Belize Adults-Only Resorts: Thatch Caye, Matachica, Cayo Espanto and Where to Find Them

Picture a breakfast tray carried along a wooden walkway above the water, mimosas sweating in their glasses, and nobody within earshot but a pelican on a piling. That is the pace of Belize’s grown-up retreats, where thatched roofs, plunge pools and a quiet dock replace the pool-party soundtrack.

What are the adults-only resorts in Belize?

They are small, secluded properties on the Caribbean side of the country where the guest list is limited to adults, and the setting does most of the work: thatch, sea views, a dock, a spa. Three names come up again and again here, Thatch Caye Resort, Matachica Resort and Spa, and Cayo Espanto. Each one is built around privacy, though they go about it in different ways.

Dining, diving, spa treatments and a cocktail at sunset are the real activities. Nobody is hurrying you to a tour bus. The days are shaped by what the property offers on its own grounds, which is exactly why choosing the right one matters.

Matachica Resort and Spa, Ambergris Caye

Matachica is the one explicitly described as adult-only, with 33 thatched-roof casitas and villas on northern Ambergris Caye. The Seafront Luxury Suites come with a private terrace and plunge pool, so a morning swim happens in your own corner of the property. The Seabreeze Luxury Villa suits adult families or small groups who want to share one roof.

Meals are handled at the Mambo Bistro, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and cocktails arrive at Danny’s Tree Bar, a name that already tells you the mood. Jade Spa works with local ingredients such as papaya, banana and coffee in its treatments, which makes a massage smell a bit like a tropical kitchen. Snorkelers can reach vivid reefs just steps from their casita.

Matachica also has a sister property, GAÏA River Lodge, and combining stays at both is recommended. That pairing gives a stay on the sea and a stay by a river in one trip.

Thatch Caye Resort, a private island

Thatch Caye is a private island resort that accommodates only 30 guests at any given time, spread across 15 private island accommodations. Overwater bungalows look out over the Caribbean, and the Coco Lounge offers a TV, gourmet coffee and high-speed WiFi for the moments you do want a screen.

Dining is farm-to-table and shared, so dinner is a communal affair rather than a table for two in a corner. Divers will find an on-site 5-Star PADI Dive Operation. The resort received TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Best of Best Award in 2025.

Cayo Espanto, the all-inclusive private island

Cayo Espanto is an ultra-luxury private island resort just three miles off the coast of San Pedro. All of its premium villas are seafront, on the beach, with private pools. Dining is all-inclusive and tailored to each guest’s tastes, with award-winning five-star cuisine.

Spa treatments, from massages to facials, are delivered in your own private oasis, so even the spa visit never leaves the villa. The resort has been nominated for the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2025 in the Best Private Island Resort category.

Who are they for?

They are for adults who want quiet, privacy and a deliberate change of pace, and honeymooners are the clearest example. A couple arriving at Thatch Caye with the Happily Ever After Package finds premium champagne on arrival and floral turndown service waiting in the room. The package also includes a private candlelit dinner in the Honeymoon Palapa and a breakfast in bed with mimosas.

The package takes 15% off standard room rates and asks for a minimum stay of three nights, so it suits a couple planning to settle in, not pass through. For details, the resort’s honeymoon line is 1-877-418-2562.

Couples who want a room of their own pool

Matachica’s Seafront Luxury Suites and every villa at Cayo Espanto come with a private pool or plunge pool. That suits couples who would rather read, nap and swim without sharing a deck. Add a spa treatment at Jade Spa or one delivered to your private oasis at Cayo Espanto, and an entire day can pass without a schedule.

A sunset drink is easy to arrange on the Matachica side, with Danny’s Tree Bar serving cocktails on site. At Cayo Espanto, meals and the rest are part of the all-inclusive dining, so there is no bill to split at the end of an evening.

Divers and snorkelers

Thatch Caye’s on-site 5-Star PADI Dive Operation makes it a natural base for people who plan their days around the water. Matachica offers a gentler version of the idea: reefs to snorkel just steps from the casita, so a mask and fins are all you need before breakfast. If one person dives and the other would rather lie in a hammock, the overwater bungalows at Thatch Caye and the casitas at Matachica both keep the sea within sight from the room.

Adult friends and small groups

Not every adults-only trip is a romantic one. The Seabreeze Luxury Villa at Matachica is described as ideal for adult families or small groups, which makes it a base for a reunion, a milestone birthday or a long weekend with friends. At Thatch Caye, the shared farm-to-table dining naturally puts a small group of guests around the same table.

Where are they?

They sit in two kinds of places: on northern Ambergris Caye and on private islands in Belize’s Caribbean waters. Matachica Resort and Spa is on the northern part of Ambergris Caye, with its casitas and villas facing the sea. Cayo Espanto is a private island just three miles off the coast of San Pedro. Thatch Caye Resort is also on a private island in Belize.

Northern Ambergris Caye

Matachica is the mainland-style choice of the three, in the sense that it sits on a caye with a town nearby rather than on an island of its own. The casitas are thatched, the reefs are within snorkeling reach of the shore, and the spa and restaurants are all on the property. If you want to pair the sea with a river stay, Matachica’s sister property GAÏA River Lodge is the suggested companion, and combining the two is recommended.

Off the coast of San Pedro

Cayo Espanto lies just three miles off the coast of San Pedro, which gives it a sense of being completely apart while staying within sight of the town. The villas are all on the beach, each with its own pool, and the island is set up so that dining, spa treatments and relaxing all happen without leaving your villa.

Thatch Caye, a small island of its own

Thatch Caye is a private island with just 15 accommodations and room for 30 guests at any given time. That small scale defines the place: a handful of overwater bungalows, a lounge with coffee and WiFi, a dock and a dive operation, and shared dinners that bring everyone together in the evening.

The island setting means the horizon is your neighbor. Being on a private island of this size is the point of the trip, not a side effect of it.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, which covers the Caribbean side of Belize where these resorts sit, so keep it in mind when choosing dates. Hotels and tourist accommodations in Belize collect a tourist accommodation tax from each guest on behalf of the government, so expect it to appear on your bill.
