CARVOEIRO · JUNE · THE ALGARVE
June is when the Algarve’s rain stops and the heat has not yet taken over. The official normals for this stretch of coast put the average June high at 80.2°F and the average low at 64.0°F, with 0.20 inch of rain for the whole month. Add sea at 66.9°F and 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight on the 15th, and you get a vacation where nothing indoors is ever compulsory.
What June takes away is warm water and elbow room. At 66.9°F the Atlantic here swims cool by American standards, and the school-holiday weeks of July and August are close enough to be felt in flight prices out of the US. Where to sleep, how to reach the coast from Faro airport and what a week costs belong to our Algarve guide and the trip-cost page. Everything here is dated to the month.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · CARVOEIRO IN JUNE
June gives you the dry coast without July’s heat: 80.2°F days, a fifth of an inch of rain all month, and water at 66.9°F that swims cool but swims.
AVG HIGH 80.2°F · SEA 66.9°F · 0.8 WET DAYS · 14H45 OF DAYLIGHT
Go for: cliff-path walking in air that stays under July’s 84.9°F, boat mornings on a dry coast, and dinner outdoors with light still on the water at nine.
Think twice before: promising anyone bath-warm swimming. The sea reads 66.9°F as an average of daily maxima, and a first entry is brisk.

One housekeeping note before the numbers. We found no dated June event for Carvoeiro that we could verify, so none is named below. The town itself, its beaches and its practicalities live on the Carvoeiro guide, and the twelve-month view of the country sits in our best-time page.
Carvoeiro weather in June: average highs, lows and rain days
| June normal | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 80.2°F |
| Average low | 64.0°F |
| Precipitation, whole month | 0.20 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 0.8 |
| Days with 0.39 in (10 mm) or more | 0.2 |
| Daylight on June 15 | 14h 45m |
Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and from its 1991-2020 normals at station 554 in Faro, a real thermometer 5.0 meters above sea level rather than a model grid cell. Two cautions travel with it. Faro sits east of Carvoeiro, and the western half of this coast runs cooler and windier. Go inland or uphill and the readings stop applying: high ground is colder and far wetter than a coastal station will ever show.
An average June logs 0.8 days with at least 0.04 inch of rain. In plain terms, most Junes hand you a single damp day and some hand you none at all, which is why the month gets planned outdoors with a clear conscience. Watch the threshold, though: IPMA counts from 1 mm, not from the 0.10 inch that American tables use, so the wet-day counts are not interchangeable with the ones you read at home.
The gap between 80.2°F by day and 64.0°F at night runs 16.2°F, and it lands exactly when you are sitting outside a restaurant at half past nine with wet hair. A light sweater or a long-sleeve layer per person covers it, and nothing heavier is needed. Our packing guide has the rest of the list for a coastal week.
On June 15 the sun clears the horizon at 6:10 a.m. local time and goes down at 8:54 p.m., giving 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight. Useful light hangs on past the sunset figure, so a swim at seven in the evening is a normal thing to do, not a stunt, and dinner never has to start before eight.
Can you swim in Carvoeiro in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off Carvoeiro averages 66.9°F in June. That number comes from a different source than the air normals: the Open-Meteo Marine API, averaged over 2015-2024, and it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above what a full 24-hour average would give you. Tables that quote a 24-hour mean will read slightly cooler for the same water.
In practice 66.9°F is a committed entry rather than a gentle one. Children treat it as nothing, adults spend ten seconds regretting the decision and then swim happily for twenty minutes. For a long snorkel session along the cliffs, a shortie wetsuit turns a bracing dip into an afternoon, and plenty of rental outfits on this coast carry them.
On wind and swell we have less to offer: we could not verify a June wind or wave series for this stretch, so no figures appear. What our climate source does state is that the western half of the Algarve runs windier than Faro, which is the direction of Sagres. If a boat morning matters, aim it early, when this coast is generally at its calmest.
How busy is Carvoeiro in June? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
June sits in the run-up rather than at the summit. The European school holidays that fill Algarve resorts land in July and August, which puts June on the rising edge of the year: busier than May, quieter than the weeks after it. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Carvoeiro, so we crown no month cheapest and none most expensive. What we can date is the calendar, and the calendar says the peak is still ahead.
That shapes the booking order more than the budget. Rooms with a sea view and rental cars are the two things that disappear first as the peak approaches, and our editorial rule of thumb (est.), not a rate series, is to have both locked by early spring for a June week. Flights from the US run through Lisbon or Faro, and the flights guide covers the connections into Faro, the airport nearest the coast.
On the municipal tourist tax, we could not verify a rate for the municipality Carvoeiro belongs to, so we give no percentage and no nightly figure. Several Portuguese towns levy one per person per night, collected at check-in, and the sensible move is to ask when you book so it does not surprise you on arrival.
