SINTRA · JUNE · 38.8° N
Sintra in June runs on long light and very little rain. The 1991-2020 normals put the month at an average high of 79.0°F and an average low of 61.7°F, with 0.53 inch of precipitation across the whole month and two days that record 1 mm or more. On June 15 the sun clears the horizon at 6:09 a.m. and sets at 9:04 p.m. local time, which leaves roughly three hours of daylight after the last palace door has shut.
One caveat before you pack. Those normals come from IPMA’s station 579 at Lisboa Gago Coutinho, a real thermometer at 103.9 m, some 20 km away and far lower than the Serra. The Sintra hill makes its own cloud and runs several degrees colder and mistier than the airport reading, so a June morning at Pena’s gate can feel like a different month from the same morning in the capital. Every figure here is the airport’s unless we say otherwise.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SINTRA IN JUNE
June gives near-July dryness at May-ish temperatures: 79.0°F afternoons, 0.53 inch of rain and daylight to 9:04 p.m., with every ticket desk shut by 7 p.m.
IPMA 1991-2020 NORMALS · 2.0 WET DAYS · PENA PARK AND PALACE 20 EUR · DAY TRIP OR TWO NIGHTS
Go for: dry walking weather in Pena’s 210-hectare park, Monserrate’s 3,000-plus species on the north slope, and light that outlasts the last gate by three hours.
Think twice before: planning the day off the airport normals, because the Serra sits colder and mistier than station 579, and before budgeting a room: we found no occupancy or rate data for June.

Most readers come out from the capital for the day, and June’s clock is what makes that work: gates open at 9 a.m., the last palace admission is 5:30 p.m., and the sun holds until 9:04 p.m. Two nights in town turn the same list into a slower trip with the hill to yourself before the first buses. Lisbon is the usual base for the short version.

The table comes from IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, and from its 1991-2020 normals at station 579, Lisboa Gago Coutinho, altitude 103.9 m. That is a staffed thermometer rather than a reanalysis grid cell, which matters the moment a page starts quoting tenths of a degree. It is also not on the hill: 20 km from the palaces and much lower down. Read 79.0°F as the valley’s afternoon, then subtract for altitude and cloud when you are standing on the Moorish Castle wall.
Two days in an average June record at least 1 mm of rain, which is 0.04 inch, and 0.4 day records 10 mm or more. Over thirty days that works out to measurable rain about one day in fifteen, and a genuine soaking in roughly two Junes out of five. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch line American tables use, so the counts do not swap with a US almanac. Carry a shell for the ridge rather than an umbrella for the month.
Between the two normals sits 17.3°F of daily swing, from a 61.7°F mean low to a 79.0°F mean high. Mornings on the hill start cool, often with cloud dripping off the trees, and the afternoon opens up. Pack a layer you can carry: a long sleeve or light fleece for the 9 a.m. walk up to Pena’s gate, short sleeves by noon, the same layer again when the sun drops behind the Serra. Our Portugal packing list handles the rest of the suitcase.
June 15 gives 14 hours 55 minutes between a 6:09 a.m. sunrise and a 9:04 p.m. sunset. Nothing ticketed is open for the last three of them. The Moorish Castle closes at 6 p.m., Pena’s park and Monserrate’s park at 7 p.m., and after that the hill belongs to whoever is still walking. For a day trip that is the whole difference between a rushed visit and an unhurried one.
How warm is Sintra in June?
Both headline figures are averages of daily readings, not extremes: 79.0°F is where a normal June afternoon tops out at station 579, and 61.7°F is where the night bottoms out. The 17.3°F between them is a wide gap for a coastal month, and it is the reason a visit that starts cool ends up hot.
In practice you want sleeves at the 9 a.m. gate and shade on the Monserrate lawns at 3 p.m. The climbs are the variable, not the air. Walking up from the town to Pena’s entrance, or up the stone stairs along the Moorish Castle wall, turns a 79.0°F afternoon into work. The 4.50 EUR round-trip transfer between Pena’s park entrance and the palace door exists for exactly that stretch.
Cold nights are not a June concern, and we could not count them in any case: IPMA’s normals give a monthly mean minimum, not a tally of nights below a threshold, and we read no daily series. With the mean low at 61.7°F, close to 30 degrees above freezing, the night layer you carry is a light one.
How busy is Sintra in June? Crowds, ticket prices and booking ahead
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Sintra, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can price is the fixed part. These are the tariffs Parques de Sintra published on September 22, 2026, with no seasonal tier in them: 12 EUR for Pena’s park alone, 20 EUR for the Essential visit that adds the palace, 45 EUR for the Full Tour, 12 EUR at the Moorish Castle, 12 EUR at Monserrate, 11 EUR at the Convent of the Capuchos and 13 EUR at the National Palace of Sintra. Children under 6 enter free.
How far ahead June fills is something we could not verify, so we quote no lead time in weeks. The constraint we can state is the clock, and it rewards an early ticket. Pena’s palace stops admitting at 5:30 p.m. and the Moorish Castle at the same minute, while Pena’s park takes walkers until 6 p.m. and stays open to 7 p.m. Buy the timed palace visit for the morning and let 210 hectares of park absorb the afternoon.
On the lodging tax, we could not verify a rate for the Sintra municipality, so we give no percentage and no nightly amount. The same applies to the journey in: we could not read a train fare or a journey time from Lisbon off an operator page, nor a bus timetable inside the Serra. Our getting-around guide covers the national picture, and the ticket prices above are the only ones we stand behind for June.
If one line of the budget changes this month, it is the 4.50 EUR transfer up to Pena’s palace door. On a 79.0°F afternoon with fifteen hours of daylight to spend, the climb is where people arrive already tired, and 4.50 EUR buys back the legs for the castle wall afterward. The 45 EUR Full Tour buys more rooms instead of more time, and June’s weather argues for time outdoors. Budget context for the whole trip sits in what a week in Portugal costs.
Things to do in Sintra in June: Pena, Monserrate and Cabo da Roca

