LAGOS · APRIL · THE ALGARVE
April hands Lagos a 66.4°F afternoon, a 53.6°F night and a sea at 61.8°F. Those three readings set the shape of a week here: the clifftop paths are comfortable at midday, the water is a short cold dip rather than an afternoon in the shallows, and the light holds past eight in the evening.
What April takes away is the warm-water swim and any guarantee of a dry week, since 5.7 days in an average April record at least 0.04 inch of rain. What it gives back is a 13-hour day at walking temperature, with the town’s museum hours sitting comfortably inside it. Everything not dated to this month lives in the Algarve guide.

LAGOS IN APRIL · THE NUMBERS
April is a walking, looking and eating month in Lagos: 66.4°F afternoons and 13 hours of daylight, with a 61.8°F sea that makes swimming a brief, bracing decision rather than a plan.
IPMA 1991-2020 NORMALS · STATION 533 SAGRES, 22.9 M · SEA FROM DAILY MAXIMA 2015-2024
Go for: cliff paths at a temperature you can walk all day, a museum day that fits between 10:00 and 18:00, and two hours of daylight left after the doors close.
Think twice before: building the trip around the water. A sea at 61.8°F is a wetsuit, and May improves it by 0.4°F.

Every figure here comes from one instrument: IPMA station 533 at Sagres, 22.9 m above sea level, the nearest published station to Lagos and the windiest point of the Algarve. It does not describe the whole region. High ground inland runs colder and far wetter, and the far end of the coast keeps its own weather, so pack for a mountain trail on mountain data and not on a coastal reading.
Lagos weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days

|---|---|---|
| Average high | 66.4°F (19.1°C) | IPMA 1991-2020, station 533 Sagres |
| Average low | 53.6°F (12.0°C) | IPMA 1991-2020, station 533 Sagres |

The normals below sit in IPMA’s 1991-2020 series: average high 66.4°F, average low 53.6°F, 1.37 inches of precipitation over the month. That is a thermometer on the coast rather than a model grid cell, and the distinction earns its place the moment two tables disagree by a couple of degrees over the same April.
Rain shows up on 5.7 days in an average April, counted at IPMA’s threshold of 1 mm (0.04 inch), so measurable wet lands roughly one day in five. Only 0.9 of those days reaches 10 mm (0.39 inch), meaning a real soaking averages about one per April. American tables usually count at 0.10 inch instead, and the two sets of counts do not convert into each other.
Between the 66.4°F high and the 53.6°F low sits 12.8°F, and the drop arrives fast once the sun is off the water. A fleece and a windproof shell do more work in April than a second swimsuit, and the station’s exposure at Sagres argues hard for the windproof. Our packing guide takes the rest of the bag.
On April 15 the sun rises at 06:59 and sets at 20:12 local time (05:59 and 19:12 UTC, Portugal running an hour ahead through the month), for 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight. Two of those hours fall after the museum doors shut at 18:00, which is the difference between a day that ends at a ticket desk and one that ends on a clifftop.
Can you swim in Lagos in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off Lagos averages 61.8°F in April. That number comes from the Open-Meteo Marine series over 2015-2024, and it is a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. The water you meet at eight in the morning sits below the figure, not above it.
At 61.8°F (16.6°C) the sea is swimmable and unfriendly in roughly equal measure for anyone used to Florida. Plan on a quick entry, a few minutes of actual swimming, and a towel that matters. Wetsuits are standard kit on this coast in spring and the surf schools rent them. Waiting four weeks buys 0.4°F of water, because the sea warms long after the air has.
We found no April wind or wave series for Lagos, so we put no figure on the swell. The one wind fact our sources carry concerns the thermometer rather than the forecast: IPMA’s nearest published station stands at Sagres, the windiest point of the Algarve, which is a caution about the readings. Sagres, further along the same coast, has its own page.
How busy is Lagos in April? Crowds, prices and booking ahead
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Lagos, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can date is the calendar. The town museum’s published closure list puts 25 April in the middle of a possible trip, along with Easter Sunday when Easter falls in April, and those are the two dates capable of rearranging a day.
Without a rate series we give no booking lead time in weeks. The thing worth arranging early is the shape of the day rather than the price of it: the Rota da Escravatura runs Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, with last admission half an hour before closing, so an afternoon arrival at 17:45 buys a quarter of a visit.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Lagos, so no percentage appears here. Country-level budgeting sits in what a week in Portugal costs, and the paperwork side in the entry guide.
One upgrade genuinely changes April rather than decorating it: a heated pool at the hotel buys the swim that 61.8°F seawater will not. A car is the other, since one of the museum’s seven sites, the Roman bath house, sits out at Praia da Luz west of town. Our rental guide covers the tolls and the paperwork.
Things to do in Lagos in April: Praça do Infante, Vale da Gafaria and Praia da Luz

