Carvoeiro in May: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and How It Compares to April and June

May is the month the Algarve stops being a forecast and starts being a beach town. Afternoons in Carvoeiro settle at 74.3°F, measurable rain turns up on fewer than four days in an average month, and the sun stays up past 8:30 p.m., which is enough daylight for a boat trip, a cliff walk and dinner outside on the same day.

What May withholds is the water. The sea off Carvoeiro averages 63.4°F, near-identical to April’s reading, so the Atlantic is still a decision rather than a pleasure. The town itself, cove by cove, belongs to our Algarve guide; the question sorted out below is the date.

May gives you 74.3°F afternoons, 14 hours of daylight and 3.8 rain days over a sea still sitting at 63.4°F: come for the cliffs and the light, and treat swimming as a short, bracing dare.

Go for: cliff-path walking in comfortable air, boat mornings out toward Benagil, long evening light for dinner outdoors, and beaches that are still quiet before the school holidays.

Think twice before: promising children hours in the water. That 63.4°F is the average of daily maxima, and the sea reads cooler at 8 a.m. than it does at 3 p.m.

Every air figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and specifically from its 1991-2020 normals for station 554 at Faro, a real thermometer 5.0 m above sea level rather than a model grid cell. May averages a high of 74.3°F, a low of 59.0°F and 1.03 inches of rain. A caveat travels with those numbers: Faro sits east of Carvoeiro, the western half of this coast runs cooler and windier, and inland high ground is colder and far wetter. Pack for a hill trail on a coastal reading and you will be underdressed.

Rain reaches the gauge on 3.8 days in an average May, using IPMA’s own threshold of 1 mm, or 0.04 inch. That works out to measurable rain about one day in eight, and most of those are a shower that clears rather than a lost day. A properly wet day, 10 mm or 0.39 inch, arrives 0.7 times per May, so roughly seven Mays in ten get one. American almanacs usually count days above 0.10 inch, and the two counts are not interchangeable, so resist comparing 3.8 with a number from a US table.

Between 74.3°F and 59.0°F there is a 15.3°F spread, and it happens inside a single day. Mid-afternoon on the clifftop is t-shirt weather. By ten at night above the cove you will want sleeves, and the morning air makes an 8 a.m. swim a very different proposition from a 3 p.m. one. One fleece, a windbreaker for the boat and a long-sleeve layer cover the whole month, and our packing guide takes it further.

On May 15 the sun rises at 6:21 a.m. and sets at 8:34 p.m. local time, giving 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight. That is a whole second act: the clifftop path east toward Algar Seco is comfortable at 7 p.m., and a table booked for 8 still starts in daylight. The early sunrise has its own reward, since the lanes down to the beach belong to nobody at 7 a.m.

Can you swim in Carvoeiro in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Carvoeiro averages 63.4°F in May, from the Open-Meteo marine series over 2015-2024. Read the method as well as the number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour average would show, and the water you wade into before breakfast is cooler than 63.4°F. Other sea-temperature tables use other methods and land on other values, which is why we name ours instead of rounding it into a single tidy claim.

In practice, 63.4°F is swimmable and unmistakably cold. Adults tend to go in fast, swim briefly and come out counting it an achievement. Children lose interest sooner than their parents expect, and anyone planning real distance in the water should pack a shorty wetsuit rather than count on borrowing one. Where May does deliver is the shallow end of the day: the cove’s sheltered water warms faster than the open coast once the afternoon sun is on it.

Wind and swell we cannot put a figure on. We found no monthly wind or wave series for Carvoeiro, and we will not pass off Faro’s as the town’s. What IPMA does tell us is that this coast runs windier as you move west of the Faro station, which matters the moment your plan involves a small boat. Cave trips toward Benagil run on the sea’s terms, so put the boat on your first morning and keep a later day in reserve.

How busy is Carvoeiro in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

May sits in the run-up to the peak rather than in it. Portuguese and northern European school holidays fall in July and August, and that calendar, not the thermometer, is what fills the cove, the slipway and every parking space above it. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for Carvoeiro, so we crown no month cheapest and quote no nightly figure. What we can say plainly is that May is a pre-holiday month with the Easter traffic already behind it.

Booking still deserves your attention, because May’s weather is no secret and Carvoeiro is one small town on one cove: the closer a bed sits to that cove, the fewer of them there are. Our own rule of thumb, judgment rather than a measured figure, is to settle lodging before flights for a late-May trip and to keep three or four nights as the working shape, with one of them uncommitted in case the wet day lands. The where-to-stay guide covers the street-by-street part.

On tax we hand you our uncertainty instead of a number. We could not verify whether a per-night tourist tax applies to Carvoeiro in May, or at what rate, so no percentage and no euro amount comes from us. Ask the property when you reserve, then slot the answer into the rest of the budget, which our Portugal trip-cost guide lays out line by line.

