Porto in April: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Prices

April is the month Porto’s opening hours change gear. The Palácio da Bolsa drops its winter lunch break from April onward and runs 09:00 to 18:30 straight through, and by mid-month the sun is still up at 8:16 p.m. The weather is less obliging than the calendar: the official April normal at Porto Pedras Rubras is 64.6°F by day, 50.2°F at night, and 3.76 inches of rain.

That mix, mild days and real rain, shapes the whole trip. April in Porto is a walking city with an indoor backup plan attached, and the beach stays theoretical: the water off the city averages 60.8°F. Against March it wins light and two degrees; against May it gives up nearly four degrees on the thermometer and a third of an inch of extra rain.

Porto weather in April: 64.6°F days, 50.2°F nights, 10.4 wet days

Those normals come from IPMA, the Portuguese weather service, station 545 at Porto Pedras Rubras, a thermometer sitting at 67.7 m, averaged over 1991 to 2020. That matters more than it sounds: a station normal and a reanalysis grid cell are different animals, and plenty of April figures floating around for Porto are the second kind. Ours is the first.

The rain count needs its own footnote. IPMA logs 10.4 days at 0.04 inch or more and 3.4 days at 0.39 inch or more, which are the service’s own thresholds rather than the 0.10-inch line most American tables use, so the counts are not interchangeable. In practice: about one April day in three registers something, and roughly one in nine delivers enough to end an outdoor plan.

The gap between 64.6°F and 50.2°F is 14.4 degrees, and it lands at both ends of the day. A morning on the Clérigos steps at 8 a.m. and an aperitif by the Douro at 9 p.m. both want a real layer, while 2 p.m. on a granite street can feel ten degrees warmer than the number. Light is April’s quiet luxury. On April 15 Porto gets 13 hours 23 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 6:52 a.m. and sunset at 8:16 p.m. local time, the clocks having gone forward to UTC+1. Dinner at eight still happens in daylight, which no month before March can offer.

Can you swim in Porto in April? The sea sits at 60.8°F

The sea surface off Porto averages 60.8°F in April, from the Open-Meteo Marine dataset over 2015 to 2024. One nuance travels with that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade above what a straight 24-hour mean would give. Whatever you touch at 8 a.m. is cooler than 60.8°F.

Sixty degrees of Atlantic is a gasp, then a countdown. Without neoprene you get a plunge measured in minutes, and children lose interest faster than adults do. Surfers and bodyboarders are out on the Foz beaches all month, and every one of them is wearing a wetsuit. If swimming is the point of the trip, April is not the month, and the Algarve is not much warmer this early.

On wind and swell we have nothing measured. No April normal for coastal wind speed or wave height at Porto was readable at source, so we publish none rather than round one off. The coast is exposed Atlantic year round, and the beach cafés at Matosinhos keep their windbreaks up for a reason.

How busy is Porto in April? Crowds, prices and the EUR 3 city tax

April sits on the ramp between low season and high, and the operators mark it themselves. The Palácio da Bolsa switches to its April to October timetable, 09:00 to 18:30 with no lunch closure, after five months of 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30. Serralves runs its late-afternoon EUR 15 ticket only between August 3 and September 30, so April pays the full rate.

Easter is the swing factor, and it moves year to year. When Easter week falls inside April, the central hotels and the Douro day trips fill first; when it lands in March, the month stays comfortably bookable. Then there is the Taxa Municipal Turística: EUR 3 per overnight stay, charged per person and not per room, capped at seven consecutive nights. Children of 12 and under are exempt, as are stays for medical treatment and visitors with a disability of 60 percent or more, the last two extending to two companions each on proof. Two adults and two young children on a week’s stay owe EUR 42, collected at the property.

The one upgrade that changes an April is location. On a wet afternoon, a bed inside the Baixa turns a canceled plan into a five-minute walk to shelter, while a cheaper room across the river turns it into a metro ride. If you do ride, an Andante Azul card costs EUR 0.60, a one-hour Z2 title EUR 1.40, ten titles plus one free EUR 14.00, and a 24-hour Andante Tour EUR 7.50, which pays off past five or six trips in a day.