One upgrade changes June specifically: a car. With sunset at 8:54 p.m., a rental turns the whole coast into evening range, from Lagos to the coves east of town, long after the day-trip buses have gone. Our car guide covers the toll transponder and the insurance line, and the accommodation guide sorts the bases that still work without one.
Things to do in Carvoeiro in June

June opens two doors at once. The water has climbed to 66.9°F from May’s 63.4°F, so swimming stops being a dare, and the air is still 4.7°F below July’s 84.9°F average high, so a midday cliff walk remains a reasonable idea. With 0.20 inch of rain across the entire month, boat mornings rarely get called off for weather, which is not something May can promise on 1.03 inches.
The named targets are close together. Praia do Carvoeiro sits at the bottom of the main street; a stepped path and a wooden boardwalk run east from it to the Algar Seco rock formations, with Praia de Vale Covo and Praia do Paraíso on the same short stretch. Boats leave the slipway for the Benagil sea cave, and Ponta da Piedade is a morning’s drive west past Lagos. We found no dated operator fare or timetable we could stand behind, so we quote none.
What the month changes at those places is the air, not the water. The Atlantic inside the cave reads the same 66.9°F whichever week you go, but climbing back into a boat at 80.2°F feels entirely different from doing it at May’s 74.3°F. The reverse applies on the boardwalk: shade is scarce up there, and July’s extra degrees are felt on the stone long before they are felt in the sea.
The free half of a June day is the better half. Portuguese beaches are public, the cliff paths are open access, and the 8:54 p.m. sunset costs nothing to attend from the headland above the town. We could not verify parking charges at the beach lots, so leave a little room in the daily budget for them.
Carvoeiro in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one rides the light. Sunrise is at 6:10 a.m., so an 8:00 start on the Algar Seco boardwalk buys cool stone and empty steps. Swim around 11:30, once the sun has worked on the shallows, then eat and sit out the 2:00 to 4:00 stretch, when the thermometer is nearest its 80.2°F daily peak. Take the boat toward Benagil at five, when the light goes long. Dinner at eight, with the sun down at 8:54.
Day two goes west by car: Ponta da Piedade and Lagos in the morning, back in Carvoeiro for the late-afternoon swim and a second evening on the cliffs. If the one damp day of an average June lands on you, drive east instead to Faro and give the day to a walled old town. With 0.8 wet days per month on the record, that contingency is a backup plan, not an itinerary.
Carvoeiro in June vs May and July
| 1991-2020 normal | May | June | July |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 74.3°F | 80.2°F | 84.9°F |
| Average low | 59.0°F | 64.0°F | 67.3°F |
| Precipitation | 1.03 in | 0.20 in | 0.04 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 3.8 | 0.8 | 0.2 |
| Sea, mean daily max (2015-2024) | 63.4°F | 66.9°F | 66.8°F |
Air temperature climbs in even steps: June runs 5.9°F above May by day and 4.7°F below July, with the nights following at 5.0°F and 3.3°F. Rain behaves differently, collapsing rather than sliding, from 1.03 inches and 3.8 wet days in May to 0.20 inch and 0.8 in June. The sea is the surprise. At 66.9°F in June against 66.8°F in July, the water is already as warm as it will be a month later, while May trails 3.5°F behind.
Shift four weeks earlier and you trade heat and dryness for a quieter coast, accepting five times the wet days that May records and water three and a half degrees colder. Shift four weeks later and you gain 4.7°F of afternoon air and near-total dryness, but not one degree of sea, and you arrive inside the school-holiday weeks. June is the month that gets July’s water without July’s calendar.
Is June a good time to visit Carvoeiro?
Yes for walkers, for families who want reliable beach days without 85-degree afternoons, and for anyone who plans dinner around a late sunset. No for the traveler whose entire trip hinges on warm water: 66.9°F is swimmable, not luxurious, and no amount of sunshine changes the Atlantic. We hold verified figures only for May, June and July here, so we make no claim about how the fall compares.
If the answer for you is no, July is the month to move to, and the reason is air rather than sea. Its 84.9°F average high and 0.04 inch of monthly rain make it the surer sunbathing bet, at the cost of arriving with the European school holidays. Moving the other way, to May, buys quiet and green cliffs but hands back 3.5°F of water.
The one thing June holds alone: the solstice falls inside it, so these are the longest evenings of the year, and they arrive on a coast where the rain has already stopped.
The last word
Book June, then plan it backward from 8:54 p.m. The mornings belong to the boardwalk and the boats, the flat middle of the day belongs to shade, and the best hours of the whole trip are the ones after six. One last figure worth carrying: heavy rain, 0.39 inch or more in a day, shows up 0.2 times in an average June, which is roughly one washed-out day every five years of Junes. Pack the sweater for the 64.0°F nights and leave the raincoat at home.
