Porto in July: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Ticket Prices

July hands Porto its driest month of the year and its longest evenings. The national weather service logs 0.65 inch of rain for the whole month, an average high of 75.7°F, and on July 15 the sun stays up 14 hours 54 minutes, setting at 9:07 p.m. Granite that spends the winter slick and dark is warm underfoot by noon, and dinner on the Ribeira starts in full daylight.

What the month takes back is the water and the quiet. The Atlantic off the city averages 63.5°F at the surface, colder than June’s, and July sits inside the year’s busiest stretch. Porto in July is a walking, eating, late-light city rather than a beach one.

Porto’s official normals are read at Pedras Rubras, IPMA station 545, an instrument at 67.7 m on the coastal plain north of the city rather than a model cell drawn over the Douro. Porto weather in July: average highs, lows and rain days

The July figures come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, over the 1991-2020 period: average high 75.7°F, average low 59.9°F, 0.65 inch of rain for the entire month. That is a thermometer reading at station 545, Pedras Rubras, 67.7 m above sea level, not a reanalysis grid cell. On a coast where the ocean sits a few miles west of the old town, the difference between the two kinds of product is worth knowing before you trust a decimal.

Rain, when it comes, is brief. An average July records 3.1 days with at least 1 mm, which IPMA counts as 0.04 inch, and 0.5 day reaching 0.39 inch or more, so a genuine downpour lands about every second summer. One caution before you set these beside an American table: US climate summaries usually count days at 0.10 inch, a higher bar, and the two counts are not interchangeable.

The day-to-night spread runs close to 16 degrees, from 75.7°F in the afternoon to 59.9°F before dawn. A linen shirt at 9 p.m. on the quay is optimistic by roughly one layer, and the same bag has to cover a 3 p.m. climb up a granite staircase with no shade on it. Our packing guide takes the rest.

Light is the month’s real currency. On July 15 the sun rises at 06:13 and sets at 21:07 local time, 14 hours 54 minutes apart, and Porto eats late enough to use all of it. The Clérigos Tower pushes its closing from 19:00 to 23:00 in summer, which turns the climb into the last thing of the day instead of a midday errand.

Can you swim in Porto in July? Sea temperature at 63.5°F

The sea surface off Porto averages 63.5°F in July, from Open-Meteo’s marine series across 2015 to 2024. Read the number carefully: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. Water at eight in the morning runs under the headline.

In practice that is a swim, not an afternoon in the water. With air at 75.7°F and the Atlantic twelve degrees behind it, the first minute is sharp and the exit is welcome. Children last less than adults, and the surf schools on the city beaches north of the Douro mouth rent wetsuits for reasons that have nothing to do with upselling.

On wind and swell, we have nothing measured to give you. Check a marine forecast the morning you go, and treat the northerly summer wind as local knowledge rather than a published normal.

How busy is Porto in July? Crowds, prices and the EUR 3 tourist tax

July and August are the two driest months of Porto’s year, 0.65 and 1.15 inches against June’s 1.33, and demand tracks the sunshine. We do not publish a hotel price index for Porto, so there is no percentage figure here and none invented. What is public and fixed is what the city charges per night and what the doors cost, and both are listed below in euros. Our Portugal trip cost page handles the wider budget.

Booking pressure shows up at the doors more than on the calendar. Palácio da Bolsa cannot be walked alone: the 30-minute guided tour is mandatory and the language is assigned in order of arrival, in Portuguese, Spanish, French or English, so arriving solo at a busy hour can mean waiting for an English slot. Livraria Lello requires a ticket even from someone who only means to buy a book.

The city’s Taxa Municipal Turística adds EUR 3 per person, per overnight stay, charged per head rather than per room, and capped at seven consecutive nights. A two-week stay therefore tops out at EUR 21 each. Children of 12 and under are exempt, as are stays for medical treatment and visitors with a disability of 60 percent or more, and those last two exemptions extend to two companions each, on proof.

The one line where spending a little more changes a hot July day is transit. A Z2 title covering central Porto costs EUR 1.40 for an hour, ten plus one free cost EUR 14.00, and the Andante Tour 1 runs 24 hours for EUR 7.50, which pays off from the sixth ride of a single day. Tour 3 covers 72 hours for EUR 16.00. Fares climb by zone to EUR 4.10 at Z8. We could not confirm at source which zone the airport falls in, so check the zone at the departure station, as the operator itself advises.

