Warm Mineral Springs in May: Weather, Crowds and the 84.6°F Water

The spring keeps its own calendar. On September 11, 2026 the USGS gauge in the pool (station 02299260) read 84.6°F (29.2°C), and it reads close to that on any date you pick, because a spring has no seasons. The air above it does. In May the nearest official thermometer averages 87.5°F in the afternoon, so for a few weeks the sky is warmer than the water. That gap of 2.9°F is what separates a May visit from an April one.

May is also the last full month before the Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1, and the last one before the rain turns daily: 2.58 inches in an average May against 7.05 inches in June, 3.8 wet days against 9.0. Florida’s dry season runs November through April, as our statewide calendar lays out, so May is the handover. You pay for it in heat and you are paid back in light, 13 hours 32 minutes of it on May 15.

Think twice before: booking anything that leaves you outdoors from noon to four, because the normal high is 87.5°F and climbs to 90.0°F in June.

Every figure here that describes the air comes from NOAA’s 1991–2020 monthly normals for station USW00012871 at Sarasota Bradenton airport, roughly 27 miles (44 km) from the spring. That is a real thermometer with a thirty-year record behind it, not a modeled grid cell, and it is the closest official one available. The water figure is measured at the spring itself.

NOAA’s normal for May is 87.5°F by day, 68.2°F at night, 2.58 inches of rain across the month. Those are thirty-year averages from the airport station, and no official station sits at the spring, so we cannot tell you how much the air in that hollow differs from the runway. Treat the numbers as the regional signal they are. The water, measured on site, needs no such caution.

Measurable rain falls on 3.8 days in an average May, about one day in eight. Only 0.7 of those days brings an inch or more, so roughly seven Mays in ten deliver a single genuinely wet day and the rest of the month is showers you can sit out with your shoulders under water. June works differently, on a near-daily afternoon storm pattern that pushes the month to 9.0 wet days.

Day and night are 19.3°F apart. A 68.2°F dawn is pleasant in a T-shirt and cool coming out of the water, so a light layer and a towel you can actually dry matter more than a jacket. Sun protection carries the afternoon: hat, shirt, high-SPF, and shade for the middle hours. A packable shell covers that one soaker day, and nothing heavier is worth the suitcase space.

On May 15 the sun is up at 6:39 a.m. and down at 8:11 p.m. local time, 13 hours 32 minutes of daylight. Swimming light therefore runs well past dinner, which reshapes a weekend: you can drive in after work on a Friday and still get an hour in the pool. Nobody has to choose between the water and the evening meal in May.

How warm is Warm Mineral Springs in May, day and night?

The month averages 87.5°F at its warmest and 68.2°F at its coolest, a spread of 19.3°F. June compresses that to 16.4°F by lifting the nights to 73.6°F, and April opens it slightly wider, 19.8°F, with 62.7°F nights. May is the last month here where the night still does real cooling work.

In practice that means two wardrobes in one day. At 7 a.m. you want long sleeves for the ten minutes between the car and the water. By 1 p.m., with the air near its 87.5°F normal, the only comfortable options are shade, air conditioning or the 84.6°F pool. Plan errands, the grocery run and the drive for that block, and keep the outdoor hours at either end.

Our normals carry no frost-day count for May, and with a normal low of 68.2°F, cold is not a question anyone here has to ask. The comparison runs the other way: the 84.6°F water sits 2.9°F below a normal May afternoon, and stepping in feels like relief rather than a plunge.

How busy is Warm Mineral Springs in May? Crowds and prices

May falls on the far side of Florida’s busiest stretch. The state’s dry season, and its visitor peak, runs November through April, with March spring break as the loudest week of the lot. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate figures for this corner of Sarasota County, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. The calendar we can date: May starts after spring break and finishes before the summer school holidays.

For a weekend, that puts your competition for a bed on the Gulf beaches rather than at the spring. Book refundable if your dates sit in the last week of the month, since the Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1 and flights into that window are worth keeping flexible. We could not verify booking lead times for this area, so any “reserve six weeks ahead” figure you read elsewhere is somebody’s estimate, not a measurement.

We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for the county either, so no percentage appears here. What holds across Florida is that the posted room rate is not the rate you pay: state sales tax and a county tourist-development tax both land on the bill, and resort fees and parking sit on top at the larger properties. Our cost guide walks through those layers.

