Óbidos in June: Weather, Rain Days, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

Óbidos in June is a dry month with a long evening. The Portuguese national weather service’s 1991-2020 normals put the average afternoon at 67.6°F (19.8°C), the month’s rain at 0.48 inch, and the count of days recording measurable rain at 2.2. On June 15 the sun sets at 9:07 p.m. local time. Which means the thing people come here to do, walk a complete ring of medieval walls around a white town, is available nearly every day of the month, and twice a day if you want it.

What June does not hand over is heat. An average high in the high sixties is walking weather rather than lying-on-sand weather, and we hold no verified sea temperature for this coast to tell you otherwise. July runs 1.3°F warmer and drier still. The town itself, its castle, its restaurants and its place in a Lisbon-based route, sits on our Óbidos guide, and a first trip can slot it into the 7-day itinerary.

June gives Óbidos long evenings and a dry month, 0.48 inch across 2.2 wet days, at an average high of 67.6°F that suits the rampart walk far more than the water.

Think twice before: booking June for the swimming: we could not verify a sea temperature for this coast, and July runs 1.3°F warmer on 0.20 inch of rain.

Óbidos stands behind a complete ring of walls a short drive inland from the Atlantic, and June is the month when the rain that soaked May stops: the gap between the two is 0.93 inch. For a two-night stay, where you sleep and when you climb the ramparts will shape the visit more than any ticket you buy.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and from a single instrument: station 531 at Cabo Carvoeiro on the Peniche headland, 32.0 m above sea level, averaged over 1991-2020. That is a real thermometer, not a model grid cell. It also stands on the open coast, while Óbidos sits slightly inland behind its walls. Read the normals below as a coastal reading: higher ground in the region runs colder and much wetter, and a different stretch of shoreline keeps its own weather.

The monthly total of 0.48 inch arrives in very few pieces. IPMA counts 2.2 days in an average June reaching at least 1 mm (0.04 inch), roughly one day in fourteen, and 0.2 day at 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more, which works out to a genuine soaking about one June in five. Those are the Portuguese service’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch bar American tables use, so the two counts do not swap. In practice a June plan loses an hour of walking, not a day.

Day to night the month moves only 6.4°F. A 67.6°F afternoon and a 61.2°F dawn belong to the same outfit plus one layer, so the bag question stays small: a light jacket for the ramparts at breakfast and again after dinner, a rain shell that folds into nothing, and shoes with grip. Óbidos is cobbles on a slope, and the wall walk is narrow and uneven stone. Our packing guide handles the rest of the suitcase.

On June 15 the sun clears the horizon at 6:08 a.m. and sets at 9:07 p.m. local time, converted from the 05:08 and 20:07 UTC that sunrise-sunset.org computes for the date. That comes to 14 hours 59 minutes of daylight. Dinner starts in full light, and the walls stay usable long after the last day-trip coach has pulled out of the parking area below the gate.

How warm is Óbidos in June?

The average high is 67.6°F and the average low 61.2°F, a spread of 6.4°F. Set beside its neighbors, that is the narrowest of the three: May opens 7.1°F between afternoon and dawn, July 6.5°F. A month that even-tempered rarely surprises you in either direction, and afternoons much past 70°F are a bonus rather than the norm.

Morning starts in sleeves. By one o’clock the walls are warm stone and a T-shirt does the job, and by nine in the evening the layer goes back on. As for the water, we could not verify a sea-surface temperature series for this stretch of the Atlantic, so we publish no number for it. Where such figures do appear, they are averages of daily maxima, a little warmer than a 24-hour mean, so treat any water reading you meet elsewhere as the top of the day rather than the day.

Freezing nights play no part in June here: the average low of 61.2°F sits some 29 degrees above the freezing point. We do not hold the station’s record extremes, so we give no absolute minimum for the month, only the 1991-2020 average.

How busy is Óbidos in June? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

June belongs to the run-up rather than the peak. We found no monthly occupancy figures and no room-rate series for Óbidos, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. What can be stated is the traffic pattern a small walled town shares with every other one: Óbidos is a standard day trip out of Lisbon, and the visitor load concentrates between late morning and mid-afternoon. The first three hours of a 14-hour-59-minute day, and the last three, go to whoever slept inside the gates.

Rooms within the walls are limited by the walls themselves, so in-town beds go first for June weekends. Decide in weeks rather than days. If the lane addresses are gone, Caldas da Rainha and the lagoon shore at Foz do Arelho are both a short drive away. Most American visitors arrive by car from Lisbon, which our rental guide covers, while getting around Portugal has the bus alternative and flights from the US has the arrival timing.

We could not verify whether the municipality charges a lodging tax, or at what rate, so we give no percentage and no per-night amount. Ask at check-in, and expect it either in cash or added to the final bill. Portuguese city taxes are set town by town, and a rate borrowed from Lisbon would be a guess wearing the clothes of a fact.

