Ensenada sits on the Pacific coast of Baja California. What January adds is air that stays comfortable for the drive out to La Bufadora on the Punta Banda peninsula and for an afternoon in Valle de Guadalupe. What it takes away is warm-water swimming.

Ensenada has no commercial airport of its own, so the nearest international one is Tijuana International (TIJ). From the coast, the town is the usual overland gateway to Sierra San Pedro Martir National Park and to Valle de Guadalupe, the wine valley inland.

Ensenada weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days

Ensenada’s January normals, 1991-2020, come from Mexico’s national weather service (SMN, part of CONAGUA): an average high of 65.8°F, an average low of 44.2°F and 1.77 inches of precipitation. The thermometer stands at Punta Banda (station 02108), about 11 miles south of downtown on the same bay. It is the nearest station with published normals, since the town-center station has none. Read every figure here as the bay’s climate, not a reading taken on the waterfront.

Measurable rain falls on 4.3 days in an average January, as SMN counts them (its threshold for “measurable” is not published on the station sheet). That is roughly one wet day in a typical week. Keep one slot flexible, because the blowhole outing and the wine-valley afternoon trade places easily.

Between the 65.8°F afternoon high and the 44.2°F low lies a spread of 21.6 degrees. That means two wardrobes in one day: a fleece or jacket for mornings and evenings, something lighter for midday, and a thin rain shell for the 4.3 wet days.

Daylight lasts about 10 hours 20 minutes on January 15. The sun rises around 6:45 a.m. and sets around 5:05 p.m. local time (sunrise-sunset.org, converted from UTC to the America/Tijuana zone). Sea surface off Ensenada averages 60.0°F in January, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so a 24-hour average would come out a shade lower.

In the water, that is cold Pacific: wading and a quick dip work, a long swim wants a wetsuit. With afternoon air at 65.8°F, only 5.8 degrees warmer than the water, getting out is as cool as getting in, so keep a towel and a dry layer within reach.

How busy is Ensenada in January? Crowds and prices

We found no hotel-rate or occupancy series for Ensenada, so we cannot place January in the year’s price cycle and we crown no month cheap or expensive. What we can verify is traffic at the port: 360 cruise ship calls in 2025, 24% more than in 2024, bringing more than 1.3 million cruise passengers to the municipality (city government communiqué, April 4, 2026). Things to do in Ensenada in January

January afternoons near 65.8°F make the two headline outings comfortable in a jacket: the coast at La Bufadora and the wine country of Valle de Guadalupe. Beach time is the trade-off, with the sea at 60.0°F.

La Bufadora, a marine geyser on the Punta Banda peninsula about 20 miles southwest of Ensenada, sends a plume of seawater up to 30 meters (about 100 feet) through a coastal blowhole (Visit Mexico and CICESE, the Ensenada research center). Valle de Guadalupe, inland from town, is promoted by the state as the Ruta del Vino. Farther out, Sierra San Pedro Martir National Park, protected by CONANP, hosts Mexico’s National Astronomical Observatory.

The plume is Pacific water, and the sea barely shifts across the neighboring months: 60.2°F in December and 59.1°F in February, per the same marine API. The air is what changes with the season, from a 65.8°F high to a 44.2°F low. For the mountains we have no January reading of snow, road or trail conditions, so check with the park before you go.

We could not verify which of these stops charge admission or what hours they keep in January, so we quote no fees or opening times. Confirm both with the operators, and ask about tasting-room reservations in the valley.

Ensenada itinerary for January

Day one, the coast. Start the morning in layers, since lows reach 44.2°F, and eat a full breakfast before driving southwest toward the Punta Banda peninsula. Reach La Bufadora in late morning, as the air climbs toward its 65.8°F high, and watch the plume, which can rise about 100 feet. Have lunch on the peninsula, then head back to Ensenada with daylight in hand: the sun sets around 5:05 p.m.

Day two, the valley. Head inland to Valle de Guadalupe and the Ruta del Vino, with tastings booked ahead, since we have no verified hours for the tasting rooms. With 4.3 wet days in an average January, put whichever outing suits the weather first: a tasting can move indoors more easily than a blowhole overlook, so give the wetter day to the valley and the dry one to the coast. Leave the valley with daylight to spare for the drive back.

Ensenada in January vs December and February

Afternoon highs barely move: 66.0°F in December, 65.8°F in January, 65.3°F in February. Nights warm across the three months, from 43.3°F to 44.2°F to 44.6°F. Rain climbs from 1.39 inches over 3.1 days in December to 1.77 inches over 4.3 days in January, then reads 1.89 inches over 3.9 days in February. The sea steps down from 60.2°F to 60.0°F to 59.1°F (Open-Meteo Marine API, 2015-2024), while the air figures come from the SMN station at Punta Banda.

Moving four weeks earlier, into December, buys lighter rain (1.39 inches on 3.1 days) and a high 0.2 degrees above January’s, at the cost of nights 0.9 degrees colder at 43.3°F. Moving later, into February, buys nights 0.4 degrees milder at 44.6°F but adds rain (1.89 inches) and a cooler sea at 59.1°F. Neither move changes the afternoons by more than 0.5 degrees, so the only real gain in shifting is December’s lighter rain.

Is January a good time to visit Ensenada?

Yes, for anyone who wants cool-weather sightseeing: the blowhole, the wine valley and easy walking at 65.8°F highs. No, for anyone whose plan hinges on a swim, with the sea at 60.0°F and nights at 44.2°F.

Before booking, read the State Department’s Baja California entry (Mexico advisory reissued May 29, 2026): Level 3, Reconsider travel, citing terrorism, crime and kidnapping, with high homicide numbers in the non-tourist areas of Tijuana. Its only travel restrictions in the state cover the Mexicali Valley, with none elsewhere.
