The city sits at 1,551 meters. Every figure here comes from the Guadalajara observatory, SMN station 14065, in the city center, so the numbers describe the historic core. The western suburbs toward Zapopan sit a little higher than the observatory.

Guadalajara weather in March

Mexico’s national weather service (SMN, under CONAGUA) puts the March average high at 85.5°F and the average low at 48.6°F, with 0.20 inches of precipitation for the month. These are 1991-2020 normals from an instrument in the city center, with no grid-cell modeling in between.

An average March records measurable rain on fewer than one day, 0.9 by the SMN count. The service does not publish the threshold behind a rain day on its sheet, so we do not line that count up against U.S. figures. If the one wet day lands on yours, the Museo Regional and the chapel of the Hospicio Cabañas are both indoors.

Things to do in Guadalajara in March

March suits stacking outdoor days. With 0.9 days of measurable rain on average, a walking day in the historic center or a day out among the agave fields around Tequila, west of Guadalajara, rarely needs a wet-weather swap. Several distilleries in town offer tours.

The cathedral’s twin yellow-tiled spires anchor the Plaza de Armas, and the Teatro Degollado, the historic opera house, faces it. Plaza Tapatía links that corner to the Hospicio Cabañas, past the Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres. The Hospicio is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, covers 2.34 hectares, and was designed by Manuel Tolsá in the Neoclassical style. Its chapel holds murals painted by José Clemente Orozco in the late 1930s. We did not read its admission or hours, so check before you go.

The Museo Regional de Guadalajara charges 210 pesos, or 105 pesos for Mexican nationals and foreign residents, and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Inside it and inside the Hospicio chapel, March changes nothing. On the plazas and in the crafts towns it changes the hour, because 85.5°F afternoons favor shade and mornings at 48.6°F favor a sweater.

We found no free-admission dates for March, so we list none. The plazas cost nothing to walk. Tlaquepaque, just south of central Guadalajara, is a crafts town of pottery, blown glass and mariachi plazas. Next door, Tonalá holds a large pottery and crafts market on Thursdays and Sundays.

Guadalajara itinerary for March

Pick a day from Tuesday to Sunday so the Museo Regional is open. Start on the Plaza de Armas soon after the 6:59 a.m. sunrise, sweater on, for the cathedral and the Teatro Degollado from outside. Be at the museum door at 9 a.m. for the 210-peso entry and stay until midday. Lunch comes next. Spend the hot early afternoon inside the Hospicio Cabañas with the Orozco murals, then walk Plaza Tapatía back toward the cathedral as the light softens before the 7:04 p.m. sunset.

Give the second day to Tlaquepaque in the morning and Tonalá after it, choosing a Thursday or a Sunday for the Tonalá market. If the weather turns, swap the outdoor stops for whichever of the museum or the Hospicio chapel you skipped on day one. Tonalá’s market only runs on its two days.

Guadalajara in March vs February and April

All three columns come from the same SMN station 14065 and the same 1991-2020 period. March’s high runs 4.9 degrees above February’s and 4.3 degrees below April’s, while its low is 2.4 degrees above February’s and 3.9 degrees below April’s. Rain falls to less than half of February’s 0.50 inches, and rain days drop from 1.8 to 0.9. April barely moves them again, at 0.8 days.

Is March a good time to visit Guadalajara?

Yes, for anyone who wants long walking days: 0.9 rain days, 85.5°F afternoons and 12 hours 04 minutes of light on March 15 suit the historic center well. It suits you less if you dislike cold starts, since the average low is 48.6°F.
