KINGSTON · SEPTEMBER · 17.99° N
Kingston in September runs warm from dawn to dark: afternoons average 86.5°F, nights bottom out near 75.9°F, and the sea off the city averages 87.6°F at its daily peak. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust, the statutory body that declares the island’s National Monuments, lists about forty heritage sites for Kingston alone, from the Port Royal forts to the monuments of National Heroes Park. Pick six of them and two September days fill up with forts, churches and monuments.
Rain comes with the warmth. Measurable rain falls on 12.9 days in an average September, up from 9.2 in August, and the month sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season. Read our hurricane-season guide before choosing a rate, and our Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa update before choosing an itinerary.

Kingston is served by its own international airport, so a September city break does not have to route through the north coast. Our flights from the US guide covers the routes, airport transfers covers the ride into town, and entry requirements covers the paperwork. For moving between sites once you land, start with getting around Jamaica.
Kingston weather in September: average highs, lows and rain days
| September measure | Kingston | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 86.5°F | ERA5, 1991-2020 |
| Average low | 75.9°F | ERA5, 1991-2020 |

| Days with 1 in or more | 0.4 | ERA5, 1991-2020 |

| Sunrise / sunset, September 15 | 5:54 a.m. / 6:10 p.m. | sunrise-sunset.org |
Every figure here for air and rain is ERA5 reanalysis, computed by Open-Meteo as 1991-2020 normals for one model grid cell at 17.997°N, 76.794°W, not a thermometer at an airport station. On that basis a September day in Kingston averages a high of 86.5°F and a low of 75.9°F, with 5.28 inches of rain over the month. The cell sits over the city on the sheltered south coast, the island’s driest side, so it tells you nothing about the resort towns of the north shore such as Montego Bay or Ocho Rios.
Those 12.9 wet days, each with at least 0.10 inch, work out to measurable rain on about three days in seven. Heavy rain is rarer: a day with an inch or more averages 0.4 per September, roughly two Septembers in every five. The average wet day brings about 0.4 inch (5.28 inches spread over 12.9 days), so plan one roofed site per day as a fallback and carry an umbrella.
The spread between day and night is 10.6°F, from 86.5°F down to 75.9°F. Nothing in that range calls for a sweater, even after dark. Pack light, breathable clothes you can rewear, a compact umbrella and shoes with grip for wet stone at the forts. Our Jamaica packing list covers the rest.
On September 15 Kingston gets about 12 hours 16 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 5:54 a.m. and sunset at 6:10 p.m. local time, per sunrise-sunset.org. Schedule the open-air sites for the first hours after dawn, plan no outdoor stop after 5:30 p.m., and book dinner for seven.
Can you swim in Kingston in September? Sea temperature
Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Kingston at 87.6°F in September, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so a 24-hour average would come out a shade cooler. The marine series also covers a different period from the 1991-2020 air normals, so its 1.1°F lead over the average afternoon high compares two separate datasets.
Water that warm brings no chill as you wade in and little cooling once you are swimming. Go in early, before the air climbs toward its 86.5°F average high, and keep drinking water on the shore. The reading comes from the sea off Kingston, so for places to swim along this side of the island, see our south coast guide.
We found no wind or swell series for Kingston in September, so we give no wave height and no wind speed. The weather risk we can point to is the season: September falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, and a tropical system can close beaches and boat trips at short notice. Check the forecast the evening before any day on the water.
How busy is Kingston in September? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for Kingston, so we rank no month as cheap or expensive. For a daily budget, see our Jamaica trip-cost guide, and for where September falls in the island’s year, see the best time to visit Jamaica.
Without a booking curve we put no number of weeks on lead time. In September, flexibility matters more than timing: choose a room rate you can cancel or move, and keep flights changeable where the fare allows, since the month sits in hurricane season. Price travel insurance that covers named storms alongside the room.
We could not verify the accommodation tax that applies to Kingston stays, so we give no rate and no amount. Ask the hotel for the all-in nightly price, taxes and fees included, before you pay a deposit.
Spend the extra on air conditioning. With the average low at 75.9°F, nights stay warm, and a room with reliable cooling decides how well you sleep before a 7 a.m. start at the forts. Pay for it before you pay for a view.
Things to do in Kingston in September