June is the month the long outdoor visits stop being a gamble. May records 2.00 inches of rain over 5.7 wet days; June records 0.53 inch over 2.0. The walk out to the Convent of the Capuchos, open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 11 EUR, is a different proposition when the ground is dry and the light holds to 9:04 p.m.
Pena’s park covers 210 hectares behind a stone wall, with the Tapada do Mocho and the Moorish Castle inside it, begun around 1840 by Ferdinand II and planted with species brought from North America, Asia and New Zealand. Monserrate holds 50 hectares on the Serra’s north slopes and more than 3,000 exotic species, set out after an analysis of the land’s microclimatic zones: park 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., palace 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., 12 EUR. West of both, the Cabo da Roca lighthouse opens its courtyard and interpretation center 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 5 EUR, or 10 EUR up the tower.
Those gardens were laid out for a hot Portuguese summer, and June is when the planting shows what it is for. Monserrate’s north-facing slopes hold shade and damp air while the valley reads 79.0°F, and Pena’s imported canopy does the same job higher up. The hill’s own cloud is part of the bargain: the Serra makes mist that station 579 never sees, so the same hour can be bright in the town and gray on the palace terrace. Move the summit visit earlier when the top is capped.
Free in June, as in any month: Villa Sassetti, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the gardens of the National Palace of Sintra, where the 13 EUR only buys the interior. Children under 6 pass Pena’s gate for nothing. With the sun up until 9:04 p.m., the unticketed hours outlast the paid ones by three.
Sintra in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one goes up. Be at Pena’s park gate at 9 a.m. in the cool, 12 EUR for the park alone or 20 EUR for the Essential visit with the palace, and take the palace slot before 11 a.m. while the rooms are still bearable. Ride the 4.50 EUR transfer up, walk down. Spend midday under the 210 hectares of imported canopy, then cross to the Moorish Castle in mid-afternoon, 12 EUR, last admission 5:30 p.m. Descend through Villa Sassetti before it closes at 6 p.m. and reach the town with three hours of light left.
Day two runs west and lower. Monserrate’s park opens at 9 a.m. and its palace at 9:30, 12 EUR, and the 50 hectares take a slow two hours. Add the Convent of the Capuchos, 11 EUR to 5:30 p.m., or push on to the Cabo da Roca lighthouse, courtyard shutting at 5:30 p.m. If the sky turns, which June does about two days in thirty, move indoors: the National Palace of Sintra in the town center runs 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 13 EUR, and Monserrate’s rooms stay open to 6 p.m. A coast day at Cascais is the other fallback.
Sintra in June vs May and July
| 1991-2020 normal | May | June | July |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 73.0°F (22.8°C) | 79.0°F (26.1°C) | 82.9°F (28.3°C) |
| Average low | 57.4°F (14.1°C) | 61.7°F (16.5°C) | 64.4°F (18.0°C) |
| Precipitation | 2.00 in | 0.53 in | 0.11 in |
| Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 5.7 | 2.0 | 0.4 |
Across the three months the temperature climbs steadily: 73.0°F, 79.0°F, 82.9°F for the afternoon, and 57.4°F, 61.7°F, 64.4°F for the night. Rain falls away faster than the heat rises. May’s 2.00 inches over 5.7 wet days become 0.53 inch over 2.0 days in June, then 0.11 inch over 0.4 day in July. On the water we have nothing to offer for any of the three: no sea-surface series for this coast passed our check, so we make no swimming claim here.
Shift four weeks back and May hands you 6.0°F off the afternoon for the climbs, at a cost of close to four times the rain and nearly six wet days. Shift four weeks forward and July all but removes the rain, while the afternoon gains 3.9°F and the nights stop cooling below 64.4°F. June keeps most of July’s dry column and stays cooler on both ends of the day. Our May page argues for the greener version, and the year-round view sits in when to visit Portugal.
Is June a good time to visit Sintra?
For most travelers, yes, with one group excepted. If you came for palaces and parks on foot, June delivers 0.53 inch of rain, 14 hours 55 minutes of daylight and valley afternoons averaging 79.0°F, cooler and mistier on the hill. If someone in your party struggles with stairs and slopes in warm air, the Serra will be hard work: the Moorish Castle is essentially a wall walk, and Pena’s gate sits well above its town.
When the answer is no, May is the month to prefer over July. Its 73.0°F afternoons and 57.4°F nights make every climb easier, and the price is 2.00 inches of rain spread over 5.7 days, which a flexible two-day plan can work around by swapping in the National Palace’s interiors. July removes the rain but adds heat at both ends of the day, and nights holding at 64.4°F give back less than May’s.
Against those two, June is the only one of the three that is close to dry and still cool enough to climb at 3 p.m.: 2.0 wet days, a 79.0°F afternoon and light on the hillside until 9:04 p.m.
The last word
Buy the palace slot for the first hour of the day and let June’s long evening do the rest. The Cultural Landscape of Sintra went on the UNESCO list in 1995 under three criteria, and the property runs to 946 hectares with a buffer zone of 3,641 more, all of it inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and classified as a National Monument. Two days at the pace above reach six of the eleven parks and monuments Parques de Sintra manages. Queluz, Peninha and the Cabo da Roca lighthouse are the three to add on a third.
