Portugal in November: Weather, São Martinho and Off-Season City Prices

By the second week of November, the chestnut carts on Portuguese street corners are doing steadier business than any ice cream counter managed in July. São Martinho falls on the 11th, the year’s new wine gets poured while it is still cloudy, and the country moves indoors: dining rooms, port lodges, tile collections, lunches that run to three. Rain comes with all of it, ten days of it in Lisbon and thirteen in Porto, and the national crowd drops to 42% of the August peak.

Where to go in Portugal in November: which regions still work

Lisbon & the center: 62°F days and 10 rain days

Afternoons settle at 62°F, nights at 54°F, and ten days of the month see rain, most of it in bands that clear by lunch. The clock changes the shape of a day more than the sky does: sunset moves from 5:37pm on the 1st to 5:16pm on the 30th, so the viewpoint hour arrives before dinner rather than after it. The Algarve: 65°F, 7 rain days, empty sand

The south keeps its own weather: 65°F by day, 57°F at night, seven rainy days on 72 mm, the driest column in the table below. Nobody swims for pleasure at 64°F, but the cliff paths above Lagos and Carvoeiro are at their best in low light, and the fishing towns are cooking for their neighbors again rather than for a queue. Porto, the Douro & the North: 166 mm and the port lodges

Plan around one number up here: 166 mm across thirteen wet days, roughly double Lisbon’s total, with days at 60°F and nights down at 49°F. Porto absorbs weather better than most cities, since the port houses across the river in Gaia are indoor by design and granite looks better wet. The Alentejo: cork oaks, Évora wine bars, cold nights

The plains turn green after the first rains, the cork oaks stand in dark wet earth, and Évora’s wine bars pour without a wait. Interior nights run colder than the coast (est.), making this a fleece-and-boots month rather than a terrace one. Distances out here are long and buses thin, so it is car country: licence paperwork and toll systems are covered in the rental rulebook. São Martinho, chestnuts and the cellar season

November 11. The saint’s day is fixed and the ritual around it barely shifts: chestnuts roasted over coals, a magusto bonfire in the square, and the year’s wine poured while it is still cloudy and sweet. Lisbon and Porto handle it on street corners with paper cones and a lot of smoke. Northern villages do it at full scale, and you will smell it on your coat two days later.

The indoor half of the country. This is the month it earns its keep: Gaia’s tasting rooms opposite Porto, Lisbon’s tile and modern-art collections, Coimbra’s baroque university library, and the covered markets that solve lunch and the weather at once. November trades away the beach and two hours of daylight and hands back the food, the wine and the space. Buy a cone of chestnuts from the cart on the corner, eat them walking, and get to a viewpoint by 5:15pm, because that is when the sun leaves. Then find a dining room with fogged windows in the north, or a cliff path in the south at 65°F, and let the forecast decide which one you booked.
