Orlando boarded 27,859,783 the same year. That gap is why plenty of trips to a Spanish colonial town on the Atlantic begin with a rental car in Central Florida instead.
Departure day deserves the same attention as arrival. Neither a drive time nor a mileage for those routes sits in our verified sources, which means the live estimate you pull on the morning of your flight beats any average you could read anywhere. Booking the car before you fly, and knowing which airport you are returning it to, does more for the last day than clever routing.

St. Augustine holds two of Florida’s eleven National Park Service units, and that spread is the practical case for wheels: Castillo de San Marcos in the middle of the historic district, Fort Matanzas down the coast. Neither carries the National Park designation, which in Florida belongs only to Biscayne, Dry Tortugas and the Everglades. For a first visit that adds up to a town you cross on foot and two or three drives you cannot skip, which is where the three-day plan begins.
Jacksonville airport to St. Augustine
Jacksonville International, JAX, is the nearest large airport to St. Augustine: a medium hub in the FAA’s classification, with 3,749,791 passengers boarded in calendar year 2024. It lies north of the city, and the link between the two is a stretch of I-95 with your hands on the wheel. Nothing about the geometry is complicated. The variable is traffic, and the variable is why no single number belongs on the trip.
A hub of that size is not a place where every American city has a nonstop. We have not verified a route list for JAX, and airlines redraw them by season, so read your own carrier’s map for your home airport rather than assume a direct flight exists. When the fare from your city lands near Orlando’s, JAX tends to win on the ground, because the driving comes off the far end of the vacation. No scheduled bus or train linking JAX with St. Augustine appears in our verified sources, and we have no priced shuttle to offer either. Treat the rental as part of the ticket: reserve it with the flight, and ask for a child seat at booking rather than at the counter, where availability is somebody else’s problem by then. Then think about where the car will sleep, because a base in the historic district turns it into gear you touch twice rather than daily transport.
Orlando airport to St. Augustine
Orlando International boarded 27,859,783 passengers in 2024, against 3,749,791 at Jacksonville. MCO is the busiest airport in the state, and that volume reads as choice: more carriers, nonstops from more American cities, and fares that often undercut the smaller field up north. On paper the argument for flying into Orlando is a good one.
The bill comes due on the road. Orlando sits inland and well south of St. Augustine, so the choice adds a drive back up the peninsula at the tail of a flying day, part of it on toll roads where the transponder question our getting-around guide settles is worth raising at the rental desk. We are not going to put a figure on the mileage or the minutes, because neither one is in our verified set.
Two cases still make it pencil out. If the trip already includes the Orlando parks, MCO is exactly where it belongs, and the coast becomes the quiet half of the week. And an open-jaw booking, in at MCO and out of JAX, converts the detour into a one-way drive instead of a round trip, the same trick our Florida road trip guide applies across the state.
Duration is the thing we cannot hand you. No verified drive time for either route sits in our reading, and the variables are real ones: I-95 through Jacksonville at commuter hour, and summer afternoons. Every climate figure here comes from NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for station USW00013889, which is Jacksonville International itself, and in July that station logs 6.77 inches of rain across 9.9 days with at least a tenth of an inch. Those storms build after lunch and do not consult your arrival time.
Is St. Augustine on Eastern time?
Yes. The line that decides the question in Florida is the Apalachicola River: under 49 CFR 71.5(f), everything east of it keeps Eastern time, which puts St. Augustine on the same clock as Orlando, Tampa and Miami. Only the western Panhandle runs on Central, and no part of a St. Augustine trip crosses into it unless you keep driving to Pensacola.
It matters most on an evening arrival out of a Central-time city, where the clock jumps forward while you fly. Land at dusk and the two attractions with gates are already done for the day: last admission at Castillo de San Marcos is 5:00 p.m., with everyone out by 5:15 p.m., and the St. Augustine Lighthouse sells its final ticket at 5:30 p.m. from October 1 through February 28. Both open at 9:00 a.m., so a late landing costs nothing if the morning was the plan.
Do you need a car in St. Augustine?
Not for the historic district. The old town is a walking proposition, and Castillo de San Marcos stands in the middle of it: $15 for adults aged 16 and above, valid seven consecutive days, free for children 15 and under with an adult along. First admission is 9:00 a.m., seven days a week except Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Park Service notes the fort is built of coquina because it was the only local stone the Spanish had.
The beach changes the answer. St. Augustine’s sand lies across the water on A1A, with no verified transit link in our sources, so a beach afternoon means the car, a ride you pay for, or a hotel already on that side. The lighthouse sits over there too, its 1874 tower open to climbers who manage it under their own power, with children under 44 inches restricted from going up. Florida’s flags rule the swim: double red closes the water, red high hazard, yellow medium, green low, purple for dangerous marine life.
Parking downtown is where our reading ran out. We could not verify a rate for public parking in the historic district, on-street or in a garage, so no figure goes here: ask your hotel whether a space is included, and check the City of St. Augustine’s parking pages before you drive in. Budget the lodging tax at the same time, since St. Johns County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax filed with the 6% state sales tax, a line our where-to-stay guide builds in.
Keep the keys for Fort Matanzas. The coquina watchtower was completed in 1742 to defend the southern approach to the Spanish settlement, and everything there is free, the ferry included. The free boarding pass comes from the Fort Matanzas Visitor Center, not the city visitor center, and every family member of any age needs one. Ferry service runs October 1 to September 30; the daily departure times were not readable at the source, so ask when you collect the passes. Groups with luggage, families needing a car seat, and the wider day trips all argue for a car.
Heading back north, give yourself more room than the map suggests. With no verified drive time to lean on, pull a live estimate the morning of departure and add margin for I-95 through Jacksonville in weekday commuter hours. A last-morning fort visit only works with an afternoon flight, given that 9:00 a.m. opening. Taxis and rideshare to St. Augustine
On price, we come up empty. No verified meter rate, no flat fare, no Uber or Lyft estimate from JAX or MCO to St. Augustine sits in our sources, and the rates posted at the airport curb were not readable when we checked. That is a gap in our reading rather than proof the numbers are unknowable, and it means any firm figure quoted to you months ahead is guessing at traffic and surge for a ride of that length.
Three places carry the real answer. The airport’s own ground transportation page names which curb the taxis and the rideshare pickups use, and what the taxis are authorized to charge. The app gives an up-front quote for your actual pickup time, the only number that applies to a 11 p.m. arrival. A hotel can usually name a car service, which matters when you need a child seat, since a rideshare driver is not obliged to carry one.