Things to do in Porto in April: Lello, Clérigos and Serralves, with prices

April unlocks one thing March cannot: a full museum afternoon at the Bolsa. From this month the palace runs 09:00 to 18:30 continuously, where a November to March afternoon there is three and a half hours long with a lunch shutdown in the middle. Over Easter, the Clérigos Tower pushes its closing from 19:00 to 23:00, which is the only stretch of spring when the city can be looked down on after dark.

Livraria Lello: EUR 15.95, open daily 09:00 to 19:30, and the ticket is a voucher whose value comes off any book from Lello’s own editions, though you need one even if books are all you came for. Torre dos Clérigos: daily 09:00 to 19:00. Palácio da Bolsa: EUR 14, EUR 9.50 for students and seniors, with a mandatory 30-minute guided tour whose language is assigned in order of arrival. Serralves: EUR 24 for everything, EUR 15 for the park alone.

What costs nothing: children under 12 enter Serralves free, and go into the Bolsa free when accompanied by an adult outside children’s groups. Be careful with the famous first Sunday of the month at Serralves. Free entry that day requires a Portuguese Citizen Card or Resident Card, is issued at the box office only, and a US passport pays the same EUR 24. A Porto Card or a Youth Card does take 50 percent off.

Porto in April: a two-day itinerary and daylight hours

Day one. Be at the Clérigos Tower for the 09:00 opening, when the stairs are still yours. Cross to Livraria Lello around 10:15, before the middle of the day thickens, and put the EUR 15.95 back into a book. Lunch late, then take the Palácio da Bolsa at 15:00, remembering that the English slot depends on who arrived before you. Finish on the Ribeira quays: sunset is at 8:16 p.m. by mid-month, so the light holds through dinner.

Day two. Metro out to Serralves on a Z2 title at EUR 1.40, park and museum for EUR 24, with the Treetop Walk best done before the afternoon breeze picks up. Come back down to Foz for the ocean and a 60.8°F look at it. If the day turns into one of April’s 10.4 wet ones, invert the plan: interiors in the morning, the park in whatever the sky gives back, and buy the 24-hour Andante Tour at EUR 7.50 so the rain costs a ride rather than a walk.

Porto in April vs March and May: temperature, rain and sea

Read the temperature and the rainfall rows straight: April is 2.0°F warmer by day than March and 3.9°F cooler than May, and its 3.76 inches sit between 3.98 and 3.37. The rain-day row deserves a caveat, since April’s count is published at a 0.04-inch threshold while its neighbors come at 0.10 inch, so those three figures sit side by side rather than compete. The sea reading is the curiosity: April’s 60.8°F edges May’s 60.5°F, a difference small enough to be noise in a ten-year average of daily maxima.

Shifting four weeks forward buys you 3.9 degrees on both the day and the night figure, 0.39 inch less rain and a day and a half fewer wet days, at the cost of a busier, pricier city on its way to summer. Is April a good time to visit Porto?

Yes, if your Porto is granite streets, port lodges, tiled churches and a museum afternoon, with a waterproof in the bag. Sixty-four degrees is the right temperature for a city built on hills, and 13 hours 23 minutes of daylight covers a lot of ground. No, if the trip is built around water. At 60.8°F the Atlantic is a photograph, not a swim, and 10.4 wet days will interrupt at least two plans in a week.

Travelers who want warmth without July should wait for May: 68.5°F days, 8.9 wet days, 3.37 inches. The last word

Book April for the city and treat the coast as a view, and Porto will hold up its end. One last piece of small print before you tap in: the Andante Azul card at EUR 0.60 can only carry one kind of title at a time, so a Z2 for town and a Z3 for a trip out cannot live on the same card. Buy two, or buy the 24-hour Tour, and validate at the station where you start.