One line item genuinely changes the month, and it is the rental car. The thermometer feeding these normals sits about 27 miles away in a straight line, which is a real drive by road, and every midday hour in May is an argument for working air conditioning and a short hop back to the room. Getting around Florida covers the toll transponder question before you sign anything.

Things to do in Warm Mineral Springs in May

May buys you long, dry swimming days that June cannot match. With 2.58 inches spread over 3.8 wet days, an afternoon plan rarely dies of weather, and the sun holds until 8:11 p.m. Four weeks later the same plan faces 7.05 inches and 9.0 wet days. Those are the swimming weeks you get without gambling on the storm clock.

The spring is the destination and it is a small one: a warm pool fed by a vent pushing 8 cubic feet of water per second, which is why the water stays clear rather than clouding. Fees and opening hours are the gap in our file. The state parks site returned a 403 to automated reads on September 11, 2026, so we publish no entry price and no opening time. Call ahead. Beach days pair well from here, starting with Siesta Key.

What May changes is the contrast, not the pool. In April the afternoon air, at 82.5°F, runs 2.1°F cooler than the water, so the spring warms you. In May the 87.5°F air is 2.9°F above it, and the same pool now cools you. By June, with 90.0°F days, the difference reaches 5.4°F and the water becomes the only shade that works.

On the free column we have less than we would like. No free-entry day was verifiable, and no manatee count for this spring either, since the state wildlife agency’s manatee pages render client-side and our reads came back empty. What costs nothing in May is the daylight: 13 hours 32 minutes on the 15th, with the last two of them soft enough for a walk.

Warm Mineral Springs in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Be at the water by 7 a.m., twenty minutes after the 6:39 sunrise, with the air still near its 68.2°F low and the 84.6°F pool feeling like a hot bath by comparison. Swim until 10:30, then surrender the middle of the day to shade or air conditioning while the thermometer walks toward 87.5°F. Back for a second swim at 5, dinner at 7, and there is still light at 8.

Day two takes the car to the coast for a beach morning and comes back inland for the evening dip, a shape that suits a two-night stay. If the sky turns, remember the odds: one inch-day arrives in roughly seven Mays out of ten. Rain alone does not end a spring swim, since the water holds 84.6°F wet or dry. Thunder does, and getting out is not negotiable.

Warm Mineral Springs in May vs April and June

April May June
Average high 82.5°F 87.5°F 90.0°F
Average low 62.7°F 68.2°F 73.6°F
Rainfall 2.46 in 2.58 in 7.05 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 3.0 3.8 9.0
Afternoon air vs the 84.6°F water 2.1°F cooler 2.9°F warmer 5.4°F warmer

Between April and May the air gains 5.0°F by day and 5.5°F by night while the rain barely moves, up 0.12 inch and less than one extra wet day. Between May and June the rain does all the moving: 4.47 inches more, 5.2 more wet days, for just 2.5°F of extra heat. The water sits at 84.6°F through all three months and settles the argument by staying still.

Shift four weeks earlier and you gain cooler afternoons and nights down at 62.7°F, and you lose the late light and the warm-air swimming. Shift four weeks later and you gain nothing but heat: June nights at 73.6°F never let the house cool, and nearly one day in three carries measurable rain. Late May is the edge of the good side of that trade.

Is May a good time to visit Warm Mineral Springs?

Yes, for anyone whose trip is built around the water. Swimmers, floaters and people who want a warm soak followed by a warm evening get the best version of the place in May, with rain on fewer than four days in the month. No, for anyone planning long walks, a bike day or a midday hike anywhere nearby. At 87.5°F, the afternoon is not a hiking window.

If that is you, move to April. Highs of 82.5°F, 3.0 wet days and nights at 62.7°F make outdoor hours workable all day, and the spring is still 84.6°F when you finish. The trade is daylight and warmth in the evening, both of which May holds. Our April page runs the same figures for that month.

No other month pairs 2.58 inches of rain with a sunset at 8:11 p.m. and a start date ahead of June 1, which is why May reads as the last easy month of the Florida spring.

The last word

Book two nights, swim at 7 a.m. and again at 5 p.m., and give the hours in between to anything with a roof. One more thing worth knowing about the water you are floating in: Florida law reserves a category called Outstanding Florida Springs, defined in Statute 373.802(5) as every historic first-magnitude spring identified by the Florida Geological Survey plus six more named by hand in the text. Protection on that scale is not handed out to ordinary swimming holes.
