Crete in November: Weather, Crowds and What to Do

November in Crete is a quiet, mild month made for old towns, ruins, mountain roads and long lunches. The summer crowds are gone, the cities settle back into a local rhythm, and the island gets sunny spells, a few showers and plenty of room to wander.

What is the weather like in Crete in November?

Crete weather from October to December (long-term averages)
Month Average high Average low Sea Rainfall Sunshine per day
October 75°F (24°C) 63°F (17°C) 73°F (23°C) 2.2 in (55 mm) 6.9 h
November 68°F (20°C) 57°F (14°C) 68°F (20°C) 2.5 in (63 mm) 4.9 h
December 62°F (17°C) 52°F (11°C) 64°F (18°C) 3.8 in (96 mm) 3.7 h

The weather is mild but changeable. Some days still feel like summer, while others lean toward winter. Midday is often warm enough for sightseeing in a T-shirt. Evenings turn noticeably cooler once the sun drops, and later in the month you may want the heating on in your room. The days are shorter than in summer, and showers become more common as the month goes on.

Rain usually arrives as short showers or the occasional storm. Keep your schedule flexible so you can swap a hike for a museum when the sky turns. The mountains create strong local differences, so the weather in one valley may not match the coast.

For the warmest, sunniest conditions, head to the south and southeast coasts, where the central mountain ranges can shelter the shore from some northerly weather. Ierapetra, Matala and Paleochora often catch pleasant sunny spells, though wind and showers can still roll in.

The sea is the pleasant surprise. It stays mild enough for a quick dip on a calm, sunny day, and the beaches are close to empty, so you may have a whole bay to yourself. Wind and clouds change the picture fast, so treat swimming as a bonus.

How does November compare with October and December?

October is warmer, sunnier and drier, with an even warmer sea, which makes it the better pick if swimming matters to you. November is the middle ground: mild for sightseeing, with more clouds and showers. December brings cooler, shorter and wetter days.

Within November itself, the first half tends to be warmer, and temperatures slip as the month ends. If your dates are flexible, aim for early November.

Is November a good time to visit Crete?

November works well if your idea of a good trip is built around museums, meals, landscapes and an unhurried pace. The larger towns of Chania, Heraklion and Rethymno stay lively year-round. In Chania, the Venetian harbor, the lighthouse and the colorful old town feel much calmer than in high summer, and the cafes and restaurants in the center still welcome locals as well as visitors.

Resort areas are much quieter. Many seasonal beach hotels, beach bars and boat excursions close or run reduced schedules. Elounda is a luxury resort area with views of the lagoon and the island fortress of Spinalonga, but November is low season there, so confirm that your hotel, restaurants and boat trips are open before you book.

Where you stay matters more now than in summer. Staying in a town that stays lively all year gives you a wider choice of places to eat, ways to get around and things to do on a rainy day. Whatever property you pick, confirm it is open for your exact dates and ask whether its restaurant and pool will be running.

What is there to do in Crete in November?

Culture and food lead the list. The cooler weather lets you explore the Palace of Knossos without the midday heat, and the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion adds rich context on Minoan Crete. In Chania, wander the old lanes and museums. In Rethymno, walk up to the Fortezza above the city. A road trip to the Lasithi Plateau combines mountain scenery and villages with a stop at the Dikteon Cave, traditionally linked to the birth of Zeus.

November overlaps with the olive harvest, which makes the countryside around Archanes, just south of Heraklion, especially interesting, with its traditional architecture and wineries. A Cretan cooking class is also a nice idea this month, with dishes centered on local olive oil, cheese, wild greens, herbs and slow-cooked meat.

Hikers should plan shorter routes and lower trails. The Samaria Gorge offers about 10 miles (16 km) of hiking through a biosphere reserve, but its season normally runs from May into October, so plan on other walks in November. Richtis Gorge in eastern Crete makes a lovely alternative, with lush greenery and waterfalls, though the trail turns slick after rain, so go when conditions look dry and settled.

The beaches make fine places for a long walk or a scenic drive. Falassarna's wide shoreline is ideal for a coastal stroll, and Vai, with its palm grove and broad sandy bay, rewards a road trip across eastern Crete. At Balos, the regular summer boat schedule no longer applies, so check road and weather conditions locally if you plan to drive and hike in.

What should you pack for Crete in November?

Layers. Pack a couple of T-shirts for sunny afternoons, plus a sweater or light jacket for the evenings and a waterproof outer layer for showers. Bring comfortable walking shoes with real grip, since trails get slippery after rain and sandals alone won't cut it. Tuck in a swimsuit for that occasional calm, sunny day.

How do you get to and around Crete in November?

Most travelers arrive at Heraklion Airport or Chania Airport. Direct international flights are fewer outside summer, so many trips connect through Athens.

A rental car is a practical way to see the island, since public transport runs less often on some routes, and it lets you change plans when the weather shifts. Greece has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the European Union, and talking or texting on a phone while driving is illegal. After heavy rain, give yourself extra time on mountain roads, and don't assume remote beach roads are passable after a storm.

What do Americans need to enter Greece?

U.S. citizens may enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and you should be ready to show proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket if asked. A passport previously reported lost or stolen will not be accepted for entry, so travel on a valid, current one.

Is Crete safe to visit in November?

Greece is a generally safe destination. Strikes and demonstrations are common, though, and transportation strikes can interrupt taxis, seaports and airports, sometimes with little notice, so build some slack into your plans. Petty crime is common in popular tourist spots, and thieves are known to break into rental cars to steal passports, valuables and luggage, so it is wise to keep belongings with you.
