cay, the habitat, pools and beaches can be booked online, which makes a single big day possible even if you sleep elsewhere on the island.
After dark Atlantis turns to the casino, which links The Royal and The Coral around a 7-acre lagoon. It has 80 gaming tables with blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat and mini-baccarat, and slot machines run around the clock. Cleitos, just off the main floor, offers table gaming in a private or semi-private setting. Around the marina, restaurants and bars carry the evening on for those who prefer a drink to a deal.
Baha Mar spreads its attractions across a resort of 1,000 acres. Baha Bay is its water park, set on 15 beachfront acres right next to the hotels, and guests of all three hotels have unlimited access.
Beyond the water, there is a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, a Racquet Club with pickleball, Mini Blue miniature golf, the ESPA spa, The Sanctuary and a Kid’s Explorers Club. It reads less like one big attraction and more like a menu of things you can mix across a week.
Food and evenings are where Baha Mar leans hardest. More than 45 restaurants, bars and lounges are reachable across the resort, so you can eat somewhere different each night without leaving the property.
The Baha Mar Casino on Cable Beach offers live sports betting by William Hill, which makes game day a reason to stay in. In late October, the Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival takes place at Baha Mar from October 21 to 25, a good moment for anyone who plans a trip around food.
Cable Beach is also home to Pompey Market, a reminder that there is a neighborhood outside the resort gates. A morning there pairs well with an afternoon at Baha Bay, and the same logic works from Atlantis, whose position on Paradise Island puts Nassau Harbour and the town across one of the two bridges.
Weather and the best time to go
Both resorts share one climate, because they sit on the same island of New Providence. The air figures here are Nassau’s, taken from the Nassau Airport station, and they describe Atlantis and Baha Mar equally.
Winter days are warm and comfortable rather than hot, summer days are properly hot and humid, and the sea stays warm enough to enjoy for most of the year. What differs between the two is how each resort handles the weather, not the weather itself.
January is the mild end of the year, with afternoons in the upper 70s and cool evenings that feel good for a walk to dinner. Rain falls on only a few days, usually as a passing shower.
That is a comfortable month for Baha Mar’s golf course and racquet courts, and for walking the length of Cable Beach. At Atlantis, a mild day suits the long walks between the habitat, the marina and the pools.
July is a different trip. Afternoons reach the low 90s, nights stay in the mid-70s and showers come on more than a third of the days, often as a heavy burst in the afternoon followed by sun.
This is the season for waterparks, when Aquaventure and Baha Bay are exactly what the heat calls for, and for long lunches indoors. Both resorts give you plenty of covered places to wait out a downpour, with the casino floors and dining rooms at the ready.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, which covers the summer heat, the early autumn and the stretch up to the end of the cruise-and-resort season. December through May sits outside the official season. Atlantis keeps its biggest holiday stretch from December 18 into early January, a time when the weather is most agreeable and the resort at its busiest.
For a waterpark trip with children, summer heat makes the slides most attractive, though midday is intense. For golf, pickleball and long beach walks, the cooler months from winter into spring are kinder. Culinary travelers may like Baha Mar in late October, when the Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival gives the resort its own calendar.
Getting there and getting around
Both resorts are in the Nassau area of New Providence, so the question is less which island and more which side of town. Atlantis is on Paradise Island, which is linked to New Providence by two bridges crossing Nassau Harbour. The first was built in 1966 and the second in the late 1990s. Baha Mar is on Cable Beach, on the northern coast of New Providence west of Nassau.
Paradise Island once had its own airport, but it closed in 1999 and the airfield and runway have since become an 18-hole golf course. That small piece of history explains why you reach Atlantis over a bridge from the main island rather than by landing next door. You arrive as a traveler to New Providence and cross to the resort from there.
Once you are at Atlantis, movement is mostly on foot between the towers, the marina, the casino and the waterpark, with a resort shuttle included in the daily resort fee. The Cove and The Reef sit as more private options, with The Reef given over to residences, while The Coral and Harborside Resort overlook the marina and its yachts. Each of the five hotels has its own tone, so the choice of tower shapes how far you walk to the water.
At Baha Mar, the layout is a resort of several hotels sharing grounds and amenities. Guests of any of the three have access to the spa, the casino, the golf course and Baha Bay, which sits right beside the resort. The Grand Hyatt is the large, family-leaning hotel, SLS is the design-forward one, and Rosewood is the smallest and the most private. Moving between them is a question of strolling rather than planning.
Staying in one resort and visiting the other is simple because both are on the same island. A day at Atlantis from a Cable Beach room, or an evening at Baha Mar from Paradise Island, is a matter of crossing New Providence.
Who should choose which
Choose Atlantis if the trip is about the kids, or if you simply love a waterpark. Families with children of different ages tend to appreciate a place where the slides, the aquariums and the dolphin center are all included in the same stay.
It also suits groups that want a casino at their doorstep, travelers who like the energy of a big themed resort, and anyone who wants to wander from a tower lobby to a marina in the same evening. The choice of five hotels also lets you pick your level, from the white-glove service promised at The Cove to the nautical style of Harborside Resort.
Choose Baha Mar if you want the resort to be a place to unwind rather than a show. Couples, golfers, pickleball players and travelers who like to eat somewhere new every night will find a lot to do here, and the three hotels let you decide how large or how quiet you want your base to be. The Grand Hyatt is for families, friends or a romantic getaway, SLS is for those who want a stylish room with floor-to-ceiling windows, and Rosewood is for those who want a smaller, more private stay with its own pools and spa.
Combining them works well because both sit on New Providence. Spend the first days at one resort for its pace, then shift to the other and use the day pass option at Atlantis or a visit to Baha Bay to taste what you missed. A split stay lets children get their waterpark fill and adults get their long beach and a quiet dinner, without anyone feeling shortchanged.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.
Atlantis opened in December 1998 and Baha Mar opened in April 2017, so the first has a long track record and the second feels newer in its design. Atlantis is owned by Brookfield Asset Management and operated by Marriott’s Autograph Collection Hotels. Baha Mar is owned by Hong Kong-based Chow Tai Fook Enterprises.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, which is worth remembering when you choose your dates. At either resort, the usual city habits apply in Nassau when you go beyond the grounds: keep valuables out of sight and stay aware of your surroundings.