Dry days still outnumber wet ones in an average September, about 17 to 13, and sunrise at 5:54 a.m. leaves the early hours for the open-air half of Kingston’s heritage before the 86.5°F high builds. October lowers the high to 84.6°F but adds wet days, 15.1 of them.
At Port Royal, called “the richest and wickedest city in the world” before the 1692 earthquake, Fort Charles was the first fort, built in the late 1650s, followed by Fort Carlisle, Fort Morgan and Fort Rocky. Rockfort, on the city’s eastern edge, was fortified in 1694 against a feared French invasion from Santo Domingo. Downtown, the Institute of Jamaica dates from 1879, Liberty Hall was the base of the Kingston division of Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association, and Trench Town Culture Yard is one of the Central Housing Authority houses built between 1940 and 1949. We could not find opening hours or admission fees for any of them on a stable official page, so call ahead.
An August afternoon at Fort Charles averages 87.8°F against 86.5°F in September, so the ramparts get a little easier as the month turns while the rain grows more frequent. Keep the roofed sites for the wet hours: Holy Trinity Cathedral, built in 1911 in the Byzantine-revival style, and Kingston Parish Church, erected around 1911 on the foundations of the original church.
Downtown’s architecture costs nothing to look at from the sidewalk: the Ward Theatre, a 1912 gift to the city from Colonel Charles Ward, on St. William Grant Park, the two-story Jamaica Georgian house at 150 East Street, one of the few of its design left in the city, and Kingston Railway Station, built on a grand scale along the same lines. We could not verify whether National Heroes Park charges entry.
Kingston in September: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Set off for Port Royal around 7 a.m., about an hour after the 5:54 a.m. sunrise, by taxi or rental car (our driving in Jamaica guide covers the car option). Walk Fort Charles and see St. Peter’s Church, whose original building the 1692 earthquake destroyed, then stop at Rockfort on the drive back. Spend the midday heat inside the Institute of Jamaica, and reach St. William Grant Park around 5 p.m. for the Ward Theatre’s front before the 6:10 p.m. sunset.
Day two. Start in National Heroes Park at 7 a.m., before the heat builds, and walk the monuments to Marcus Garvey (1964), Donald Sangster (1968), Alexander Bustamante (completed October 1979) and Nanny of the Maroons (1999), with George William Gordon, Paul Bogle and Samuel Sharpe alongside. Late morning, see Liberty Hall and the 1907 Earthquake Monument, then Trench Town Culture Yard after lunch. If rain sets in, swap the park for Holy Trinity Cathedral and move Trench Town to the next dry hour.
Kingston in September vs August and October
| Kingston | August | September | October |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high (ERA5, 1991-2020) | 87.8°F | 86.5°F | 84.6°F |
| Average low (ERA5, 1991-2020) | 76.5°F | 75.9°F | 75.0°F |
| Precipitation (ERA5, 1991-2020) | 3.66 in | 5.28 in | 5.70 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 9.2 | 12.9 | 15.1 |
| Sea surface, daily max (Marine API, 2015-2024) | 86.6°F | 87.6°F | 87.7°F |
Against August, September runs 1.3°F cooler in the afternoon (86.5°F against 87.8°F) and 0.6°F cooler at night, but wetter: 5.28 inches against 3.66, and 12.9 wet days against 9.2. October cools the high by another 1.9°F to 84.6°F and brings the most rain of the three, 5.70 inches over 15.1 days. The sea barely moves on Open-Meteo’s 2015-2024 marine series, from 86.6°F in August to 87.6°F in September and 87.7°F in October.
Moving four weeks earlier to August gains 3.7 fewer wet days and loses 1.3°F of afternoon comfort, with a sea 1.0°F cooler. Moving four weeks later to October gains the mildest afternoons of the three and costs 2.2 more wet days. Night lows stay within 1.5°F across all three months, so the same clothes work whichever you pick. Our Kingston in August and Kingston in October pages carry the detail.
Is September a good time to visit Kingston?
Yes, for travelers coming for Kingston’s forts, churches and monuments who can live with 75.9°F nights and rain on about three days in seven. No for anyone whose trip hinges on dry beach days, or who cannot book a changeable rate during hurricane season.
If the answer is no, August is the better neighbor: 3.66 inches of rain against October’s 5.70, and 9.2 wet days against 15.1, at the price of an 87.8°F average high. For months beyond that window, the best time to visit Jamaica sets out the whole year.
Only a September visit puts you in National Heroes Park on the anniversary of Norman Manley’s monument, dedicated there on September 16, 1972.
The last word
Settle the room rate before the route: a cancellable booking first, then two early starts. On the second morning, leave half an hour downtown for Wesley Methodist Church, erected in 1825 and older than Kingston Railway Station and the Georgian house at 150 East Street. And if the island calls after Kingston, our 7-day Jamaica itinerary picks up the thread.
