In April, the first dive boats leave the San Miguel waterfront in the early morning light, and the sea off the pier is so calm and clear you can watch fish from the railing. Afternoons turn to tacos and cold drinks at open-air tables along the malecón. It is a warm, easy month on the island, with the water inviting and the hurricane season still weeks away.

What is the weather like in Cozumel in April?
April in Cozumel is warm, sunny and mostly dry, with a sea that is already comfortable for swimming and snorkeling.
| Month | Average high (°F) | Average low (°F) | Rain (in) | Rain days | Sea (°F) | Daylight on the 15th |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| March | 79.8 | 75.5 | 1.07 | 2.8 | 81.3 | 12 hours 4 minutes |
| April | 81.7 | 77.4 | 1.19 | 2.4 | 82.4 | 12 hours 40 minutes |
| May | 83.1 | 78.8 | 3.34 | 6.6 | 84.2 | 13 hours 10 minutes |
Mornings are the best hours for walking the town or heading out on a boat, when the sun is bright but the air has not yet turned heavy. By midafternoon it feels properly hot, and a shaded table, a swim or a siesta makes sense. Evenings stay warm enough to eat outside in short sleeves.
Rain is rare and usually brief, a passing shower rather than a lost day. Days run long, with light lingering past dinnertime, and the water is clear on the calm west side where most people swim and dive.
What to do in Cozumel in April
April is a reef month. With the water warm, the air mostly dry and the sea on the leeward side usually gentle, the days center on what lies under the surface and on slow, sunny hours in town.
Diving and snorkeling on the western reefs
The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System includes the reefs off Cozumel’s west coast, and those reefs draw many travelers here in the first place. These reefs are usually reached by boat, not from shore, so a typical day begins with a morning departure from San Miguel’s waterfront, followed by a first stop to dive or snorkel and a second stop before lunch.
Walls drop away into blue water, turtles drift past coral heads, and schools of colorful fish hang over the sand channels. Snorkelers get plenty out of the shallower reefs, while certified divers can drift along the walls in the gentle current the island is known for.
Set out in the morning, while the surface is at its calmest and the light is clearest. April suits first-timers well, since the warm water means you can stay in comfortably and a thin wetsuit or just a rash guard is often enough.
The calm west coast and the wilder east side
The town of San Miguel and its piers sit on the leeward west coast, where the water is gentle. The open Caribbean lies off the east coast, delivering stronger undertow and rougher surf, which makes this stretch ideal for a drive, a seafood lunch from a beachside shack and sweeping views instead of a casual swim.
Renting a ride for the loop around the island is a classic day out, with stops at rocky coves, wind-bent palms and breezy open-air restaurants. The ocean here is dramatic and loud, which makes a nice contrast to the quiet western shore.
San Miguel, Maya history and long lunches
In town, the malecón is the place to wander at sunset, with ice cream in hand and the sky turning orange over the water. Restaurants serve fresh ceviche, grilled fish, cochinita pibil and lime soup, and a cold beer with a squeeze of lime fits the April heat perfectly.
San Gervasio, inland, was a sanctuary to the Maya goddess Ixchel, and most of the buildings seen today date to the Late Postclassic period. It is a shaded, quiet walk among low temples and stone paths, a good complement to the reef days.
| Site | Admission |
|---|---|
| San Gervasio archaeological zone | 210 pesos general; 105 pesos for Mexican nationals and foreign residents |

Is Cozumel busy in April?
Cozumel is moderately busy in April, with lively days around the piers and calm corners everywhere else.
Spring break and the Easter vacation period bring North American and Mexican families, so the waterfront and popular dive operators feel active. Cruise ships keep arriving at the piers, and on those days the streets near the waterfront fill with day visitors, while the beaches farther south and the east coast stay relaxed.
Restaurants in town are easiest to enjoy outside the lunch rush, and rooms are worth reserving ahead if your dates touch the holiday weeks. Once the vacation crowds thin out, the island settles back into its easy pace.

Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates Quintana Roo Level 2, ‘Exercise increased caution,’ due to terrorism and crime.
April falls outside the official Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, so Cozumel is outside the official hurricane season this month, though weather can still change. In Mexico, dollars aren’t legal tender, so it’s up to each restaurant or shop to accept them, and using pesos is simpler. Even though Cozumel’s own compact international airport serves the island, plenty of travelers land in Cancun and complete the journey with a ferry ride from Playa del Carmen.
| Fee | Amount | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| Visitax (state visitor fee) | 2.50 UMA, about 293 pesos | Foreign visitors entering Quintana Roo |
| Cruise passenger fee | 5 US dollars | Cruise passengers, collected by the cruise line |
| Lodging tax (Impuesto Sobre Hospedaje) | 5% of the billed value, or 6% when a host or booking platform collects payment for a short-term rental | Guests, on accommodation |
Is April a good time to visit Cozumel?
Yes, April is a very good time for divers, snorkelers and anyone who wants sun, warm water and little rain.
March is a touch cooler and the sea a little fresher, while May brings noticeably more heat and more frequent showers as the wet season approaches. April sits in between, with the most comfortable balance of warm days, dry skies and inviting water. What makes it special here is the combination: reefs that are easy to enjoy, evenings on the malecón with no storm clouds on the horizon, and an island that still feels unhurried once the boats come back in.
