A raft drops through the dark of a slide tower, a shark glides past the glass of a tunnel overhead, and somewhere beyond the palms a yacht is easing into its slip. That is a normal afternoon at Atlantis. It is a casino resort on Paradise Island, part of Nassau, built around a water park, a huge marine habitat and five separate hotels, and it suits families, couples and groups who want one address for a whole vacation.

What is Atlantis Paradise Island?
Atlantis Paradise Island is an ocean-themed casino resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, laid out over 154 acres with a water park, a marine habitat and several hotel towers. The theme is the lost city under the sea, and you feel it everywhere, in the carved stonework, the lagoons, the aquariums built into corridors and the way the whole place seems to face the water.
The resort officially opened on December 11, 1998, when the Royal Towers were completed, and it has grown tower by tower since. Today it is owned by Brookfield Asset Management and operated by Marriott International’s Autograph Collection Hotels. Everyone is welcome to explore the experiences across the property, whichever of the five hotels they sleep in.
The casino
The casino spans a lagoon and links The Royal and The Coral, so you walk from one tower to the other past the gaming floor. It holds more than 700 slot machines and dozens of tables for Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Baccarat and Mini-Baccarat. For high-stakes play, Cleitos offers table gaming in a private or semi-private setting just off the main floor.
Newcomers can learn at the tables with a dealer in the free daily lesson. Casino guests can also sign up for a player’s card at Casino Guest Services, which earns perks such as free play, comped stays and invitations to VIP tournaments.
| Where | Open |
|---|---|
| Main casino floor, slot machines | 24 hours daily |
| Main casino floor, table games | 10 AM to 4 AM daily |
| Sea Glass at The Cove, table games | Thursday to Saturday, 11 AM to 2 AM |
| Free gaming lessons with a dealer | Daily at 3 PM |
| The Reserve at Baths Colonnade | Daily, 10 AM to 5 PM, weather permitting |
Restaurants, bars and the golf course
The resort counts 21 restaurants and 19 bars and lounges, and it presents itself as a dining destination with restaurants led by world-renowned chefs. Choices run from relaxed beachside lunches to elegant, chef-driven dinners. Amber, for one, serves modern American classics with global inspiration and Bahamian soul.
The dining listings can be sorted by type: Signature Dining, Casual, Fast-Casual, Bar & Lounge and Kid Friendly. Dining reservations open 90 days or less before arrival, subject to availability. Guests who stay four nights or more can receive complimentary breakfast for two, with savings of up to 35% and a $250 resort credit.
Golfers have a 7,100-yard course on the property, and boaters have their own marina. Between the beaches, the slides and the tables, a stay here can be built without ever leaving the grounds.
What are the hotels at Atlantis?
Atlantis has five distinct hotels: The Cove, The Royal, The Coral, The Reef and Harborside Resort. Each has its own mood, from adults-only luxury to nautical villas for a crowd, and anyone may stay at any of them. The choice comes down to who is traveling and how much quiet you want.
The Cove and The Royal
The Cove is the luxury tower, a 600-suite property that opened in March 2007 and is adults only. It is designed around luxury, sensuality and white-glove Bahamian service. It also has its own table gaming at Sea Glass, open Thursday through Saturday.
The Royal is the hotel that stands as the beacon of Atlantis, with opulent details fit for royalty and adventures for thrill-seekers of any age. It is the original tower from the 1998 opening, and it sits beside the casino, so it suits families who want to be in the middle of everything.
The Coral and Harborside Resort
The Coral stands near the Marina with a fresh, newly updated design and views of yachts and the ocean. It connects to the casino, which makes it a natural base for anyone who plans evenings on the gaming floor.
Harborside Resort also sits near the Marina and calls itself a fresh nautical oasis with the same harbor views. Its one-, two- and three-bedroom villas accommodate families or groups of up to nine guests, which makes it the answer for a multi-generation trip or two families sharing.
The Reef
The Reef is made up of luxury residences for travelers who want the comforts of home with views of a tropical paradise. Wi-Fi at The Reef and The Cove covers six devices, against four elsewhere, a small plus for a family with many screens. The daily resort fee at all the hotels covers a long list: Aquaventure water park, The Dig, Predator Tunnel, the marine habitat, the fitness center, two reusable water bottles, the resort shuttle and local phone calls.
