Skagway Shore Excursions: White Pass Rail, the Chilkoot Trail and Self-Guided History

Skagway answers with a mix of rail, road, trail and old buildings. You can ride the White Pass and Yukon Route, join a commercial tour, or simply walk the historic district on your own.

What shore excursions are there in Skagway?

The town’s visitor bureau says plainly that you can explore on your own without a guide, and that a variety of commercial tours are also available. That gives you two basic styles of day: a booked outing with someone else handling the route, or a loose walk through a gold rush town at your own pace.

Most of what is worth seeing is tied to the Klondike gold rush story, and the excursions simply approach it from different angles. Some put you on a train climbing toward the pass, some put you in a seat at a theater, and some leave you on foot among restored buildings. None of them requires you to be a history expert, only curious about how the town came to exist.

The National Park Service in town

The National Park Visitor Center sits in the restored 1898 rail depot at 2nd and Broadway, and it is the natural first stop for a day on foot. Inside, the theater shows the park film Gold Fever: Race to the Klondike, which runs 24 minutes, a compact introduction to the rush that built the place. The park also offers a multi-media presentation of the Skagway story for history buffs.

Ranger chats are offered daily, and the topics vary, so ask at the visitor center what is on. The park no longer offers any ranger-led walking tours, so do not plan around one.

In their place there is a self-guided walking tour of park buildings in the Skagway Historic District, .64 mile long. The free NPS App, available for iOS and Android, can be downloaded for the tour, which makes it easy to read about each building as you stand in front of it.

Theater: Robert Service and Soapy Smith

Skagway has two stage shows that fit a rainy hour or a quiet afternoon. Theatrical renditions of the ballads of Robert Service are performed in town and are described as suitable for the whole family. Service wrote the rolling, dramatic verse of the northern gold fields, and hearing it performed suits a place where the stories still hang in the air.

The second is a full-scale stage show about Soapy Smith’s short but fiery reign over Skagway. It is the lively, slightly rascally counterpart to the park film, telling the story through performance rather than archival images. Together the two shows give you a lighter way to take in the town’s past, and they pair well with a morning on the self-guided walk.

The Chilkoot Trail

The Chilkoot Trail is a 33-mile trail running from Dyea, Alaska, to Bennett, British Columbia. It begins in Dyea, a ghost town and campground located 15 minutes from Skagway. It is a backpacking route, not a casual outing, and it appears here because its trailhead is so close to town and because travelers often ask about it.

The official hiking season, when rangers are on duty and the trail crew is on site, usually begins in late May and ends in early September. Peak demand runs from June through August.

The National Park Service and Parks Canada allow no more than 50 backpackers to begin the trail each day by way of a permit system, and camping is allowed only in the nine designated, maintained campgrounds. That makes it a trip for people planning a multi-day hike, not a stop between ship times.

Which are by rail, which by road?

The rail excursion is the White Pass and Yukon Route, and the road-based and on-foot options are the commercial tours, the town walk and the trip to Dyea. The railroad is the one big, bookable outing with a track of its own, while everything else works from the streets and roads around Skagway.

By rail: the White Pass and Yukon Route

The White Pass and Yukon Route is a narrow-gauge railroad linking the port of Skagway with Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon. Its original length from Skagway to Whitehorse was 107 miles. Today the active track runs 67.5 miles from Skagway to Carcross, so the full original line is no longer what you ride.

The route was reopened between Skagway and White Pass in 1988 purely for tourist passenger traffic, which explains its character: it is a heritage railway built around the view and the history. Passenger service from Skagway to Carcross began in May 2007 with six trains per week and motorcoach return trips. The railroad resumed operations in May 2023 after being suspended in July 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the summit excursion, the railway is accepting 2026 excursion bookings. That is the only season and booking statement the railroad’s facts give, so confirm which departures fit your port day with the operator itself.

By road and on foot

Commercial tours in Skagway come in a variety, and the town’s visitor bureau lists them alongside the option of going without a guide. The trip to Dyea, 15 minutes from Skagway, is the road outing tied to the Chilkoot Trail, where you find the ghost town and the campground at the trailhead.

Closer in, the town itself is the on-foot excursion. The self-guided walking tour of park buildings is .64 mile long and starts naturally at the depot visitor center.

Option Type What it covers
White Pass and Yukon Route Rail Active track of 67.5 miles from Skagway to Carcross
Commercial tours Guided A variety of tours in and around Skagway
Historic District walking tour On foot, self-guided .64 mile of park buildings, with the free NPS App
Chilkoot Trail from Dyea On foot, permit required 33 miles to Bennett, British Columbia

What should you know before you book?

Know which kind of day you want, because the choices are quite different: a rail ride, a guided tour, a self-guided walk or a multi-day trail.

If you want the train

The White Pass and Yukon Route is accepting 2026 excursion bookings for its summit excursion. The line is a heritage railway running 67.5 miles of active track to Carcross, so the experience is a scenic, historic ride, not a trip to the old terminus at Whitehorse.

Since the railroad resumed operations in May 2023 after a pause that began in July 2020, it is running as a long-established part of the Skagway visit. Because motorcoach return trips were part of the Carcross service from the start, a journey there can combine rail and road.

If you want to walk on your own

The park no longer offers any ranger-led walking tours, so the on-foot option is the self-guided one. Download the free NPS App before you set out so the tour is ready on your phone. The walk is .64 mile long and passes park buildings in the Skagway Historic District.

Pair it with a stop at the visitor center in the old depot. Ranger chats are daily, with varying topics, and the film is 24 minutes, so you can fit both around the walk.

If you are thinking about the Chilkoot Trail

This is the one option with real limits. No more than 50 backpackers may begin the trail each day, through a permit system run by the National Park Service and Parks Canada. Camping is allowed only in the nine designated, maintained campgrounds, and the official season usually runs from late May to early September.

Because peak demand runs from June through August, those are the months when the permit limit matters most. The trail covers 33 miles from Dyea to Bennett, so it is a backpacking commitment, not a port-day outing.

Good to know before you go

Skagway rewards a flexible plan. The two stage shows, the park film and the daily ranger chats give you indoor options if the day turns gray, and the self-guided walk costs nothing but time since the NPS App is free. Match the train and any commercial tour to the time you have in town, keep the Chilkoot Trail for a trip built around it, and leave room to wander the historic district between the bigger plans.
