Things to do in San Miguel de Allende in January
January’s 72.3°F afternoons and 0.63 inches of monthly precipitation suit sites where you spend hours on foot. The list runs from the pink neo-Gothic towers of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel over the Jardín Principal, to a botanical garden, to an archaeological zone reached by a walk.
Cañada de la Virgen (an INAH archaeological zone) charges 100 pesos for adults and 25 pesos for children. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with last entry at 4 p.m. Visitors are shuttled the final stretch in 20-passenger vehicles run by the state culture institute, after a walk of almost a kilometer. El Charco del Ingenio charges 100 pesos, or 50 pesos for students, teachers and seniors with ID (tariffs as posted in December 2024). It is open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
El Charco is a botanical garden and reserve, founded as a civil association in 1991, with an extensive collection of Mexican cactus and succulents, many rare or endangered. Hot-spring parks fed by the same aquifer sit a short drive out on the road toward Dolores Hidalgo. We found no fees, hours or water temperatures for them, so we give none. What January changes at all of these places is the air: 40.3°F at the average low, 72.3°F at the average high.
Children under 10 walk into El Charco free, and visitors from the surrounding indigenous communities enter Cañada de la Virgen free. The Jardín Principal is the town’s main plaza, and we found no admission listed for it.

El Charco closes at 5 p.m. and daylight ends at 6:23 p.m., so finish the plaza walk before dark.
Day 2 goes to Cañada de la Virgen, open from 10 a.m. with last entry at 4 p.m. Allow time for the almost-kilometer walk and the shuttle, and reach the gate by early afternoon at the latest. The zone closes on Mondays, so start the trip with El Charco on a Monday. If rain arrives (2.4 days in an average January), spend that day at the hot-spring parks on the road toward Dolores Hidalgo.
