KINGSTON · DECEMBER · 17.997° N
Kingston in December is a city for walking. Afternoons average 82.5°F. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust lists about forty heritage sites in Kingston alone, from the Port Royal forts at the tip of the harbor to the monuments of National Heroes Park downtown. Pack for a capital of churches, theaters and Jamaica Georgian façades, and plan the trip around your feet more than a beach towel.
November brings rain on 7.4 days in an average year, and December on 3.9, while the afternoon cools by less than a degree. You give up a little sea warmth for that (85.6°F down to 83.5°F), and you get a 5:35 pm sunset that sets the shape of every day.

Every figure here comes from one model grid cell at 17.997°N, laid over Kingston itself on the sheltered south coast, the island’s driest side. It describes the capital, not Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios on the coasts where most resorts sit. If Kingston is one stop on a longer trip, our best-time guide covers the whole island and the ten-day itinerary shows where the capital fits.
Kingston weather in December: average highs, lows and rain days

Open-Meteo computes the normals below from ECMWF’s ERA5 reanalysis, a weather model rather than a thermometer, averaged over 1991 to 2020 for the grid cell over Kingston. A model cell can drift from an airport station’s reading, most often on the overnight low. With that caveat, December averages a high of 82.5°F (28.1°C) and a low of 72.0°F (22.2°C), with 1.84 inches of rain across the whole month.
Measurable rain, 0.10 inch or more, falls on 3.9 days in an average December: about one day in eight. A day with an inch or more averages 0.3, so a real soaking turns up roughly once every three Decembers. Put one indoor stop into each day, such as the Institute of Jamaica, so a shower changes the order of your visits and leaves the plan standing.
Afternoon and dawn sit 10.5°F apart, 82.5°F against 72.0°F. That spread lets you dress for one climate: breathable cotton or linen by day, closed shoes for fort ramparts and church steps, and one light long-sleeve layer for air-conditioned interiors and evenings outdoors. Our Jamaica packing list covers the rest of the bag.
On December 15 Kingston gets about 11 hours 06 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 6:29 am and sets at 5:35 pm local time, five hours behind UTC, and twilight ends soon after. Start outdoor sightseeing around 7 am and plan to be at dinner, or back at your hotel, not long after sunset.
Can you swim in Kingston in December? Sea temperature
Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Kingston at 83.5°F in December, averaged over 2015 to 2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so a 24-hour average would sit a shade lower. The same series gives 85.6°F for November and 82.1°F for January.
In practice, water in the low 80s feels warm on entry for most swimmers, and nobody needs a wetsuit for a long swim. An early-morning dip will run a little under the 83.5°F peak. We have no beach or water-quality data for the harbor itself, so for a swim day look to our south coast guide or plan a night in Port Antonio.
Our sources carry no wind or swell series for Kingston in December, so we cannot say how often the sea turns choppy. Check a marine forecast the evening before any boat trip or beach day, and ask your hotel which stretch of shore it recommends that week.
How busy is Kingston in December? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate data for Kingston, so we rank no month as cheap or expensive. What we can place is the weather: December follows November’s 7.4 rain days with 3.9, and our best-time guide sets that against the island’s seasons. For a whole-trip budget, the Jamaica trip-cost guide prices rooms, food and transport.
Without booking-curve data we can’t give a lead time in weeks. For a December trip, price the flight and the Kingston room together, compare them against the same dates in January, and hold a refundable rate while your dates may still move. Our US flights guide lists the routes, and the airport-transfer guide covers the ride into town.
We could not verify the lodging-tax rate for Kingston, so we give no percentage. Ask the property whether its nightly quote includes tax and service charge before you book, and keep the answer in writing.
If one line of the budget deserves more money this month, make it a driver for the day you pair Port Royal with downtown. The sites spread from the harbor to the city’s eastern edge, the sun sets at 5:35 pm, and we could not find published opening hours for any of them. A driver who knows the week’s hours protects a short day. Our getting-around guide compares drivers, taxis and buses.
Things to do in Kingston in December