The one expense that genuinely changes May is the car. Everything the month rewards is spread along the coast rather than stacked in the town, and with 3.8 rain days you want the freedom to move a beach day by 20 miles instead of surrendering it. A car collected at Faro airport turns Praia da Marinha, Lagos and a rainy-morning detour inland into choices, as our car-rental guide and getting-around guide explain.

Things to do in Carvoeiro in May

Rock arches and a wooden walkway above the sea at Algar Seco near Carvoeiro

May is the month the cliff paths and the boats work on the same day. April makes you gamble with 5.3 wet days, June pushes afternoons to 80.2°F, and a coastal walk at 74.3°F with 14 hours of light asks nothing of you but water and a hat. That combination is what the month is for: sea in the morning, limestone underfoot in the late afternoon, no decision between them.

Names worth writing down: Algar Seco, the collapsed arches and sea windows east of town, reached on foot along the clifftop. Praia do Carvalho, entered through a tunnel cut in the rock. Praia de Vale Centeanes to the west, and Praia da Marinha further along the same cliff line. Offshore, the Benagil sea cave and, past Lagos, the stacks of Ponta da Piedade. We hold no verified fare for any boat operator or parking lot, so we quote none.

What May changes at all of them is the air, not the water. The sea reads 63.4°F, a tenth of a degree under April’s 63.5°F, while the afternoon air runs 5.0°F above April’s 69.3°F. That widening gap is the season itself: the walk out toward Marinha turns pleasant weeks before the swim does, and a cave trip stops being a cold-weather outing while still being a cold dip if you go over the side.

Free in May: the cliff paths, the viewpoints above the cove, the beaches themselves, and the stretch of evening between 7 p.m. and sunset at 8:34. Portuguese beaches carry no admission. Ask locally about parking charges, lifeguard cover and any seasonal beach services.

Carvoeiro in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one follows the light. Coffee by 8, then the clifftop east to Algar Seco while the air is still climbing toward its 74.3°F peak. Back for the cove by late morning, lunch in the shade, and the swim between 2 and 4 p.m., when the water is closest to that 63.4°F daily maximum. Late afternoon for the town steps and the viewpoints, dinner at 8 with sunset still 30 minutes away, and a sleeve for the 59.0°F that follows it.

Day two starts at sea, because early departures give the calmest water and the caves toward Benagil and Marinha are the reason you came in May rather than February. Afternoon goes to Lagos and the stacks off Ponta da Piedade. If the 0.39-inch day arrives, and it does in seven Mays out of ten, drive east instead: Faro‘s old town takes rain better than any clifftop, and the boat moves to the next clear morning.

Air, rain and sea move at three different speeds across these twelve weeks. The afternoon high climbs 5.0°F from April to May, then another 5.9°F into June. Wet days fall from 5.3 to 3.8 to 0.8, and monthly rainfall drops from 1.54 inches to 1.03 and then to 0.20. The sea ignores most of that: 63.5°F in April, 63.4°F in May, and only in June does it move, to 66.9°F. Air and rain figures are IPMA’s station normals; the sea values come from the marine model.

Shift four weeks later and you buy 3.5°F of water, near-dry skies and warmer evenings, at the cost of hotter afternoons and a coast starting to fill ahead of the holidays. Shift four weeks earlier and April hands back 5.0°F on the high, 1.5 extra wet days and no compensation in the sea, since it sits within a tenth of a degree of May’s. For the full twelve-month ranking, our best-time-to-visit guide does the sorting.

Is May a good time to visit Carvoeiro?

Yes, if your vacation happens mostly out of the water. Walkers, drivers, photographers and couples who want a cove to themselves at 8 a.m. get the best version of this coast in May: 74.3°F, 3.8 wet days, 14 hours of daylight. No, if the trip is measured in hours spent swimming, or if small children are the ones doing the swimming. A 63.4°F sea will not hold them, whatever the air says.

For that family, June is the straightforward answer: 66.9°F water, 80.2°F afternoons, 0.8 wet days, and the school holidays not yet started. The trade is real, because those same afternoons make a midday cliff walk hard work and the coast is visibly busier by the end of the month. Anyone who can move only a fortnight should aim at the last days of May rather than the first.

What no other month matches is the combination: 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight over air that already reads 74.3°F, on a coast the July calendar has not reached yet.

The last word

Book May for the air and the light rather than the water, and put the boat on your first morning so a fallback day still exists. One figure to carry down the cliff steps with you: between April and June the afternoon air gains 10.9°F while the sea gains just 3.4°F, which is why the Atlantic here runs a month behind the calendar all spring. Dress for a 59.0°F evening and you will use every one of May’s 14 hours, right through the 8:34 p.m. sunset.
