Jamaica in May: Weather, the First Wet Season and Prices After the High Season

The rain arrives in Jamaica before the storms do. May opens the island’s first wet season, and the Montego Bay gauge states it in one line: 24 days with measurable rain, 215 mm across the month. None of that has anything to do with hurricanes. The Atlantic season does not open until June 1, which gives May a position no other wet month on the Jamaican calendar can claim.

What the showers buy is an island back at full green, a sea holding 85°F, beaches that emptied when the high season closed in mid-April, and asking rates on the soft side of that boundary (est.). The month suits one traveler in particular: the one who books mornings for the outdoors, keeps the afternoon loose, and picks a coast by its rain column rather than its brochure.

May and the first wet season: 24 rain days at Montego Bay, 14 at Kingston

Jamaica gets two wet seasons, and May opens the first one. The island does not experience it evenly. Montego Bay logs 24 rain days and 215 mm in the 1991–2020 normals, Port Antonio 21 days and 153 mm, Kingston 14 days and 97 mm. A rain day is any day the reanalysis records at least 1 mm, which covers the ten-minute burst as well as the grey afternoon. Tropical rain works in bursts, so the arithmetic that matters is hours lost, not days marked.

Hurricane season in Jamaica starts June 1, so May sits outside it

The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30, with its busiest stretch from August through October. May falls outside those dates entirely, and that boundary is not cosmetic: named-storm clauses, cancellation waivers and insurance windows are all written against the official calendar. A May traveler reads none of that fine print. That is the real gap between this month and September or October, which buy their discounts inside the peak stretch.

May prices in Jamaica: the first month clear of the high season

High season on the island runs mid-December to mid-April. May starts on the far side of that line, which is why the same room can read differently now than it did in March (est.), and why minimum-stay rules tend to loosen once the winter block clears (est.). We mark those as estimates because published season boundaries and rate seasonality are what we can source, not an index. May weather in Jamaica: temperatures and rain days, coast by coast

1991–2020 normals (ERA5) for the three reference cities. The rain column counts days with at least 1 mm in the reanalysis grid rather than at a local gauge, so treat 24 and 14 as a contrast between coasts, not as a forecast for your week. Daytime highs sit within three degrees of each other island-wide, which means the coast you choose in May is a rain decision far more than a temperature one.

The sea reads 85°F. That is two degrees under the year’s 87°F peak in October and two above where it settles by winter, which in practice means water temperature stops being a factor. Nobody counts minutes at 85°F. Reef sessions end when the light goes or the stomach complains, and reluctant swimmers stay in without negotiation.

The island has room again. Winter demand cleared with the mid-April boundary, so beaches, tables and boat charters carry slack (est.). Evenings help: sunset in Kingston moves from about 6:28pm on the 1st to about 6:39pm on the 31st, the longest days of the Jamaican year outside high summer. Put the falls, the reef and the boat day before noon, base south if the gauge worries you (Kingston records 14 rain days against Montego Bay’s 24), and let the afternoon cloud decide where lunch happens. The month hands back an 85°F sea, hills at their greenest, an evening that runs to 6:39pm by the 31st, and no named-storm clause to read until June 1.