Things to do in Porto in July: hours and ticket prices

Summer buys hours that winter locks away. Palácio da Bolsa runs its April-to-October timetable, 09:00 to 18:30 straight through, while from November to March the same palace closes for lunch and shuts at 17:30, giving a winter afternoon of three and a half hours instead of nine. The Clérigos Tower opens daily at 09:00 and holds until 23:00 in summer, against a 19:00 close the rest of the year.

Prices, plainly. Livraria Lello charges EUR 15.95 to walk in, open every day 09:00 to 19:30, and the ticket works as a voucher deducted from any book bought from Lello’s own editions. None of its annual closures (January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, June 24 for São João, December 25) falls in July. Serralves asks EUR 24 for the general ticket covering museum, Siza Wing, park, Treetop Walk, villa and House of Cinema, or EUR 15 for the park alone. Palácio da Bolsa is EUR 14, or EUR 9.50 for students, schools and seniors.

Free in July comes with fine print. Children under 12 enter Serralves at no charge, as do Amigos de Serralves members and visitors with reduced mobility, and a Porto Card or Youth Card halves the ticket. Under-12s also enter the Bolsa free with an adult, outside children’s groups. Serralves’ free first Sunday is a residents’ benefit: it needs a Portuguese Citizen Card or Resident Card, is sold at the box office only, and a visitor from abroad still pays EUR 24 that day.

Porto in July: two-day itinerary and 9 p.m. sunset times

Day one runs early, then hides. Be at Lello for the 09:00 opening (EUR 15.95, ticket in hand before the door). Climb Clérigos by ten, while the stone is still cool. Take the Bolsa’s mandatory 30-minute tour around noon (EUR 14) and let the palace absorb the hottest stretch, since it stays open to 18:30 in July. Come back out at seven for the riverfront, and hold dinner until the sun goes down at 21:07.

Day two belongs to the west: Serralves park in the morning at EUR 15, or EUR 24 for the whole estate, then out to the coast and a short swim at 63.5°F if you can face it. When one of the 3.1 wet days lands instead, the indoor hours are unusually long this month, with the Bolsa to 18:30, Lello to 19:30 and the tower to 23:00. A day in the Douro Valley sits well outside the Andante zone scale and needs its own planning.

Porto in July vs June and August

Across the three months the air climbs and the water goes the other way: highs of 72.9°F, 75.7°F and 76.6°F, against sea surface readings of 64.8°F in June, 63.5°F in July and 62.5°F in August. Rain is where July separates itself, at 0.65 inch versus 1.33 and 1.15. All three rain-day counts come from the same IPMA station and the same 0.04 inch threshold, so the days compare as directly as the inches do.

Shifting four weeks either way is a trade, not an upgrade. June gives the warmest sea of the summer and takes double the rain. August gives 0.9 degrees more heat and one thing July cannot offer: from August 3 to September 30, Monday to Thursday, Serralves sells a late-afternoon ticket from 17:00 with last admission at 19:00, EUR 15 for visitors from abroad, covering museum, park, villa and House of Cinema.

Is July a good time to visit Porto?

For a city trip, yes, and comfortably. Three wet days out of thirty-one, highs that stop at 75.7°F rather than punishing you, and usable light until 9:07 p.m. add up to an evening of sightseeing that October simply does not sell. For a beach holiday, or for anyone hoping to pay off-season rates, the month works against you on both counts.

If the water decides the trip, June is the better of the three at 64.8°F, bought with 1.33 inches of rain and highs 2.8 degrees lower. If long museum evenings matter more, August opens the Serralves late ticket that July does not have. What July holds alone among the three is dryness: 0.65 inch of rain, half of June’s total and well under August’s 1.15.

The last word

Book July for the light and the dry granite, not for the swimming, and arrange the days so the heat lands indoors: the Bolsa’s mandatory tour at noon, the tower at eleven at night. One small purchase on arrival saves a scene at the machine. The reusable Andante Azul card costs EUR 0.60 and holds only one kind of title at a time, so a Z2 city title and a Z3 hop cannot share it. Buy two cards, EUR 1.20, and stop thinking about it.