One upgrade changes June more than any other: a bed inside the gates. It buys 6:08 a.m. light on empty cobbles and 9:07 p.m. light on the ramparts in the same day, with no drive at either end. Meals, a ginjinha at a doorway counter, an hour in a museum: none of those moves the month the way sleeping in the middle of it does.

Things to do in Óbidos in June

June hands you dry stone and long light at the same time, which the other spring months split between them. May records 5.4 wet days and 1.41 inches, June 2.2 days and 0.48 inch. The rampart circuit therefore stops being a slow shuffle on slick granite and becomes a straightforward morning walk, and the evening runs long enough to do it a second time after dinner.

The sights inside the gates are few and close together: the ring of walls itself, Rua Direita running from the Porta da Vila up toward the castle, the Igreja de Santa Maria on the main square with its blue-and-white tiled interior, and the castle at the top, now a hotel. The aqueduct stands outside the town gate. Northwest, the Lagoa de Óbidos meets the Atlantic at Foz do Arelho, flat lagoon water on one side of the sand spit and open ocean on the other.

A lagoon barely notices the calendar, while the air does. June’s 67.6°F sits 2.8°F above May’s 64.8°F, and that difference shows up on the sand at Foz do Arelho in the afternoon rather than in the water. Inside the walls, those same 2.8°F plus the drop from 1.41 inches of rain to 0.48 make the whole seasonal change: the stone dries out, the cobbles stop shining, and a 7 a.m. circuit stops being a gamble.

The best hours cost nothing. Walking the lanes before the day-trip traffic builds, standing on the ramparts while the light goes long and orange after eight, looking across the lagoon from the beach at Foz do Arelho, which is public like every Portuguese beach. What we cannot tell you is what the church, the museum or the castle ask at the door, because no price for them sits in our sources.

Óbidos in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one stays inside the walls. Up at six, on the ramparts by half past, with sunrise at 6:08 and the town belonging to cats and bakers. Breakfast at eight. Rua Direita and Santa Maria between nine and eleven, lunch before the mid-day arrivals thicken, then the flat hours from one to four spent indoors or in a courtyard. Climb again at half past eight, hold the wall for the 9:07 p.m. sunset, and eat afterward.

Day two goes to the coast: the Lagoa de Óbidos and Foz do Arelho for the morning, then Peniche and Cabo Carvoeiro, where the thermometer behind every number above actually stands. If the day lands on one of June’s 2.2 wet ones, swap the order, take the tiled church and a long lunch, and drive up to the market town of Caldas da Rainha. A real soaking is a one-June-in-five event, so the swap usually costs an afternoon.

Óbidos in June vs May and July

1991-2020 normal May June July
Average high 64.8°F (18.2°C) 67.6°F (19.8°C) 68.9°F (20.5°C)
Average low 57.7°F (14.3°C) 61.2°F (16.2°C) 62.4°F (16.9°C)
Monthly rain 1.41 in 0.48 in 0.20 in
Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more 5.4 2.2 0.9
Sea temperature not verified not verified not verified

Across the three months the direction runs one way, warmer and drier. July beats June by 1.3°F in the afternoon and 1.2°F at night, which is small. The rain gap is not small: May pours 1.41 inches over 5.4 wet days, June 0.48 over 2.2, July 0.20 over 0.9. The biggest single step of the spring falls between May and June, when 0.93 inch of rain simply stops arriving.

Move four weeks earlier and you trade 2.8°F of afternoon warmth and dry stone for greener countryside and more than twice as many wet days. Move four weeks later and you gain the driest month of the three while losing evening length, since the days shorten from the solstice onward. May and July each have their own page, and the nearby coast reads differently again at Nazaré.

Is June a good time to visit Óbidos?

Yes, for anyone whose Óbidos is a walking Óbidos. A walled town at 67.6°F with 2.2 rain days and fifteen hours of light is close to ideal for that, and the cobbles are dry for almost all of it. No, if the trip was booked for sea swimming and a tan: these normals are mild rather than hot, and we hold no verified water temperature to reassure you with.

When the answer comes out no, July is the shift to make. It runs 68.9°F by day on 0.20 inch of rain across 0.9 wet days, so the risk of a washed-out beach afternoon falls without much change in the heat. May goes the wrong way for a sun-seeker at 64.8°F, 1.41 inches and 5.4 wet days, though the countryside is at its greenest.

What June alone gives is length: 14 hours 59 minutes of daylight on the 15th, the sun still up at nine in the evening, and the rain already down to 0.48 inch. Of May, June and July, only June holds both of those at once.

The last word

Book the room inside the gates and let the day-trip hours run around you. That is the June decision, and it is the only one here that costs real money. One number we have kept back: the June average low of 61.2°F sits just 3.6°F under May’s average high, so the coolest hour of a June night in Óbidos runs close to the warmest hour of a May afternoon. Pack the light jacket anyway, for the ramparts at nine.