Two things line up in April that rarely line up together: air at 66.4°F, which turns a full day on the cliffs into a pleasure rather than an ordeal, and 13 hours of daylight to spend it in. March offers 64.0°F and 6.3 wet days for the same walk. May offers 70.7°F and drier skies, and takes the cool-walking advantage off the table for anyone who overheats.
The Rota da Escravatura, also called the Mercado de Escravos, stands on Praça do Infante and tells Lagos’s part in the fifteenth-century slave trade, Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00. Its hardest material came out of the ground in 2009 at Vale da Gafaria, where a dig ahead of an underground car park uncovered a refuse tip holding more than 150 human skeletons: African people brought to Lagos as merchandise and discarded with the urban waste.
None of that moves with the season. The fort’s walls went up between 1680 and 1690 to cross fire with the Porta da Vila over the quay, and the museum keeps the same hours in February. April changes the air around them, and the arithmetic of the day: doors shut at 18:00, daylight runs to 20:12, so the indoor hours can take the middle and the cliffs get both ends. The fort is temporarily closed, per the museum’s page updated 16 July 2026, which costs you the moat, the drawbridge and a small seventeenth-century chapel lined with azulejos.
We could not verify an admission price for any Museu de Lagos site, and our sources carry no figure at all for Ponta da Piedade or the beaches, so this guide quotes none. What needs no ticket desk is the clifftop walk at Ponta da Piedade and the square the museum opens onto. The museum counts seven sites in all, and the seventh is that Roman bath house at Praia da Luz.
Lagos in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one follows the light. Out at 07:00, a minute after sunrise, for the clifftops while the air is well under the day’s 66.4°F. Back into town by 10:00 for the Rota da Escravatura on Praça do Infante, which closes at 13:00 and reopens at 14:00. Take the break at a table, then give the second session to the Dr. José Formosinho collection. At 18:00 the doors close with two hours of daylight in hand: waterfront first, dinner after.
Day two heads west to Praia da Luz and the Roman bath house, then comes back for the evening light. If the sky turns, and 5.7 days in an average April carry 0.04 inch or more, flip the order and let the split hours do their job: indoors from 10:00, outside again when it clears. A full soaking of 0.39 inch or more averages under one day per April, so the wet hour is far likelier than the wet day.
Lagos in April vs March and May
| Measure | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 64.0°F | 66.4°F | 70.7°F |
| Average low | 51.1°F | 53.6°F | 57.0°F |
| Precipitation | 1.92 in | 1.37 in | 0.87 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 6.3 | 5.7 | 3.9 |
| Sea surface | 60.2°F | 61.8°F | 62.2°F |
March runs 64.0°F by day and 51.1°F at night, with 1.92 inches of rain spread over 6.3 wet days. April lifts the afternoon by 2.4°F and cuts the rain to 1.37 inches over 5.7 days. May takes the bigger step: 70.7°F days, 0.87 inch, 3.9 wet days. Water lags behind air right through the spring, at 60.2°F, 61.8°F and 62.2°F, those three coming from the marine series rather than the IPMA station.
Pushing four weeks forward buys 4.3°F of afternoon and 1.8 fewer wet days, and returns 0.4°F of sea, so a May trip is a warmer walk and not a warmer swim. Pulling back to March costs 2.4°F and adds half an inch of rain, though the 25 April closure stops being your problem.
Is April a good time to visit Lagos?
Yes, if you came to walk, look and eat. An afternoon at 66.4°F with 13 hours of daylight is the temperature people hope for on a coastal path, and the museum hours cover the middle of the day when the sun is highest. No, if the trip rests on the water. At 61.8°F the sea is a wetsuit proposition, and no April week is going to move that.
If the swim is the deal-breaker, a four-week shift is not the fix: May adds 0.4°F of sea and nothing beyond it. Take the swimming question to our year-round verdict for Portugal, which weighs the whole calendar rather than one neighbor month.
Among the three months we can compare with the same station, April is the one that gains 2.4°F on March while dropping half an inch of rain, and still keeps the cool-walking air that May starts to spend.
The last word
Come in April for the cliffs and the reading, put the indoor hours in the middle of the day, and leave the swimming to a trip with warmer water. One detail worth knowing before you stand in front of it: the cylindrical sentry boxes on Forte Ponta da Bandeira are not seventeenth-century at all, they were added by restoration work around 1960, and the fort behind them is shut for now. If your dates include 25 April, the Rota da Escravatura is closed that day, so move it to the 24th and keep the 25th for the coast path.
