Freeport Airport to Lucaya: Getting into Town, Your Options and Arriving at FPO

You step out of arrivals at Freeport with the warm Atlantic air on your skin, and the island you flew over, flat and green and edged with pale sand, is suddenly all around you. Grand Bahama International Airport is where the flights from Florida, Canada and the other Bahamian islands set you down. From here the choice is how to reach Freeport proper, or the resort side of Lucaya, where the beaches, the marketplace and the dive boats are.

How do you get from the airport to Freeport and Grand Bahama?

The right way depends mostly on where you are sleeping, because the airport serves the whole city of Freeport and Lucaya is a suburb of it, the tourist side with the resorts and Port Lucaya Marketplace. Pick the hotel first and the rest of the plan follows.

A stay at Our Lucaya, which holds both the Radisson and Reef Village properties, points you toward Lucaya. A guesthouse or B&B in Freeport itself points you elsewhere.

What decides the rest is the usual short list: how much luggage you carry, whether you travel alone or with a group, how late your flight lands and how much you want to spend. Dive gear, strollers and a family of five make a different case from one traveler with a carry-on. A late arrival changes things too, since you will want a plan settled before you leave the terminal rather than after.

Grand Bahama is a large, flat island, and Freeport covers a wide area of its own. That is why it helps to know your exact address on arrival. Freeport and Lucaya share the Eastern Time Zone, so your watch does not change when you cross between them. The same is true of the airport, which keeps Florida time.

Your options from the airport

A transfer arranged through your hotel or resort

Freeport offers accommodations from family-friendly resorts to romantic all-inclusives and cozy B&Bs, and a place that welcomes guests at that scale is a natural first question for your arrival. A resort such as Our Lucaya is the sort of address where you can ask how guests usually reach the property from the airport. Settling this before you fly means you walk out of the terminal with a destination and a plan.

This suits first-time visitors, families with young children and anyone landing after dark. It also suits groups traveling together, who can keep one plan for everyone. When you write to your hotel, give your flight details and your arrival time so the property can match them.

Ground transport at the airport

Once you are outside the terminal, the road toward Freeport and Lucaya begins at the airport itself. Ask your hotel in advance which kind of ground transport suits your party and your luggage, whether a taxi, a shared ride or a vehicle booked ahead.

The answer will depend on your group and on where your bed is. Say the name of your hotel clearly, and the neighborhood too, since Freeport and Lucaya are different parts of the same urban area.

Travelers heading to Port Lucaya, with its shops, restaurants and the music in Count Basie Square, should name the marketplace or the resort rather than just Lucaya. A clear destination saves confusion, and it saves time at the end of a long travel day.

Arriving by sea instead

Freeport also has an international ferry connection to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, operated by Baleària with the high-speed passenger catamaran HSC Jaume II. That is a different way of reaching the island and not a way to cross from the airport into town. It matters if you are comparing how to get to Grand Bahama in the first place, since the ferry lands you on the island without passing through the airport.

Travelers who fly in and also plan a sea crossing for the return, or the other way round, will find the island has two doors, one in the air and one on the water. The airport handles flights from the United States and Canada and domestic flights from other islands of the Bahamas, so it is the door most visitors use.

The airport is the broader of the two doors, because it takes flights from the United States and Canada as well as from the rest of the Bahamas. If you are coming from another Bahamian island, you will likely land at the same terminal as travelers from Florida. The ferry is a separate choice made before the trip begins.

The trade-off is simple. Flying brings you to the airport, from where you still need to reach your hotel in Freeport or Lucaya. The sea route brings you to Freeport directly. Each has its own rhythm, and each begins with where you are traveling from.

One more thing shapes the choice: distance. Freeport lies a short way off the Florida coast, which is why the island feels so close to the Eastern Seaboard. For anyone on that coast, Grand Bahama is the kind of place that can be reached for a long weekend as readily as for a week.

Arriving at the airport

Grand Bahama International Airport goes by the code FPO, which is what you will see on your ticket and on the bag tag. Its runway is long enough for the largest aircraft in service, which tells you something about how seriously this island has taken air travel since the early days of Freeport as a free trade zone. The airport was privately owned until the government of The Bahamas bought it, and it now serves a city known as the second-largest in the country.

The airport sits within a larger setting. Its land adjoins the Freeport Harbour Company, and the two operate as one entity known as the Sea Air Business Centre. That says something about the island’s identity: a place built around the idea that planes and ships meet in one spot, a few minutes from where you are standing with your suitcase.

On arrival you are on Eastern Time, the same as Florida, so you gain no hour and lose none. The island sits close to every major city of the Eastern Seaboard, which explains why so many travelers arrive here for a weekend as well as for a longer stay. Domestic flights from other Bahamian islands come in as well, so the terminal receives both visitors and islanders.

Once you have your bags, keep the name and address of your hotel handy. Freeport spreads over a wide area, and Lucaya, where the resorts, the beach and Port Lucaya Marketplace are found, is only one part of it. If you are planning a dive with UNEXSO, a day in the marketplace or an evening at Count Basie Square, knowing where you are headed first makes the ride easier.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.

The island has a hot, rainy season from May through October and a warm, dry season from November through April, so what you wear on the ride from the airport depends on when you travel. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and it overlaps the rainy months, which is worth a thought when you plan flights and the end of your stay.

Outside the resorts, keep your belongings with you. Visitors to Lucayan National Park, for example, are told never to leave anything unattended, since thefts have been known to occur. The same habit serves you well in a rental parking space, on a beach or at a table in the marketplace, and it costs nothing.
