Cascais in May: Weather Normals, Crowds, Prices and a Two-Day Plan

May gives Cascais its long evenings back. On the 15th the sun rises at 6:22 am and sets at 8:43 pm, 14 hours and 21 minutes of daylight, and the afternoon normal settles at 73.0°F. Rain has not finished with this coast, but it is packing: 2.00 inches across the month, against 2.50 in April.

What May withholds is June’s near-guarantee of dry weather, 0.53 inches and highs of 79.0°F. What it hands over is cooler ground for walking and a coast still short of its summer temperature. April and June have their own pages, and the three months line up in figures below.

May buys you a 73.0°F afternoon, light until 8:43 pm and roughly six wet days, which is the last stretch of the year when the serra behind Cascais can be walked in cool air.

Go for: cliff walking in 73°F air, a 14-hour day to spend on it, and the climb into the serra before June’s 79.0°F afternoons.

Think twice before: planning a beach-only week. May still records 2.00 inches of rain and 1.9 days of 10 mm or more, and we found no sea-temperature series we could verify.

One thing to settle before any of it. The thermometer behind these normals belongs to IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, and it stands at Lisboa Gago Coutinho, 103.9 m (341 ft) up and inland at the airport. Cascais faces the open Atlantic and runs cooler and windier than that reading, and the serra behind the coast is colder and far wetter again.

IPMA’s 1991-2020 normals for station 579 give May an average high of 73.0°F, an average low of 57.4°F and 2.00 inches of precipitation. That is a real thermometer, not a model grid cell, and the distinction matters: reanalysis figures for the same square of coast can sit a couple of degrees off a station record. Every figure here carries the station’s inland bias, so read it as the Lisbon coast’s May rather than the Sintra ridge’s.

An average May records rain on 5.7 days at the 1 mm mark (0.04 inch), roughly one day in five, and 1.9 of those reach 10 mm (0.39 inch), so a genuine soaking turns up about twice. Those are IPMA’s thresholds, not the 0.10-inch bar American tables use, and the counts are not interchangeable. Spread across the wet days, the month’s 2.00 inches work out near a third of an inch each, the size of shower you sit out with a coffee.

Between the 73.0°F afternoon and the 57.4°F dawn sits a gap of 15.6°F, and on the Atlantic side the wind widens the felt difference. Pack for two temperatures in one day: a windproof shell for the dunes and the cliff path, a real sweater for eating outside after sunset, and shoes that cope with sand and with wet stone. Our packing guide covers the rest of the Portugal kit.

Daylight on May 15 runs 14 hours 21 minutes, from 6:22 am to 8:43 pm in local time (05:22 and 19:43 UTC, with Portugal on summer time). The practical effect is an afternoon that never ends before you do: a full walk can start at 5 pm and still finish in daylight, and dinner slides to a Portuguese hour without anyone eating in the dark.

How warm is Cascais in May? Highs near 73°F, nights near 57°F

The month’s two ends are 73.0°F and 57.4°F. Against April, that high is 5.2°F warmer and the low 4.2°F milder. Against June, May gives up 6.0°F by day and 4.3°F at night. So this is the month the coast stops being cool and does not yet get hot, with the widest daily swing of the three sitting at 15.6°F.

In clothes, that means a jacket at breakfast and shirt sleeves by two o’clock, with the jacket back on wherever the Atlantic wind has a clear run at you, above all at Guincho. Anyone sitting still outdoors at 9 pm, when the temperature has already started for the overnight low, will want the warm layer that felt ridiculous at lunchtime.

No frost figure appears in the IPMA normals we read, and a monthly mean low of 57.4°F sits 25°F above freezing, so we give no frost-day count and none is in prospect at sea level. We also found no sea-surface temperature series for Cascais, so no water figure appears. If you consult one elsewhere, check its method first: coastal sea tables usually average daily maxima, which run a little warmer than a true 24-hour mean.

How busy is Cascais in May? Crowds, room prices and the tourist tax

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Cascais, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can date is the weather side of demand. May’s 2.00 inches and 5.7 wet days sit between April’s 2.50 and 7.7 and June’s 0.53 and 2.0, and the summer coast opens somewhere inside that gap. For what a Portuguese week actually costs, our trip-cost guide does the arithmetic.

Without a rate series we will not tell you how many weeks ahead to book, and anyone who gives you a number from the same data we have is guessing. Two things are finite whatever the calendar says: rental cars and rooms in the center of a small town. Settle the car early if the park is part of the plan, with our car guide on tolls and pickup, and use where to stay to pick the base before the price.

We could not verify whether Cascais levies a municipal lodging tax, or at what rate, so we give no percentage and no per-night amount. Ask when you book, and read the check-in bill rather than the booking total. The paperwork side of a Portugal trip, from entry rules to card use, sits in know before you go.