Check-in, check-out and age rules
Check-in is at 4:00 PM at every hotel. Check-out is at 11:00 AM everywhere except Harborside Resort, where it is 10:00 AM. At check-in, a valid credit card is required at all five.
| Hotel | Check-in | Check-out | Minimum age of one guest at check-in |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Cove | 4:00 PM | 11:00 AM | 18 |
| The Royal | 4:00 PM | 11:00 AM | 18 |
| The Coral | 4:00 PM | 11:00 AM | 18 |
| The Reef | 4:00 PM | 11:00 AM | 18 |
| Harborside Resort | 4:00 PM | 10:00 AM | 21 |
What is the water park and the marine life?
The water park is Aquaventure, built around slides, river rides and pools, and the marine life is an enormous collection of animals living in lagoons, tunnels and open-air habitats across the resort. Together they are the reason many families choose Atlantis over a plain beach hotel.
Aquaventure
Aquaventure is a water park with a strong focus on theming, with attractions you do not usually find at a local water park. Its two big features are The Current, a lazy river that behaves like a raft ride, and the temple slide tower, home to the Leap of Faith slider. The slides, river rides and pools sit alongside five miles of white sand beaches.
Resort guests have access included in the daily resort fee. Visitors not staying at the resort can book day passes online for the water park, Dolphin Cay, the marine habitat, the pools and the beaches.
The marine habitat, The Dig and Predator Tunnel
The marine habitat is described as the world’s largest open-air marine habitat, with more than 65,000 aquatic animals from 250 species. Dolphins, sharks, sawfish and stingrays are among them, and many are seen through glass as you wander the corridors and tunnels.
The Dig is the maze of passages built to look like the ruins of the lost city, with tanks on every side. Predator Tunnel puts you in a passage beneath the sharks. Both are covered by the resort fee for hotel guests, and neither depends on the weather, which helps when a shower hits the beach.
Dolphin Cay
Dolphin Cay is a 14-acre marine habitat for manta rays, sea lions and rescued Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. It is both a conservation and education center and a place where visitors can interact with dolphins in a controlled environment. It is described as one of the largest and most sophisticated marine habitats and dolphin rescue-rehabilitation facilities in the world.
The swim experience has been reimagined there, with a format unlike a standard dolphin encounter. For Dolphin Cay reservations, call toll-free at (888) 877-7521 or email [email protected].
How do you get to Atlantis?
You get to Atlantis on Paradise Island, which is technically part of Nassau, so the trip starts with a stay in or near Nassau and ends at the resort’s own towers. The resort sits on its own island, and nearly everything a visitor wants is on the property itself.
Arriving and checking in
Check-in begins at 4:00 PM, and a valid credit card is needed at the desk. The guest who checks in must be at least 18 at The Coral, The Royal, The Cove and The Reef, and at least 21 at Harborside Resort, so a family with a young adult traveling alone needs to plan around that.
Check-out is at 11:00 AM at four of the hotels and 10:00 AM at Harborside Resort. Arrive on a morning flight, and you may spend the hours before check-in at the beaches or in the water park, since the resort welcomes all guests to explore the experiences across the property.
Getting around the resort
The resort shuttle is included in the daily resort fee, so hotel guests can move between the towers, the marina and the main attractions without extra cost. The casino links The Royal and The Coral directly, which means some of the walking is indoors.
The Coral and Harborside Resort both sit near the Marina, so the water is your view from the room. The Cove and The Reef offer a quieter stay, set apart in character from the family energy near the water park.
By boat and as a day visitor
Atlantis Marina takes sailboats and powerboats of up to 240 feet, so a private yacht can tie up next to the hotels that look onto the harbor. From the marina, the dining, the casino and the water park are all on the same property.
Visitors who are not staying at the resort can book day passes online for the water park, Dolphin Cay, the marine habitat, the pools and the beaches on Paradise Island. Dining reservations, for those who want one of the signature restaurants, can be made 90 days or less before arrival.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, which covers part of the year when many families travel. Atlantis is a large resort with a lot of indoor space, from the casino to the marine tunnels, and the Reserve at Baths Colonnade is open weather permitting.
The resort fee already covers the water park, the marine habitat, Wi-Fi and the shuttle, so most daily costs are handled before you reach the beach. Casino play, dining and Dolphin Cay are the main extras to plan for.
