December and February sit within a few degrees of January, so the choice between them turns on rain and light, and on the rates you find for your dates. The Hospicio Cabañas, the Museo Regional, Tlaquepaque and a day in the agave country around Tequila all work in this weather.

Guadalajara weather in January

Every figure here comes from the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (CONAGUA), 1991-2020 normals for station 14065, the Guadalajara observatory in the city center at 1,551 m. That is a working thermometer, not a grid-cell reanalysis, and it represents the historic core. The western suburbs toward Zapopan sit a little higher, so expect a shade of difference there. January averages 76.5°F for the high, 44.1°F for the low and 0.70 inches of precipitation.

The SMN counts 2.3 days of measurable rain in an average January. It has not published the threshold for what counts as measurable on the station sheet, so we cannot say how much a wet day holds. Over a whole month, that is a couple of wet afternoons. A stray shower sends you into a museum or a covered market like the Mercado San Juan de Dios.

The average high and the average low sit 32.4°F apart. Pack for two different days: a warm top for the walk out the door and again after sunset, something light for the middle of the afternoon, and sunglasses for the hours in between.

How warm is Guadalajara in January?

Averages hide extremes. The 76.5°F high is the middle of January afternoons and the 44.1°F low the middle of the mornings, so individual days land on either side of both. We read no record highs or lows from the station, so we give no range beyond the averages.

In practice, a walk that starts soon after the 7:31 a.m. sunrise is a jacket walk, and by early afternoon the jacket goes in the bag. There is no sea to report a water temperature for, since Guadalajara sits inland at 1,551 m. If you want a swim, ask your hotel about a pool and how it is kept.

The Museo Regional lists a flat 210 pesos general admission, and we read no advance-booking requirement on the INAH listing.

We could not verify Guadalajara’s lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Ask whether the quoted room rate includes it, and compare the final total rather than the nightly headline.

The line where paying more changes the month is the bed. With a 44.1°F average low, ask about heating or warm bedding before you pay. We found no data on how many rooms in the city are heated, so a direct question to the hotel settles it.

Things to do in Guadalajara in January

January afternoons at 76.5°F suit long outdoor stretches. The cathedral, with its twin yellow-tiled spires, anchors the Plaza de Armas, and the Teatro Degollado, the historic opera house, faces it. From there the Plaza Tapatía links the cathedral area to the Hospicio Cabañas, past the Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres. Tlaquepaque, just south of the center, is the pottery, blown glass and mariachi-plaza town. With 0.70 inches of precipitation for the month, the walks rarely need a plan B.

The Hospicio Cabañas has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and covers 2.34 hectares. Manuel Tolsa designed it in the Neoclassical style, and it now houses the Instituto Cultural Cabañas and José Clemente Orozco’s chapel murals from the late 1930s. We could not verify its admission or hours. The Museo Regional de Guadalajara charges 210 pesos general admission, 105 pesos for Mexican nationals and foreign residents in Mexico, and opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The museum closes at 4 p.m., 2 hours 34 minutes before the 6:34 p.m. sunset, so the daylight left after its doors close belongs to the plazas. Galleries and murals stay the same all year. The air changes: the first walk of the day runs near the 44.1°F morning low, and the afternoon reaches the 76.5°F average high.

The plazas around the cathedral and the walk down the Plaza Tapatía are public space, so walking them costs nothing. We did not verify entry fees for the cathedral, the Teatro Degollado or the Hospicio, so check before you go. The distilleries around Tequila offer tours, and we have not verified their prices or hours either.

Guadalajara itinerary for January

Day one, any day but Monday, since the Museo Regional is closed then. Sunrise is 7:31 a.m., but the museum opens at 9 a.m., so start there with the jacket on and the air still near the 44.1°F morning low. Cross the Plaza de Armas to the cathedral late morning and have lunch at the Mercado San Juan de Dios. In the afternoon, walk the Plaza Tapatía to the Hospicio Cabañas for Orozco’s murals. Sunset is 6:34 p.m., so dinner comes with the jacket back on.

Day two goes to Tlaquepaque for pottery, blown glass and lunch near a mariachi plaza, or out to the agave fields at Tequila for a distillery tour. With 2.3 rain days in the month, a wet forecast is the exception. If it turns wet, trade the outdoor plaza walk for the Hospicio’s indoor murals and move the crafts browsing to the next dry hour.

Guadalajara in January vs December and February

January’s average high is 0.5°F below December’s and 4.1°F below February’s. Its average low is 1.4°F colder than December’s and 2.1°F colder than February’s. On rain, January is wetter than both neighbors at 0.70 inches against 0.30 and 0.50, and at 2.3 wet days against 1.4 and 1.8. All three months use the same SMN station and the same 1991-2020 period, so the columns compare directly.

Shifting four weeks later buys February’s 80.6°F afternoons and a drier month. Shifting four weeks earlier buys December’s 0.30 inches and 1.4 wet days at almost the same temperatures. We found no price or crowd data to weigh against those gains, so the climate is the only thing that separates the three months, and it separates them only slightly.

Is January a good time to visit Guadalajara?

Yes for walkers, museum-goers and anyone who wants to spend the day outdoors in 76.5°F afternoons with 2.3 rain days. No for anyone counting on warm mornings, a sea swim or a guaranteed dry day.