There is one line where spending more genuinely changes May rather than the trip, and it is wheels. The Sintra-Cascais Natural Park covers 14,583 hectares, about 36,035 acres or 56 square miles, across the municipalities of Sintra and Cascais. That is more ground than a town-center base reaches on foot, and the month’s best hours are the ones spent out on it.

Things to do in Cascais in May: Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Guincho and Cabo Raso

May’s particular gift is a long walking day in air that has not turned hot. April offers 67.8°F afternoons and 7.7 wet days, which makes the coast a cooler and chancier outing, while June’s 79.0°F turns the same climb into the serra into warmer work. With light until 8:43 pm, a full cliff route fits after a long lunch instead of replacing it.

The park itself is the headline. Protected first as a Protected Landscape by Decree-Law 292/81 of 15 October 1981, it was reclassified as a Natural Park by Regulatory Decree 8/94 of 11 March 1994, its management plan approved by Regulatory Decree 9/94 the same day. Inside it: the Guincho-Oitavos dune system, coastal lapies north of Cabo Raso, a karst relief rare on this coast, and Pedra Amarela rising to 406 m (1,332 ft) in the serra behind.

None of that rock moves with the calendar. The air does, and that is the whole argument for May over June here: 73.0°F on the dunes and the ridge instead of 79.0°F. Two raptors nest in the park, the peregrine falcon and Bonelli’s eagle, and a 14-hour day gives more sky to watch. In the least accessible corners, remnant oak forest still shelters threatened species such as holly, Ilex aquifolium.

On money, our reading came up short and we will say so. We could not read an admission price, an opening hour or a closing day for any Cascais site, and the municipality publishes an events agenda without figures we could check, so we name no May event and no free day. Call whatever matters to your plan during the week you travel, and treat the coast path and the daylight as the part nobody has to schedule.

Cascais in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one belongs to the coast. Leave around 8:30 am, when the air is still close to the 57.4°F low and the light is flat and kind, and take the shoreline north toward the Guincho-Oitavos dunes before the Atlantic wind gets its afternoon strength. Lunch in town, then the cliff line out to Cabo Raso and the lapies above it through the warmest stretch, 73.0°F on the normals. Sunset at 8:43 pm means dinner can wait until you are done.

Day two goes up: the serra behind the coast, with Pedra Amarela at 406 m (1,332 ft) as the target and the oak remnants on the way. If yours is one of May’s 5.7 wet days, turn inland instead. Colares keeps its international name for wine, and the same ground grows the Colares reinette apple, the rose peach, the thick-skinned lemon and the pearl pear. Sintra’s palaces take rain better than a dune crossing does.

Cascais in May vs April and June

Month Average high Average low Precipitation Days with 1 mm or more
April 67.8°F 53.2°F 2.50 in 7.7
May 73.0°F 57.4°F 2.00 in 5.7
June 79.0°F 61.7°F 0.53 in 2.0

Read across the three and the coast dries out faster than it warms. Highs climb 5.2°F from April to May and another 6.0°F into June, a fairly even ramp. Rainfall does nothing of the sort: 2.50 inches, then 2.00, then 0.53, a drop of nearly three quarters in a single step, with wet days falling from 7.7 to 5.7 to 2.0. We found no sea-temperature series for any of the three, so the water stays out of this comparison.

Shift four weeks later and you gain the dry month, 2.0 wet days against 5.7, at the cost of walking the serra in 79.0°F air. Shift four weeks earlier and the hillside is cooler and greener at 67.8°F, with two extra wet days in the month and a shorter afternoon. May is the trade in the middle, and the one that suits a trip built on legs rather than on a beach towel.

Is May a good time to visit Cascais?

Yes, if your Cascais involves the cliff path, the dunes and the park behind them. A 73.0°F afternoon, a 14-hour day and roughly six wet days out of 31 is a strong hand for that trip. Say no if the plan is a straight beach week with swimming at its center: the month still records 1.9 days of 10 mm or more, and we have no verified water temperature to offer you either way.

If the answer came out no, June is the month to move to, and the reason is the rain column rather than the thermometer: 0.53 inches and 2.0 wet days, with 79.0°F afternoons as the price. Move the other way, to April, only if you want the serra cool and green and will accept 7.7 wet days. Our twelve-month view of Portugal sets both against the rest of the country.

What no other month gives is this combination: daylight already past 14 hours on the 15th, and afternoons still six degrees short of June’s heat for the climb toward Pedra Amarela.

The last word

Book the car before the room and May does the rest, because the good hours here are the ones spent out on the 36,035 acres between Cascais and Sintra rather than in the town. One caution worth carrying up the path: ICNF describes this as a sensitive area held under heavy human pressure, which is reason enough to stay on the marked ground at the Guincho-Oitavos dunes, where the habitats sit directly underfoot.
