The Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1, and Jamaica’s summer pricing opens with it. The date does not mean storms arrive on schedule: NOAA puts the season’s busiest stretch in August, September and October, well past a June week. What follows the whistle is a hot, showery, cheaper island, and the honest framing is that the risk exists from the first of the month while sitting nowhere near its annual maximum.

The trade is legible in the numbers. Montego Bay averages 88°F days and 77°F nights, the sea holds 85°F, and the sun stays up until about 6:47pm by the end of the month. Two separate things travel under the same word. Climatology gives the season a start (June 1), an end (November 30) and a busiest stretch (August through October), which is where the Atlantic does most of its damage. Rate seasonality sets the frame. High season runs mid-December to mid-April, so a June week lands well outside the expensive half of the calendar and asking rates soften accordingly (est.). The nuance is internal to the month: the first fortnight stays quiet, then American and Jamaican school holidays start pushing family demand into the all-inclusives, and the same room can read differently in the last ten days (est.). June weather in Jamaica: temperatures and rain days, coast by coast

1991–2020 normals (ERA5) for the three reference cities. Read the rain column with care: 22 rain days at Montego Bay means the reanalysis logs at least 1 mm on 22 days in a grid cell, not 22 ruined days. June showers here build in the heat of the afternoon and move through. The north-south gap is the striking line on this table, with Kingston’s 70 mm running under half the north coast’s 148 mm, which makes the south side the drier bet if your week has no slack in it.

Water at 85°F. That is two degrees under the 87°F annual high that arrives in October and warm enough that nobody exits a snorkel stop shivering. For families, it is the single strongest argument for the month: small children stay in the water, and the reef stops being a five-minute novelty. Calm mornings are the rule on the leeward shores before the afternoon heat builds.

Long evenings. Sunset in Kingston runs from about 6:39pm at the start of the month to 6:47pm at the end, so a shower that swallows an hour of the afternoon costs nothing you cannot recover before dinner. Rooms are easier to find than in February, when both coasts fill, which is a good week to weigh Montego Bay against Negril or read the case for Ocho Rios as a base.

Rivers running. Those 148 mm on the north coast do one useful thing, and it shows up at the falls: June is a full-flow month at Dunn’s River. Go at the opening, wear shoes you can soak, and expect sections to close on the day after a violent downpour. June trades certainty for space. The season opens on the 1st and the climatology puts the danger two to four months later, so the realistic disruption in a June week is a heavy hour after lunch, not an evacuation order.
