SINTRA · APRIL · PENA PALACE
Pena’s towers do their trick in any weather, but April decides what you see them through. The month’s normals, measured down on the coastal plain at Lisbon’s airport, run to an average high of 67.8°F, an average low of 53.2°F and 2.50 inches of rain across 7.7 wet days. Up on the Sintra ridge, add mist, add wind, and add the possibility that the famous red and yellow vanish into cloud for an hour before coming back.
So the April question is not whether the palace is worth it. It is whether these four weeks buy you more than the four before or the four after. Daylight helps the case: 13 hours 17 minutes on April 15, with the sun still up at 20:14, and that leaves a long evening down in Sintra town.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · PENA PALACE · APRIL
April at Pena is mild, green and genuinely showery: go up on the first entry you can book, carry a shell, and keep the painted rooms as the plan for the wet hour.
AVG HIGH 67.8°F · 7.7 WET DAYS · 13 H 17 MIN OF DAYLIGHT ON APRIL 15
Go for: the park in full spring growth, a climb you can make at 67.8°F without sweating through a shirt, and evenings in Sintra town that still have light in them.
Think twice before: building the trip around the postcard view from the High Cross, since cloud sits on the ridge on a fair share of April’s 7.7 wet days.

Trains from Lisbon, the bus up the hill, ticket types and the order of the rooms belong to our Pena Palace guide and to the Sintra guide, and April changes none of them. What the date changes is the temperature you walk in, the odds of cloud on the High Cross, and how much evening is left at the bottom of the hill.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, publishes the 1991-2020 April normals used throughout: average high 67.8°F (19.9°C), average low 53.2°F (11.8°C), 2.50 inches of rain. They come from station 579, Lisboa Gago Coutinho, a real thermometer at 103.9 meters (341 feet), not a model grid cell. That station also sits about 25 km (15 miles) from Sintra and roughly 400 meters lower, out on the coastal plain, while Pena stands up in the cloud the hill makes. Read every figure here as a touch too warm, too dry and too clear for the ridge.
An average April records measurable rain on 7.7 days at IPMA’s 1 mm threshold (0.04 inch), roughly one day in four. Of those, 2.1 bring 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more, a proper soaking twice in the month. American tables usually count days above 0.10 inch and come out lower for the same weather, so the two sets do not swap. The monthly total stays modest at 2.50 inches, which points to showers passing through rather than a gray week, and the hill catches more of them than the airport does.
Between the 53.2°F low and the 67.8°F high sits 14.6°F of daily swing, and wind on the ridge widens what that feels like. A fleece for the first hour, a shell that sheds rain rather than beads it, and a shirt you are happy to walk in by two o’clock will cover the whole day. Trousers dry slowly in April air up there. Our Portugal packing guide has the rest of the list, shoes for wet cobbles included.
April 15 brings 13 hours 17 minutes of daylight, sunrise at 06:57 and sunset at 20:14 local time. We could not verify this season’s opening hours on the hill, so take those from Parques de Sintra when you book. What the daylight buys either way is an evening: finish the park, come down, and you are still ordering dinner in Sintra town with light in the sky.
How warm is Pena Palace in April?
Two figures anchor the month: 67.8°F for the average afternoon high, 53.2°F for the average pre-dawn low, 14.6°F apart. Both are airport readings taken 400 meters below the palace. Four hundred meters higher, in the mist that half of Pena’s photographs are made of, the afternoon runs cooler than the normal suggests and the morning takes longer to warm up.
Dress it as two different days. At the first bus or the first climb, 53.2°F plus damp air plus a breeze argues for a warm layer with a hood. By mid-afternoon, sun through, the same walk through the park runs closer to 67.8°F and the fleece lives in the bag. Pack one mid-weight jacket and nothing else, and you spend the morning cold and the afternoon carrying it.
Frost is not the April problem on this hill. We found no count of freezing nights at station 579 for the month, so we give none, and with a 53.2°F average low on the plain the risk up top reads as damp and wind rather than ice. We also found no verified sea-surface series for the coast below Sintra, so no water temperature appears in our figures. Where you meet one for Portugal, read the small print: many published sea numbers are averages of daily maxima, which read warmer than a true 24-hour mean.
How busy is Pena Palace in April? Crowds, prices and booking ahead
On price we have to be upfront: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Sintra, so we crown no month expensive and name no bargain month either. What can be said is calendar-plain. April is a spring month at a monument that takes the Lisbon day-trip flow all year, and 7.7 wet days mean a decent share of visitors arrive in shower weather and head for the same painted rooms at the same time.
Fix the date, then buy the entry online rather than at the hill. We could not verify this year’s ticket price, the timed-slot rules or whether April slots run out, so those answers come from Parques de Sintra and not from us. Our Pena Palace guide carries the ticket types and the ways up, and the Sintra guide covers the rest of the hill.
We could not verify a municipal lodging-tax rate for Sintra, so we give no percentage and no per-night figure. If one applies to your stay, it shows at checkout rather than inside the advertised room rate, and your booking confirmation is the place to look. For the wider budget frame, our Portugal trip-cost guide does the country-wide arithmetic.