December pairs a 72.0°F dawn with 3.9 rain days. November runs warmer and wetter (73.6°F and 7.4 days), and January only edges it on dryness (70.9°F and 2.7 days). Mornings this month suit the open-air half of Kingston: the forts, the parks and the downtown façades, walked before the afternoon reaches 82.5°F.
Fort Charles, the first fort built at Port Royal, went up in the late 1650s, and Fort Carlisle, Fort Morgan and Fort Rocky followed. Port Royal was called “the richest and wickedest city in the world” until the 1692 earthquake, which destroyed the original St. Peter’s Church. At Kingston’s eastern edge, Rockfort was fortified in 1694 against a feared French invasion from Santo Domingo. Downtown, the Ward Theatre, a 1912 gift from Colonel Charles Ward, stands on St. William Grant Park, and National Heroes Park holds dated monuments from Marcus Garvey’s (1964) to Nanny of the Maroons’ (dedicated October 14, 1999).
At 72.0°F around sunrise and 82.5°F by afternoon, December splits the sightseeing day in two. Port Royal and National Heroes Park belong to the morning, while interiors such as the Institute of Jamaica and Holy Trinity Cathedral fit the warm middle hours. With 1.84 inches of rain for the month against November’s 3.40, fewer of those mornings get cut short.
We could not verify admission fees for any Kingston site, so we label none free. Several Jamaica Georgian buildings face public streets: the two-story house at 150 East Street, one of the few of its design left in the city, and Kingston Railway Station, built on a grand scale along the same lines. Wesley Methodist Church, erected in 1825, predates them both. Seeing their façades from the sidewalk costs nothing but the walk.
Kingston in December: a two-day itinerary
Day one covers the harbor. Leave around 6:30 am, just after the 6:29 sunrise, to reach Port Royal while the air sits near its 72.0°F low, and give Fort Charles the morning until about 11 am. Stop at Rockfort on the way back into town. Spend the warmest hours, roughly noon to 3 pm, at the Institute of Jamaica, founded in 1879 under Governor Sir Anthony Musgrave. From 3:30 pm walk National Heroes Park and finish before the 5:35 pm sunset. Confirm each site’s hours the day before, since we could not find them published.
Day two stays downtown on foot. Start at 7 am at the Ward Theatre, then walk to Kingston Parish Church, erected around 1911 on the original foundations, the 1907 Earthquake Monument and the façade at 150 East Street. After lunch, visit Holy Trinity Cathedral, built in 1911 in the Byzantine-revival style. Trench Town Culture Yard, one of the Central Housing Authority houses of 1940 to 1949, fits a guided visit (read our safety guide first). If rain arrives on one of December’s 3.9 wet days, take the cathedral first and move the street walk to whichever half of the day clears.
Kingston in December vs November and January
| Kingston | November | December | January |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 83.4°F | 82.5°F | 82.1°F |
| Average low | 73.6°F | 72.0°F | 70.9°F |
| Precipitation | 3.40 in | 1.84 in | 1.12 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 7.4 | 3.9 | 2.7 |
| Sea surface (daily max) | 85.6°F | 83.5°F | 82.1°F |
Afternoon highs barely move across the three months: 83.4°F in November, 82.5°F in December, 82.1°F in January. Nights cool more, from 73.6°F to 72.0°F to 70.9°F. Rain falls away fastest, from 3.40 inches over 7.4 days to 1.84 inches over 3.9 days, then 1.12 inches over 2.7 days. On Open-Meteo’s Marine API, the sea eases from 85.6°F to 83.5°F to 82.1°F.
Move four weeks earlier and you gain 2.1°F of sea warmth, but you nearly double the rain days (7.4 against 3.9), and November sits inside the season dated in our hurricane-season guide. Move four weeks later and you lose 1.4°F of sea and 1.1°F off the nightly low, while gaining 1.2 fewer rain days. Kingston in November and Kingston in January give each month in full.
Is December a good time to visit Kingston?
Yes, if your Kingston trip is about history, music heritage and walking the city: 3.9 rain days, a 72.0°F start and a 5:35 pm sunset make for full mornings and early dinners. No, if you came to Jamaica for a beach week. Every figure here describes the south-coast cell over Kingston, and the resort beaches of Montego Bay and Negril sit on other coasts with their own weather.
If December doesn’t suit your dates or your tolerance for showers, pick January. It averages 1.12 inches of rain on 2.7 days, the driest of the three months, and its 70.9°F low makes the early fort visits cooler still. The trade is a sea at 82.1°F, 1.4°F under December’s.
December is the month when Kingston’s rain count nearly halves, from November’s 7.4 days to 3.9, while the sea still reaches 83.5°F at its daily peak.
The last word
Book the Port Royal morning first and fit the rest of the trip around a 5:35 pm sunset. Then keep a final afternoon downtown for Liberty Hall, once the center of activities for the Kingston division of Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association, and for Edna Manley’s sculpture Negro Aroused, created in 1935 and now a declared national monument. Two stops, one short walk apart in spirit, and the capital’s twentieth century comes into focus.
