Is San Miguel de Allende safe to visit?
The U.S. State Department’s Mexico travel advisory, issued May 29, 2026, rates the state of Guanajuato at Level 3, Reconsider Travel. The rating is set for the whole state, and San Miguel de Allende is inside it. We hold no town-level incident data, so we won’t call the town safe or unsafe on our own authority. Ask your travel insurer how it treats a Level 3 destination, because policies differ, and book refundable rates where they exist. The hot-spring parks on the road toward Dolores Hidalgo fall under the same rating: that town is in Guanajuato too.
What is there to do in San Miguel de Allende?
Start at the Jardín Principal and use the Parroquia’s pink towers as the fixed point you keep finding again. The streets around it are steep, cobbled and lined with colonial facades. The historic center is closed to most through-traffic near the plaza, so the town is best covered on foot. Take a car, if you have one, only to the places beyond the center.
Cañada de la Virgen is the outing with a schedule. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with last entry at 4 p.m., which means Mondays are closed. Admission is 100 pesos for adults and 25 pesos for children, and visitors from the surrounding indigenous communities enter free. Getting in takes a walk of almost a kilometer, then a shuttle: 20-passenger vehicles run by the state culture institute cover the final stretch.
El Charco del Ingenio is a botanical garden and nature reserve founded in 1991 as a civil association, with an extensive Mexican cactus and succulent collection, many of them rare or endangered. General admission is 100 pesos (50 for students, teachers and seniors with ID, free under 10), daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hot-spring parks are the loosest plan: several, fed by the same aquifer, a short drive out on the road toward Dolores Hidalgo. We hold no fees or hours for them, so check each park first.

For a first visit, book inside the center. The plaza and the Parroquia are a walk away, and the outlying sites get simple: Cañada de la Virgen means a shuttle after the walk, the springs a short drive. Keep the Dolores Hidalgo road for a return trip built around the water.

Two sites close early. Cañada de la Virgen stops admitting visitors at 4 p.m. and shuts at 6. El Charco del Ingenio closes at 5. Both are morning and early-afternoon plans, and posted hours can change, so confirm them with INAH and the garden a few days before.
