Sagres in May: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and How It Compares to April and June

Sagres in May gets 14 hours and 13 minutes of daylight on the 15th, with sunrise at 6:25 a.m. and sunset at 8:38 p.m. in Lisbon time, under an average high of 70.7°F. With that much light, you can walk the cliff tops all afternoon and still drive out to Cabo de São Vicente in time to watch the sun go down off the southwest corner of Europe.

The catch sits in the water temperature: 62.2°F off the cape, barely half a degree up on April. That is a real swim for some people and a fast dip for everyone else, and it is the one thing May cannot fix for you. Rain, by contrast, has mostly cleared out: 0.87 inches across the month, spread over fewer than four days.

May gives Sagres 70.7°F afternoons, more than 14 hours of daylight and rain on fewer than four days, while the sea stays at a bracing 62.2°F, so come for the cliffs and treat the swim as a bonus.

Go for: cliff walking at Cabo de São Vicente in 70.7°F air, evenings that run to 8:38 p.m., and four village beaches you can choose by which way the wind blows.

Think twice before: building the trip around swimming: at 62.2°F the sea is almost exactly where April left it, and that figure averages the daily maximum.

The village itself, its layout and where to sleep belong to our Sagres guide, and the country-wide calendar sits in the best time to visit Portugal. Below, the date does the talking: what the thermometer on the cape records in May, what the Atlantic does with it, and what four weeks in either direction would buy you.

Sagres weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days

Average low 57.0°F (13.9°C)

Days with 0.39 in (10 mm) or more 0.5

Sea surface 62.2°F

Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and specifically from station 533 at Sagres, a real thermometer 22.9 m above sea level rather than a model grid cell. Its 1991–2020 normals put May at an average high of 70.7°F and an average low of 57.0°F, with 0.87 inches of rain over the month. One caveat travels with those numbers: they are measured on the exposed southwest cape and do not describe the wider region. Higher ground inland runs colder and far wetter, and the eastern end of the coast keeps its own weather.

Measurable rain falls on 3.9 days in an average May, counted at IPMA’s own threshold of 1 mm (0.04 inch). That works out to roughly one day in eight with something on the gauge, and most of those days are not write-offs: a shower that moves through while you are at lunch still counts. American tables usually count wet days at 0.10 inch, so the two sets of numbers are not interchangeable, and a US-style table would show fewer of them for the same month.

Between the 70.7°F high and the 57.0°F low sits 13.7°F of daily swing, and on a headland open to the Atlantic on two sides it feels wider than that once the sun drops. Pack for two climates in one day. Shorts and sunscreen cover the middle hours, and a windproof layer, long pants and something warm for an early breakfast on a terrace cover the rest of it.

On May 15 the day runs 14 hours 13 minutes, sunrise 6:25 a.m. and sunset 8:38 p.m. in Lisbon time, calculated from sunrise-sunset.org. The good light lands late: the cliffs at Cabo de São Vicente hold color well past 8 p.m., and dinner afterward is the normal shape of an evening here. Full daylight also arrives before 7 a.m., so an early walk on the beach costs you nothing but the alarm.

Can you swim in Sagres in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Sagres averages 62.2°F in May, from Open-Meteo’s marine series over 2015 to 2024. Read the figure for what it is: an average of daily maxima, not of the full 24 hours, so it sits a shade above a round-the-clock mean. Whatever a thermometer tells you at 8 a.m. will be under 62.2°F, and the afternoon reading is the flattering one.

In practice, 62.2°F (16.8°C) is swimmable without being comfortable. Expect the short version of a swim, the sharp intake of breath on the way in, and a towel that matters more than the water did. Children last less time than adults. Anyone who means to stay in wants a wetsuit, and the surf schools on this coast run in neoprene all year for exactly that reason.

We could not verify monthly wind or swell records for Sagres, so we give no figures for either. What the station record does establish is the exposure of the site, on the southwest corner of the country with open ocean on two sides. The workable answer is to pick the beach by the morning wind: Tonel, on the west side of the village, takes the Atlantic head on, while Mareta, around the corner on the south side, sits in the lee more often than not.

How busy is Sagres in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

On the calendar, May falls after the Easter break and before the school holidays of July and August, the classic shoulder position for the western Algarve. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Sagres, so we crown no month the cheapest and none the busiest. What stands up without data is the calendar itself: May is not a school-holiday month on either side of the Atlantic.

Our booking advice is judgment, not measurement, and we would rather say so. For a weekend in the second half of the month, have a room held several weeks out, and longer if you want one particular guesthouse rather than any bed in the village. Midweek in early May is the easier ask. For where the volume on this coast really concentrates, our Algarve guide lays out the resort towns against the quiet ends.

We could not verify whether a per-night tourist tax applies in Sagres, or at what rate, so no amount appears from us. Ask the property directly, or read the tax line on your confirmation, before you treat the quoted total as the final total.

