A thatched roof, a deck over the sand, a plunge pool catching the light off the Caribbean: this is how a luxury stay in Belize often begins. Others begin in the hills, with waterfalls tumbling into turquoise pools above the jungle canopy. Belize’s high-end resorts spread from private islands and beach villages to rainforest lodges, and the choice is mostly a question of which Belize you want to wake up in.

What are the luxury resorts in Belize?
They are a handful of small, design-minded properties, mostly thatched and open to the air, set on a private island, on the beach, beside a river or high in a mountain reserve. Several are tied to well-known names: Francis Ford Coppola bought Blancaneaux Lodge in the early 1980s, and he and Eleanor Coppola found the stretch of beach where Turtle Inn stands in 2001. Others, such as the Lodge at Chaa Creek, grew from the idea of an eco-resort.
What they share is scale. Turtle Inn has 28 dwellings, Blancaneaux 20 rooms, and Matachica 33 casitas and villas. These are places where staff learn your name, not large hotels with lobbies and conference rooms.
Island and beach names
Cayo Espanto is the most exclusive idea on the list, an ultra-luxury private island resort. Its premium villas are seafront, on the beach and have private pools, and dining is all-inclusive, with cuisine tailored to each guest’s tastes. The resort has been nominated in the Best Private Island Resort category of the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2025.
On Ambergris Caye, Matachica Resort and Spa is adult-only, with thatched casitas and villas, while Victoria House Resort and Spa sits on the east side of the island facing the Caribbean. Itz’ana Belize Resort and Residences and Turtle Inn bring the same beachfront approach to Placencia, one with villas and penthouses, the other with open-air dwellings furnished in hand-carved Balinese wood.
Lodges inland
Inland, luxury takes a greener shape. Blancaneaux Lodge has thatched roof rooms with Guatemalan décor in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, and guests can explore the ancient Maya civilization from its remote mountain setting. Ka’ana Resort in San Ignacio offers Signature Villas tucked into the jungle of western Belize, in the Cayo District.
The Lodge at Chaa Creek, founded in 1981 as one of Belize’s first eco-resorts, stands on the banks of the Macal River. Its range runs from the rustic Belize Rainforest Retreat to the Ix Chel Luxury Rainforest Villas with private Jacuzzis and plunge pools. Five percent of room revenue goes to environmental and community projects through Chaa Creek Cares, and its Pack-a-Pound program provides personal school supplies to Belizean children who need them.
Where are they?
They cluster in four places: the cayes off the coast, the Placencia peninsula in the Stann Creek District, the Cayo District in the west, and the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve. Each setting gives a different stay, and many travelers pair two of them.
Ambergris Caye and Cayo Espanto
Ambergris Caye is the largest of about 200 cayes off the Belize coast, 25 miles long and just over a mile wide in some places, in the Caribbean Sea off the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. Victoria House has its address on Coconut Drive in San Pedro, with a private beach on the east side of the island and bicycles, kayaks and paddleboards for guests.
Matachica lies on the northern part of the caye, where guests can snorkel vivid reefs just steps from their casita. Cayo Espanto is a separate case, a private island just three miles off the coast of San Pedro, so the stay is defined by being alone on your own island with the town in view.
The Placencia peninsula
Turtle Inn sits on a beach at the end of the Placencia peninsula. Placencia itself is a fishing village, and the shore leads to it by a short walk or bicycle ride, which means dinner in the village and a stroll home along the sand.
Itz’ana is also in Placencia, at Mile 20 Placencia Road, with a pristine white-sand beach on the Caribbean Sea. Its Marina Villas stand just steps from the marina, while the Beach Villas look straight out over the water.
San Ignacio, the Macal River and the Pine Ridge
Ka’ana Resort sits at the doorstep of the Maya site of Xunantunich, so ruins and a pool can share a single day. Chaa Creek lies on the Macal River in western Belize, a lodge where the river and forest are the main scenery.
Blancaneaux Lodge is farther up, in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, where waterfalls tumble into turquoise pools above the jungle canopy. Chaa Creek also offers combined beach and rainforest packages with partner resorts at Ambergris Caye and Placencia. Matachica has a sister property, GAÏA River Lodge, and combining stays at both is recommended.
What do they offer?
Beyond the room, the offer is food, spa time, water and a guided look at the landscape around each property. The details vary by resort, so it helps to match what each includes to what you want from the stay.
Rooms, pools and private space
Plunge pools are a recurring feature. Matachica’s Seafront Luxury Suites have a private terrace with a plunge pool, Itz’ana’s Beach Villas are multi-bedroom with kitchens, decks and plunge pools, and its penthouses add terraces or beach decks with views of the sea and the Maya jungle. Victoria House offers Casitas, Palmetto Rooms, Suites and Villas, and its outdoor pools are infinity-edged.
For groups, Matachica’s Seabreeze Luxury Villa suits adult families or small groups, and Itz’ana’s Marina Villas offer spacious accommodations for families or longer stays. Ka’ana’s one-, two- and three-bedroom Signature Villas serve the same purpose in the jungle.
Food, drink and spa
Victoria House runs two restaurants: Palmilla for fine dining and Admiral Nelson’s Beach Bar for something more casual and lively. At Matachica, the Mambo Bistro serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Danny’s Tree Bar serves cocktails. At Cayo Espanto, dining is all-inclusive.
Spa menus lean on place. Jade Spa at Matachica uses locally sourced papaya, banana and coffee in its treatments, Cayo Espanto brings massages, facials and spa therapies to the guest’s private oasis, and Ka’ana’s Ool Spa offers relaxation therapy in a natural setting. Ka’ana also runs wellness retreats built around tranquility and organic gardens.
Included extras and outings
Itz’ana’s welcome includes a minibar, a cheese board and a bottle of wine on arrival. Guests receive two complimentary massages and a fishing session on the lagoon, and kids up to 14 years old stay free with breakfast included.
Inland, Ka’ana Adventures arranges excursions to ancient Maya sites, cave paddling and birdwatching in the forests of western Belize, and the resort teaches a Maya cooking class in which guests prepare traditional dishes. Booking directly with Ka’ana includes a lowest rate guarantee, free Wi-Fi and continental breakfast for two guests, and its best available rate is listed at $214.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, which matters for anyone planning a coastal or island stay in those months. Resort details such as included meals, spa treatments and children’s policies differ from one property to the next, so read what each one includes before choosing. Ka’ana can be reached on WhatsApp at +501 (614) 8185.
