Next door, Tonalá holds its big pottery and crafts market on Thursdays and Sundays, so aim one day at either.
Start at the cathedral, with its twin yellow-tiled spires, on the Plaza de Armas, where the Teatro Degollado, the historic opera house, faces it. From there the Plaza Tapatía runs past the Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres to the Hospicio Cabañas. UNESCO inscribed it in 1997, and it covers 2.34 hectares. Manuel Tolsa gave it a Neoclassical design, and it now houses the Instituto Cultural Cabañas and the chapel murals José Clemente Orozco painted in the late 1930s. We could not verify its admission or hours.
The Museo Regional de Guadalajara charges 210 pesos general admission, and 105 pesos for Mexican nationals and foreign residents in Mexico. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the historic center. In May those hours cover the 92.1°F stretch of the day indoors. On a Monday the doors are closed, so that day needs another plan.