The upgrade that earns its money in this particular month is a bed in Sintra town instead of a day trip from Lisbon. With 7.7 wet days and 2.1 soakings in thirty, a night on the hill lets you read the sky at breakfast, take the early entry on the clear morning and push the park to the afternoon when the cloud lifts. A day-tripper gets one attempt at whatever the sky is doing at eleven.
Things to do at Pena Palace in April: the park, the palace and Sintra town

Walking weather is April’s argument. At 67.8°F the climb from town through the woods is a pleasure rather than a chore, and the park is in full spring growth after a winter that put 2.63 inches into March alone. Come in May and afternoons run 73.0°F with two fewer wet days, drier but warmer on a slope with patchy shade. Come in March and you give up 2.7°F for much the same odds of getting rained on.
Name the stops before you go up. The palace terrace and the painted ramparts take an hour, longer if the rooms are full. The Park of Pena spreads downhill from there, with the High Cross at its top, the Queen’s Fern Valley in its damp fold and the Chalet of the Countess of Edla off to one side. The Moorish Castle’s wall runs along the next crest. Down in town, the Sintra National Palace and Quinta da Regaleira fill an afternoon between them. We hold no verified admission price for any of these, so none is quoted.
The stonework is the same in any month. The air is not. The High Cross gives the widest view on the hill and gives nothing at all when cloud sits on it, and cloud sits there more often in a month of 7.7 wet days than in May’s 5.7. The fern valley works the other way and is at its best wet. Lakes and channels in the park run full after the winter, and the gap between a 65.1°F March visit and a 67.8°F April one shows up mostly in how long you are willing to stand still at a viewpoint.
We could not verify any free-admission day at Pena in April, so we name none. What costs nothing is the town: the lanes below the Sintra National Palace, the viewpoints along the road up, and the walk back down through the woods when the last bus looks full. With sunset at 20:14, there is real evening in which to use all three.
Pena Palace in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Out of Lisbon on an early train, up to the gate for the first entry you managed to book, palace rooms first while the morning still sits near 53.2°F. Park from late morning: High Cross, then the chalet on the way down. Lunch in Sintra town around two, when the day is at its 67.8°F best. Late afternoon at the Moorish Castle wall or Quinta da Regaleira. Dinner outdoors, light until 20:14.
Day two follows the sky. On a clear one, take the town slowly and then the coast. On one of April’s 2.1 heavy days, flip the order: the Sintra National Palace and its kitchen chimneys in the morning, a long lunch while the worst passes over, the hill in the late afternoon if the cloud lifts, since April rain at 2.50 inches for the whole month usually moves through rather than settles. Carry the shell either way, because the ridge is wetter and mistier than the plain where these numbers are measured.
Pena Palace in April vs March and May
| 1991-2020 normal | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 65.1°F | 67.8°F | 73.0°F |
| Average low | 50.5°F | 53.2°F | 57.4°F |
| Precipitation | 2.63 in | 2.50 in | 2.00 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 7.2 | 7.7 | 5.7 |
March runs 65.1°F by day and 50.5°F at night, on 2.63 inches spread over 7.2 wet days. April lifts the afternoon to 67.8°F and the night to 53.2°F, with slightly less water at 2.50 inches. May jumps to 73.0°F and 57.4°F on 2.00 inches and only 5.7 wet days. The oddity is April’s wet-day count, the highest of the three even though March carries more total rain: April’s water arrives in more, smaller doses.
Move four weeks later and you gain 5.2°F on the afternoon, lose two wet days and half an inch of rain: the driest walking of the three. Move four weeks earlier and you trade 2.7°F for almost identical rain risk, although March mornings at 50.5°F make the climb comfortable and the park is already green. Our March page makes that case with its own figures, and the country-wide calendar sets both in context.
Is April a good time to visit Pena Palace?
Yes for anyone whose Pena is the park as much as the palace. Cool afternoons at 67.8°F, everything in leaf, and a hill you can climb without arriving damp from the effort. No if the trip hangs on the postcard shot of the towers against blue, because 7.7 wet days and a ridge wetter than the plain do not promise it, and one clouded morning in a two-day window can take it away entirely.
If the answer is no, shift to May. Its 73.0°F afternoons and 5.7 wet days on 2.00 inches give the best odds of the spring, and the park is still green rather than dried out. March is the other direction: 2.7°F colder, 2.63 inches of rain, and no improvement at all on the wet-day count.
What April gives that neither neighbor does is a park washed by 2.50 inches and an afternoon that still reads 67.8°F: the green of a wet month at temperatures you can climb in.
The last word
Decide the base first, because the rest of April follows from it: a night in Sintra town hands you the clear morning when it arrives, a day trip hands you whatever the sky is doing at eleven. One number worth converting before you set an alarm is the sunrise. It is published as 05:57 UTC for April 15, and Portugal’s clocks run an hour ahead of that in April, so first light lands at 06:57 and the sun goes down at 20:14. Book the earliest entry you can get, keep the shell in the day bag, and give the park the whole afternoon.
