October is the month Jamaica sells at a discount, and the reason is printed on the calendar. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and its most active stretch is August through October. Hurricane Melissa came ashore on October 28, 2025, hitting St. Elizabeth, Montego Bay and Negril hardest. That fact belongs at the top of the page, before anyone gets to talk about room rates.

October in Jamaica’s hurricane season: climatology vs an active alert

Two different things get confused here. Climatology says October falls inside the season’s busiest window, August through October, and Jamaica sits in a corridor storms use. An active alert is something else entirely: a specific system, a specific week, tracked by NOAA in real time. Nobody, including us, can tell you what your October dates will do. What the climatology can say: a typical October day, with no system on the map, is a beach day with an afternoon shower. What it cannot say is which October yours will be, and that tail risk is real enough to change how you book.

After Hurricane Melissa: what is open, coast by coast

Recovery has moved fast in some places and slowly in others. In the January 2026 counts, Negril had 43 hotels open and 11 still closed, air connectivity was largely restored, and arrivals were running at 80% of pre-storm volume. The south coast was the exception: roughly 650 rooms out of service in January 2026, with some reopenings scheduled as far out as June 2027. St. Elizabeth took the worst of it. October prices in Jamaica: the season floor before mid-December

Rate seasonality does the rest of the work. High season opens mid-December and holds through mid-April, so October sits at the opposite end of the curve, the soft end of the year (est.) across the island’s room stock. How to book an October trip to Jamaica

Four booking habits do the heavy lifting in October. Take the refundable rate even when the prepaid one dangles a discount. Buy the policy when you book, not the week before you fly, because coverage windows and named-storm exclusions vary by policy, and the timing rules are spelled out on our season page. Keep the dates able to move: with a hurricane, flexibility means postponing, not outrunning it across the island. 1991–2020 normals (ERA5) for the three reference cities. Read the rain column carefully: 25 rain days in Montego Bay means the ERA5 reanalysis records at least 1 mm on 25 days (grid values, not a local gauge), not 25 lost days. October rain here arrives tropical, heavy and brief, most often mid-afternoon or overnight, and it usually clears within the hour.

The warmest water of the year. The sea peaks at 87°F this month, four degrees above the 83°F it settles to by December. That difference is not academic. It is the difference between a snorkel session that ends when you get cold and one that ends when you get hungry, and it makes the reef genuinely comfortable for kids and reluctant swimmers.

The island to yourself. Resorts run below capacity, and restaurants seat you without a booking (est.). Daylight still runs 11.5 to 12 hours, with sunset sliding from about 6:00pm to 5:40pm across the month, so a full day of activity is available even when a shower eats an hour of it. Waterfalls at full volume. Months of rain do one obviously good thing: the rivers run hard. Dunn’s River opens at 8:30 (earlier on cruise-ship days), the climb covers 600 feet of terraces in an hour to 90 minutes, and entry is $25 for adults, $17 for children. Go at opening and you may share the terraces with a few dozen climbers instead of the cruise crowds, and know that after a violent downpour the park can close sections on the day. October asks you to price a risk rather than ignore it. Take the refundable rate, buy the policy the day you book, watch the NHC forecast as departure approaches (real visibility on a system is measured in days, not weeks), and the month pays out in 87°F water, half-empty beaches and rates the same resort will not repeat until next fall. Book it rigidly around one unmovable date and you have handed the weather a veto over your vacation.