One line is worth paying up for in May, and it is the car. With rain on 3.9 days and a cape that catches whatever the ocean sends, the fix for a gray morning is to drive east until the coast turns and the beaches face south. A car you can actually load, with the insurance settled in advance, converts those mornings into usable days. Our rental guide covers the tolls and the coverage trap.

Things to do in Sagres in May

A stone wind rose inside the walls of a clifftop fortress above the Atlantic

May is the month for walking the cliff tops in the middle of the day. At an average high of 70.7°F you can take the coastal sections of the Rota Vicentina at noon without rationing your water, and with rain on 3.9 days the odds run heavily your way. By June the average high is 75.0°F, and midday on an unshaded path starts to be a decision rather than a default.

The set pieces are close together. The Fortaleza de Sagres occupies its own promontory at the edge of the village, with the great stone wind rose inside the walls. Cabo de São Vicente, the lighthouse cape a short drive west, is the southwestern tip of mainland Europe. Four beaches sit within reach of the village: Tonel on the west, Mareta below the center, Beliche at the bottom of its stairway, and sheltered Martinhal at the eastern end. We could not verify current admission or opening hours for the fortress or the lighthouse buildings, so we print none: check them the week you travel.

What the date changes is the gap between air and water. From April to May the air gains 4.3°F while the sea gains 0.4°F, so the two pull apart. Beliche and Tonel hold the same swim they held four weeks earlier, 62.2°F against April’s 61.8°F; the fort, the cape road and the cliff paths are a different proposition in 70.7°F air than in 66.4°F.

We found no verified free-admission dates for Sagres sites in May, so we name none. What costs nothing in any month is most of the cape: the road out to Cabo de São Vicente and the pull-offs along it, the beaches themselves, and the coastal path running north up the west coast for as far as your legs allow.

Sagres in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one, breakfast at 8, while the air is still nearer the overnight 57.0°F than anything else. Take the Fortaleza de Sagres from mid-morning, when the promontory has warmed and the wind rose is lit. Lunch in the village, then Praia da Mareta for the warmest hours, roughly 2 to 6 p.m. Leave for Cabo de São Vicente by 8 and you have a clear half hour of light before the 8:38 p.m. sunset. Dinner afterward is the local timetable, not a late night.

Day two belongs to the coast path: head north out of the village on the Rota Vicentina while the ground is still cool, turn back when the wind stops being fun, then Beliche or Tonel for the afternoon, with a proper swim if you brought neoprene and a paddle if you did not. If the weather turns, and one May day in eight brings measurable rain, drive east instead. Lagos offers covered lunch, a market and boat trips out to Ponta da Piedade when the sea allows.

Sagres in May vs April and June

Measure April May June
Average high 66.4°F 70.7°F 75.0°F
Average low 53.6°F 57.0°F 61.2°F
Precipitation 1.37 in 0.87 in 0.15 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 5.7 3.9 0.7
Sea surface 61.8°F 62.2°F 65.3°F

Highs run 66.4°F in April, 70.7°F in May and 75.0°F in June, a steady climb of a bit over four degrees a month. Rain falls away much faster than that: 1.37 inches over 5.7 wet days in April, 0.87 inches over 3.9 days in May, then 0.15 inches over 0.7 days in June. The sea keeps its own schedule at 61.8, 62.2 and 65.3°F, which is another way of saying April and May are the same swim and June is a different one.

Shift four weeks earlier and you give up 4.3°F off the daytime high and take on nearly twice the rain, with the water no colder in any meaningful sense; our April page has those numbers in full. Shift four weeks later and June hands over 75.0°F days, a near-dry month at 0.15 inches, and 65.3°F water. Neither trade is about crowds on our side of the ledger, because we have no occupancy data to trade with. It is about water and rain.

Is May a good time to visit Sagres?

Yes, if your Sagres is a walking, driving, sitting-outside Sagres. Days at 70.7°F, rain on 3.9 of them and 14 hours 13 minutes of light on the 15th add up to a month where almost nothing on land has to be rescheduled. No, if the trip is built around swimming: 62.2°F means a wetsuit or a short, bracing dip, and no amount of sun in the forecast will change the reading.

If the answer is no, go in June. It brings 65.3°F water, 0.15 inches of rain across the whole month and 75.0°F afternoons, and nothing in the May record competes with that for a swimming holiday. If what you want instead is the empty version of the cape and you can take the weather, April sits 4.3°F cooler with 1.37 inches of rain over 5.7 days.

May’s own combination is a midday you can walk in at 70.7°F and an evening that holds light until 8:38 p.m., which April is too wet to promise and June too warm to guarantee at noon.

The last word

Book the bed first, then the car, and keep the cape sunset loose: with the sun down at 8:38 p.m., you can afford to wait for the clear evening rather than spend a cloudy one up there. The number we held back is the heavy-rain one. Days of 0.39 inch or more average 0.5 in May, so one May in two passes without a genuine downpour at all. Bring a windproof for the evenings and neoprene if you mean to swim.
